Bell Kit or Percussion Kits:
This form of beginner kit is what is traditionally sold in music stores and is suitable for beginning studies. Some bell kits are also referred to as percussion kit and may also include a snare drum. The snare drum is not a requirement. A good practice pad is required. This kit does NOT need to come back and forth to school. This kit can stay at home. Hopefully … All that needs to be brought back and forth to school is a stick bag with the appropriate mallets. IDEALLY, A practice xylophone would be better for a percussion student. I highly recommend going this route. “Korogi” makes a great desktop xylophone for $315 from www.percussionsource.com that allows even students studying percussion at the high school level to practice mallet technique at home. Typically, the bell kits (as shown above) are only used the first year of study to help with note identification. Practice xylophone help students develop rolls, note reading and proper technique.

Stick Bag & Practice Pad:
These mallets are sometimes sold in “educational” packs. Included mallets are: General Snare drum sticks Medium Marimba mallets General Timpani sticks Hard rubber or Plastic Xylophone mallets Having this stick bag at school and these proper mallets will allow students to use the school owned percussion instruments. Also, having a high quality practice pad will be essential for developing snare drum technique and general stick control. “HQ” makes great practice pads and are recommended over “Remo”. However, if you rented /purchased a kit and it came with a remo practice pad, no worries. That will work. AGAIN … Hopefully … All that needs to be brought back and forth to school is a stick bag with the appropriate mallets. I hope this answer any questions you may have about percussion and what is needed/recommended as your child begins their study in the art of hitting things! (A.K.A. percussion) Please do feel free to send me an email or call if you would like to talk further and more in depth about specifics. Thank you for your support. Best, Mr. Roche
