Health Professional Education

Dietetic Internship Preceptor

Bellin Health’s commitment to education parallels our commitment to the advancement of health services. this is evidenced by continuing medical education offerings, a cardiovascular staff series, support of physician and medical students, student mentoring, continued education for our health system administration, support of Bellin College, and cooperative efforts with other educational institutions.

Bellin Health is pleased to be able to work with the university of Wisconsin-green Bay and its Registered Dieticians program, providing preceptors for the Dietetic Internship Preceptor program.

the preceptors work with the interns from the university to provide information, assist with planning, act as role models, facilitate learning, and assess the interns’ progress.

the Food & nutrition Services Department, Diabetes Services Department, and Bellin’s inpatient registered dietician are all active in the program, providing a well-rounded experience and exposure to the nutrition-related areas of health care, including food service, medical nutrition therapy, and managing diabetes.

two to four students complete a full rotation each year. the rotations vary in length from four weeks to 12 weeks, providing valuable hands-on experience for the interns.

the Dietetic Internship Preceptor program is another key component in Bellin’s commitment to education, helping to shape the minds of the registered dieticians of the future.

Subsidized Health Services

Oconto Hospital Expansion

Bellin Health’s contributions to the community include providing health care at a free or reduced charge to those in the community who are unable to pay, are medically underserved, or uninsured. this includes joint ventures and innovative programs that support health care in areas that would otherwise be underserved.

When the local hospital in Oconto, Wis., closed, residents were left without access to the care they needed locally. In 2005, Bellin Health partnered with Oconto Hospital Citizens’ Foundation to establish a critical care access hospital in the city. In 2012, the health system completed an expansion that will meet the needs of the community well into the future.

the expansion of Oconto Hospital enables the facility to serve more than twice as many patients each year. the $15 million expansion project saw the facility grow from 11,000 sq. ft. to more than 44,000 sq. ft.

the new facility now offers additional services at the local level including:• Rotating specialists• Outpatient surgery• gastrointestinal services• Cardiac echograms and stress testing• Infusion care

the project also provided expanded laboratory capabilities, an upgraded Ct scanner, state-of-the-art surgical rooms, expansion of IV infusion care to include chemotherapy, and additional outpatient capabilities for the behavioral health program.

Included in the project was space for a now fully-functioning dental clinic to serve those who would not otherwise have access to local dental care.

Enriching Our Community

more than a century ago, a local physician named Dr. Julius J. Bellin set forth on a path – serving as a beacon to those who followed in his footsteps. Recognizing the community’s need for quality health care, Dr. Bellin devoted his own life to improving the quality of life of others.

today, Bellin Health remains a community-owned, not-for-profit organization dedicated to carrying forth his legacy through our organizational vision that the people in our region will be the healthiest in the nation.

Our community focus and bond is cemented in our structure. Bellin Health is governed by a local board of directors, comprised of business and community leaders. the board makes decisions based on the well-being of the individuals and families in the communities we serve. that covers more than 600,000 people living in northeast Wisconsin and the upper Peninsula of michigan.

under the direction of our board, we are designing innovative outreach programs that will improve the health and quality of life in this region, while maintaining our commitment to providing compassionate, safe, reliable, and cost-effective patient care. Bellin Health also seeks out opportunities to positively impact lives through activities that promote health and wellness.

In this Community Benefits Report, you will find a sampling of Bellin’s contributions and examples of how those offerings have improved the health and quality of life for your family, your neighbors, and the communities within our region.

We are proud to continue Bellin Health’s path of community enrichment.

Community Health Services

Baby U

to engage individuals in our communities, Bellin Health provides a number of services including health information, screenings, translation services, a 24/7 community health line, and more. Bellin Health is a strong supporter of community initiatives and is a founding partner of unity Hospice.

It’s been said many times … “Babies don’t come with instruction manuals.” the months leading up to the arrival of a first child can include a spectrum of emotions, an endless list of tasks, and countless questions for parents as they prepare for the birth. It can be overwhelming as the due date approaches – leaving many soon-to-be parents wondering if they are ready for parenthood.

that’s why Babyu was developed.

the Babyu program is specifically designed to help expectant parents become better informed as to what to expect as parents-in-waiting and through the initial stages of parenthood.

this past year’s Babyu featured sessions on prenatal and postnatal care, getting ready to be a dad, car seat safety, and much more. the events also included a new parent question and answer session with doctors specializing in baby care. A tour of Bellin Hospital’s Kress Birthing Center was part of Babyu, along with educational displays, baby product vendors, and even some baby-themed prizes.

Financial and In-kind Contributions

Digestive Health Display

Bellin Health’s community support is far-reaching and takes many forms. Employees follow that lead with contributions to countless charities throughout the region. Bellin’s contributions include emergency funds for patients, support of the n.E.W. Community Clinic, sponsorships and medical coverage for community events, free and subsidized fitness center memberships, and more.

Bellin Health is the proud sponsor of a unique display at the Children’s museum of green Bay – a display that allows kids to get an inside look at how their digestive system works.

Children visiting the downtown green Bay museum can crawl through a large replica of the human digestive system – from the mouth and tongue to the digestive system’s end – to learn how it works and better understand why eating healthy is important.

the interactive display has purpose. Childhood obesity is reaching epidemic proportions. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 17 percent of u.S. children were obese in 2009-2010.

the digestive system display is part of the Children’s museum’s increased efforts to “provide families with exhibits, programming, and educational experiences that will change their lives by giving them information and skills that will allow them to become healthy, educated individuals.”

Community Building Activities

Free Training Runs

As the only community-based health care system in green Bay, Bellin Health has a rich tradition of promoting a sense of community, spanning more than 100 years. that tradition continues today through numerous events and activities including athletic training services for local school sports programs and hosting the Bellin Run, one of the largest 10K runs in the u.S.

Each year, the Bellin Run draws thousands of runners and walkers to the streets of green Bay and Allouez. the run itself is the culmination of weeks and months of preparation for many of the participants.

Organizers hope the run also serves as a means of incorporating healthy habits into participant lifestyles. to help create a regular regiment of exercise, the Bellin Run provides participants with training resources including training guides, a website with videos of warm-up exercises and stretches, and free weekly training runs.

the free training runs took place on Wednesday evenings starting in march and drew 50 to 100 runners or walkers each session. the sessions were designed for people of all abilities, with short routes for beginners and long routes for those more advanced.

Staffed by running and fitness experts from Bellin Health, the training classes provided valuable information on fluid intake, proper running technique, common injuries, shoe fittings, and other topics.

A free training class was also offered to those interested in cross-training as a way to prepare for the Bellin Run. the weekly sessions included advice and information on proper dynamic warm-up, flexibility training, core strengthening, plyometric training, and strength training.
