How did it start?

•In 1917, Congress passed the “Smith Hughes” Act creating agriculture classes

•actual name of the legislation was the National Vocational Education Act

The Founding of FFA

•Henry Groseclose is known as the “Father of FFA” for beginning the Future Farmers of Virginia Club which inspired other states to start clubs

• In 1928, the Future Farmers of America was founded in Kansas City, Missouri

•Dues were 10 cents

Other Important Information

• The FFA Creed was written by E.M. Tiffany and adopted in 1930

• Girls were allowed membership in 1969

• Students voted in 1988 to change the name to The National FFA Organization

• The Discovery Degree first available for middle school members in 2001

• The National FFA Convention is now held in Indianapolis, Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky

Create Your Own Emblem• For this activity, you will create your own personal emblem on the back of

this paper. You may want to make a rough draft or sketch on your own paper first.

Directions:

1. It must have at least five (5) symbols included within the emblem. All five parts should be included into one shape (which can be one of the five or an extra).

2. Symbols must be appropriate for school (no alcohol, tobacco, guns, etc.)

3. Color your emblem and make it neat.

4. Provide a one or two sentence description for each symbol of why you chose it. (“I love it” or “It’s my favorite” are not acceptable explanations. You must explain why you love it or it’s your favorite.)

5. You can earn up to 10 bonus points for extra symbols and descriptions (one point per symbol and description).

nationally recognized symbol of the FFA
