From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe we are at the end of another school year. Thank you

to all our families for their support and partnership over the course of the

year – your efforts are very much appreciated. I would also like to

acknowledge and thank our staff for their commitment, professionalism

and above all enthusiasm in teaching our students – I feel very fortunate

to work with such a dedicated group of people. Lastly a big thank you

to our wonderful students – you make our school the great school that it

is! Congratulations to all on a very successful 2017.

Christmas Market

Congratulations to our school and wider community on our fabulous

Christmas Market held on Friday 8th December. The market was a huge

success and we were fortunate to have some perfect weather –

especially given the stormy shenanigans of the evening before! The

community spirit was high and there was definitely a buzz in the air!

An event like this does not ‘just occur’ – it requires an enormous

commitment of time and energy from the people who plan, coordinate

and negotiate with stall holders in the lead up to the evening. A very

sincere thank you must go to Bec Bennet and Emily Boyle – for their work

and commitment to making this event the huge success it was. Thank you also to the many hard

working parents who supported the event by assisting with preparations leading up to, and on, the

day as well as those who stayed back and helped clear up after the event. A special thank you to

Sarah McQuarrie from STOMP DC who ran the disco for the students and to our dedicated teaching

staff who were also there to lend a hand. A special mention must go to Annette Bruce who was able

to assist Bec and Emily with all their enquiries and offer them support along the way. Finally thank you

to all the stall holders, food traders, Signorelli’s (for the trees) , Nunzio Sulfaro from Nelson Alexander

(for the auctioneering of the trees), the man in in the Big Red Suit for making an effort to surprise our

students – and the countless others who contributed to making the night successful.

Many people have commented about the positive community energy on the evening, which only

comes about through the active participation and support that we saw on the night. What a

wonderful effort from our Belle Vue Primary School community. Congratulations one and all! (see

photo’s pages 5 - 8)

Grade 6 Graduation

On Tuesday 12th December our grade 6 students had their graduation at the Manningham Hotel. It

was a ‘formal’ evening with everyone dressed in their finest – there were speeches, slide show

presentations and a dance to celebrate! Each student presented their thoughts/reflections on their 7

years at Belle Vue in a confident and articulate manner. Congratulations and best wishes to each of

you as you move on to secondary school.

A special mention needs to be made of Lisa Perry for her assistance in ensuring this night was a

success. You managed to ease the workload for our 5/6 teachers – and for that we are eternally

grateful. Also to Emma Pringle who took it upon herself to coordinate a Years 6 Graduation Book. It

looks amazing and is something each grade 6 student can cherish for ever. Thankyou.

Christmas Assembly and Student Leader Presentation

The last week has seen each class, as well Junior and Senior Choir, frantically preparing for the

Christmas Assembly which was held yesterday.

This is such a lovely way to end our school year – with each child having the opportunity to stand up

and perform in front of the wider community. Well done to all of you – you were magnificent!

PRIDE RESPONSIBILITY RESPECT INTEGRITY COMMITMENT 2

A special mention needs to go out to the Dance Club members including James P (so cute) and of

course our ADORABLE little preppies! (see photos page 9)

At this assembly we also acknowledged our outgoing school leaders on a fantastic 2017 and

announced our new school leaders for 2018.

Well done to all the year 5 students who put themselves up for leadership positions – you should all be

very proud of how well you presented.

Congratulations to the following students on securing a leadership position for 2018.

School Captain – Sam

School Captain – Dinushi

JSC President – Melissa

JSC Treasurer – Oli

Music Captain – Paris

Choir Captain – Lauren

Monash House Captains – Ishaan and Jacinta

Chisolm House Captains – Jonathan and Emma

Macarthur House Captains – Lachlan and Ari

We would also like to congratulate our current (2017) school leaders on the magnificent job they have

done this year. A particularly special mention needs to be made of Zac and Kyra for being fabulous

school captains – they are certainly leaders that can be looked up to. Well

done!

Kooyong Student Prize 2017

On Monday evening two of our school leaders, James P and Chloe were

presented with certificates for the Kooyong Student Prize for 2017. James

and Chloe were nominated by their teachers as having ‘excellence in

academic and extracurricular pursuits, leadership amongst peers and a

strong commitment to upholding the school’s values and strengthening the

community at large’. James, Chloe and their families attended a

ceremony at Camberwell High School and were presented the certificates

and medallions by Josh Frydenberg (MP – Federal member for Kooyong).

Congratulations to James and Chloe – the nomination was well deserved

and as a school community we are very proud of you!

The staff at Belle Vue Primary School would like to wish everyone a

very Merry Christmas and a safe, relaxing and happy New Year! Enjoy

the break, be kind to each other and we will see you on Wednesday

31st of January 2018.

A message from NELA (Update): In November, the Victorian Government announced the route for North East Link, which will connect an upgraded Eastern Freeway to the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough, via a tunnel from Bulleen Road to Lower Plenty Road. We have heard concerns from the school community on how the project would affect you. The North East Link Authority wants to work with you to address any of these concerns. For Belle Vue Primary, there will be no direct impacts, however as the project is nearby there are great opportunities for us to work together. We heard during consultation that there is a need for improved connections for people walking and cycling to school from Bulleen across the Eastern Freeway. We have incorporated this feedback into the project planning and will be including walking and cycling paths as part of the design, along with new improved noise walls. While North East Link needs to go through a planning process throughout 2018 and 2019 before it is approved, there are plenty of opportunities for students, staff and parents to get involved and have their say. Next year, we will be working together to form community forums to specifically work with schools, child care centres and kinders close to the project to make sure you are receiving information that you need and providing input into the project. If you’re interested in being involved in shaping this project, the authority wants to hear from you. If you would like to get involved, please call 1800 941 191 or email [email protected]

Qualifying for 2018 District

Swimming Carnival Continuing the new format we implemented this year there will be no

Belle Vue swimming carnival in 2018 to determine which students

have qualified for our district swimming team.

Instead, qualification for the team will be determined by a student’s

fastest 50m lap time in a selected event, as witnessed and verified by either a guardian or swim club instructor.

This is now common practice for many schools in our district, providing an effective way to streamline the selection

process. After the returned forms have been collected the two fastest times in each age category for each event will qualify

for a place in the Belle Vue swimming team which will then go on to compete at the District swimming level.

District swimming will be held at Boroondara Sports Complex on Monday 26th February, 2018 (week 5 of Term 1). The

below slips must be completed and returned to classroom teachers by Friday 9th February if students wish to be considered.

With the summer holidays ahead this gives students plenty of time to get some training sessions in at the local pool and

record their personal best times.

Eligible age categories for selection are: 9/10yrs 11yrs 12/13yrs

(A student’s age category is determined by their age as at 31st December 2017)

50m events for selection are: 50m Freestyle 50m backstroke 50m Breaststroke 50m Butterfly

The fastest qualifiers for each event/age will also be offered a place on the respective relay team.

While students may enter their personal best time for all 4 events, only the fastest

two times in each event/age group will qualify for District.

Market Night

Congratulations to Bec and Emily (and their helper elves!) on a very successful

Christmas Market. Thank you to everyone involved - too many to mention - but your

efforts helped ensure the night was the great success it was.

Our school had such a positive, happy, vibe going on, with our own families as well as

neighbours and the wider community coming along - great community spirit!

A lovely way to lead into the end of the year.
