After World War I ended in 1919, the U.S. economy suffered a serious downturn. The national income dropped severely from $79 billion in 1920 to $63 billion in 1922, and average annual personal incomes from $835 to $672. The recession was due in part to the end of wartime production, which had created millions of jobs and expanded factories throughout the United States.
