Bell Kit or Percussion Kits: This form of beginner kit is what is traditionally sold in music stores and is suitable for beginning studies. Some bell kits are also referred to as percussion kit and may also include a snare drum. The snare drum is not a requirement. A good practice pad is required. This kit does NOT need to come back and forth to school. This kit can stay at home. Hopefully … All that needs to be brought back and forth to school is a stick bag with the appropriate mallets. IDEALLY, A practice xylophone would be better for a percussion student. I highly recommend going this route. “Korogi” makes a great desktop xylophone for $315 from www.percussionsource.com that allows even students studying percussion at the high school level to practice mallet technique at home. Typically, the bell kits (as shown above) are only used the first year of study to help with note identification. Practice xylophone help students develop rolls, note reading and proper technique.
