CHAPTER 4 BELLRINGER
13. What do we call culturally (society’s) preferred timing of social events
such as marriage?
14. As women get older, what is the name for the biological changes she will experience as her ability to reproduce declines? (hint: the end of menstruation)
15.Which one of your senses experiences a decline the earliest?
16. Which type of intelligence declines with old age – fluid or crystallized?
Social Clock
• The culturally (society’s) preferred
timing of social events such as
marriage, parenthood, and retirement
• The “best” timing for certain life
events
• The timing varies from culture to
culture.
• Examples:
4 stages of AdulthoodEmerging Adulthood 20’s (post college)
Early Adulthood 20’s to mid 30’s
Middle Adulthood mid 30’s to mid 60’s
Late Adulthood 65 and over
4th Stage: Emerging Adulthood
• Researchers are looking at new stage in
adulthood: Emerging Adulthood
• It is a developmental period between
adolescence and adulthood
• For those who are not quite adolescents
anymore, but not yet adults either
Menopause
• The time of natural end of menstruation
• Referred to as the biological changes a
woman experiences as her ability to
reproduce declines
• Usually occurs between age 45 & 55
• Does not usually lead to depression
And for men A Midlife Crisis?
• Research does not support the idea of a
midlife crisis in men
Aging and Our Senses
Our vision, hearing and sense of smell all decline in old age.
• Vision & our sense of smell decline rapidly after age 70
• Our sense of hearing shows a slower decline that starts around age 30
Diseases Related to Aging:
Alzheimer’s Disease
• A progressive and irreversible brain
disorder
• Symptoms include: gradual deterioration
of memory
• Decrease in speed of reasoning & language
• Problems with physical functioning
Diseases Related to Aging: Senile
Dementia
• The mental disintegration that
accompanies alcoholism, tumor,
stroke, aging, or Alzheimer's disease
Cognitive Changes and Transitions:
Intelligence:
Fluid VS. Crystallized Insurance
• Fluid Intelligence is one’s ability to
reason speedily and abstractly
• Can be used to solve novel logic
problems
• Declines as people get older
Cognitive Changes and Transitions:
Intelligence:
Crystallized Intelligence
• One’s accumulated knowledge and
verbal skills
• Tends to increase with age
Erik Erikson
• Constructed an 8-stage theory of
social development
• Each stage has its own psychosocial
developmental task.
• The last 4 stages deal with
Adolescence through late adulthood.
The 4 Commitments of Adulthood:
Commitment to Work
• Most high school/college students
aren’t sure of their career goals.
• Happiness seems to be correlated
with work that is challenging,
provides a sense of accomplishment,
and is interesting.
Commitment to Love
• An important factor in
adult happiness
• Lasting love includes:
– Intimate self-disclosure
– Shared emotional and material
support
– Similar interests and values
Commitment to Marriage
• 90% of the population gets married
(that stat is decreasing)
• 50% divorce rate (the divorce rate is
currently decreasing)
• 75% of those who have divorced
remarry
Commitment to Children
• Children result in a change in the
marital relationship
• Parents can sometimes disagree who
takes care of the children as they
grow- who does what?
Empty Nest
• The change married couples go
through as a result of their children
leaving home
• Not necessarily a negative event for
couples
Overall Life Satisfaction
• Most studies show the elderly as
happy and satisfied with life.
• People tend to mellow with age.
• Most regrets focus on what the
person didn’t do rather than mistakes
they have made in life.
