Word Wall Vocabulary:

• Fourteen Points: Woodrow Wilson (USA)’s plan to end World War I
• Georges Clemenceau: leader of France, wanted to punish Germany harshly for the war
• League of Nations: originally part of the Fourteen Points, a group of countries meeting together to prevent war from happening again
• Mandates: colonies taken from their original mother country and given to Britain and France after World War I
• Reparations: payments for war damages
• Treaty of Versailles: one of many treaties than ended World War I
• War Guilt Clause: blamed Germany for causing World War I
• Woodrow Wilson: leader of the US, wanted peace in Europe, wrote the Fourteen Points
Turn and Talk
Remember, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia (thus drawing Russia into the war on Serbia’s side, and Germany into the war on Austria-Hungary’s side), but Germany invaded Belgium, forcing Britain to declare war. Do you think it’s a good idea to punish Germany completely for the war?
ANS: Answers vary
What are Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points?
• When the USA joined the war, Woodrow Wilson outlined America’s war aims (goals) in the Fourteen Points
• Each nationality had their own state
• Freedom of the seas
• End to secret diplomacy
• Creation of the League of Nations
• The ultimate goal of the Fourteen Points was to create lasting peace after World War I
Turn and Talk
Why might Wilson mention an end to secret alliances in his Fourteen Points?
ANS: Because secret alliances had helped to cause the war in the first place
What is the Treaty of Versailles?
• The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I
• In the treaty, Germany lost territory to France, and Poland was created out of land that formerly belonged to Germany
• Austria-Hungary was divided into several new countries, and Turkey lost land
• Germany lost its navy and its army was reduced to a very small size
• The War Guilt Clause forced Germany to take responsibility for the war
• League of Nations was created
• The ultimate goal of the Treaty of Versailles was to punish Germany
Turn and Talk
How might the War Guilt Clause lead to trouble later on?
ANS: Germany technically started the war by invading Belgium, but they didn’t cause the issues in Austria-Hungary, and they were angry that they were blamed for them
