“Hardships prepare ordinary people for an

extraordinary destiny.” C.S. Lewis’ quote covers

my high school career in one sentence. Throughout

the past four years, there have been many bumps in

the road; however, I persevered, striving to always

do my best and be my best. By maintaining a posi-

tive attitude and with the help of family and many

friends, I can now say I have accomplished a goal I

have had since I was 6 years old, despite the tough

times I have endured.

Beginning in the fall of 2016, I will be

attending the University of Texas at Austin to major

in Accounting through the five-year integrated

Master’s program. This program will ensure that I

am pushed to my limit with a heavy course load in

order to maximize my successes while being chal-

lenged to achieve my dream. Following the comple-

tion of my degree, I would like to work in the busi-

ness world for several years, then earn a teaching

certificate to teach business classes at the high

school level. I aspire to be a teacher later on in life

because my lifetime goal is to make a difference in

the world. Whether it be in the business world or

for high school students, I will positively impact the

world we live in, influencing the future of our na-

Another Successful Track Season at BHS

For the second year in a row, the Bells Lady Panthers Soft-

ball team continued a playoff run deep into post-season. The

team finished with an 8-4 record and 3rd Place in District play.

The Lady Panthers defeated Wolfe City at Bi-district, Frost at

Area, and Axtel in the Regional Quarter Finals. These were all

great games with exciting moments and outstanding plays by the

Lady Panthers. Unfortunately, their season came to a close

when they faced the Crawford Lady Pirates at Regional Semi-

finals. The Lady Panthers are coached by Kristina Stephens and

Lisa Johnson. Bells ISD and the community of Bells enjoyed

supporting the players this year and congratulate the coaches and

Lady Panthers for a job well done! You have worn maroon and

gold with pride and represented Bells High School well this sea-

son. Photo at right courtesy of Janna Melvin

BHS Knock It Out of the Park Competition

By Yalonda Ivers

During the three week leading up to the STAAR English I & II

End of Course Exams, BHS had a friendly competition be-

tween freshmen and sophomore classes. Each day, students

were given the opportunity to answer a question similar to

what is found on the state assessments. The questions were

graded each evening and team points were generated based

upon the percentage of each class that participated and the

percentage of correct answers. The three students with the top

individual scores were considered MVPs.

Throughout the competition, five Grand Slam questions were

available to students. These questions allowed students to

practice their writing skills by writing essays and answering

short answer response questions. Just as on STAAR EOCs,

these essay points were multiplied by 3 and scored on a scale

of 1-3. Individual

students could earn up

to 9 points per grand

slam entry.

The winning team

competed for the right

to miss classes on the

afternoon of May 25th

and enjoy a “Take Me

Out to the Ballgame” Party while watching the Rangers take

on the Angels projected on the big screen. Students enjoyed

“peanuts and Cracker Jacks”, along with popcorn, soda, and

hot dogs during the game. To participate in the party, students

must have completed a minimum of five daily questions.

Our MVPs, students with the highest individual scores trav-

eled with Mr. Weger to the Ballpark in Arlington on May 11th

to enjoy the Rangers take on the Chicago White Sox. Our

three MVP winners were: Emma Bass with 36 points, Saman-

tha Stanley with 32 points, and Sarah Smart with 29 points.

The three MVP’s and Mr. Weger enjoyed seats on the first

base line in section 36 on row 19! A huge thank you to Presco

Products in Sherman, Texas for providing the four tickets and

parking pass valued at over $255!

Social Media Impacts Student’s Oppor-

tunities in College! What you put out on social media really does matter!

Recently, several college coaches tweeted about pro-

spective athletes that they passed up due to what they

saw on the students’ social media pages.

Students are losing scholarships, opportunities to play

and even jobs due to poor decisions in what they

post, share or Tweet! Think about the “brand” you

are putting out when you share via social media!

but a shout out goes to Zack Sprayberry who was select-

ed to the all star cast and Dawson Shaw who was select-

ed honorable mention all star cast. The cast performed

"The Last Round-Up of the Guacamole Queens" at

North McKinney High. The students did indeed repre-

sent Bells High School and themselves well, growing

and stretching themselves to become believable charac-

ters as well as a strong ensemble. Mr. Bill Wheeler di-

rected the one-act play this year.

Students Earn $500 for BHS The Taco Bell Foundation very much supports students

graduating from high school! Their “Graduate for

Mas”-or Graduate for more- program, challenges stu-

dents to take an online pledge to finish high school.

Once students take the pledge they have an account set

up on the website which allows them to earn prizes for

taking part in various educational activities designed to

help students with post-secondary plans. There is a na-

tionwide competition along with this program with

grand prizes such as having a celebrity principal for a

day or a dance hosted by a celebrity DJ. To promote the

program, they provide schools with a countdown to

graduation clock. Our clock is displayed on the stage in

the BHS Commons.

The Taco Bell Foundation awards a $500 grant to

schools which have at least 30% of their student body

take the pledge. BHS students gladly did so and Bells

High School will soon receive a check for $500! That

money will be used to encourage students in their aca-

demic pursuits. Students who took the pledge also

earned free coupons for tacos from Taco Bell.

Round Two of “Who Can Knock It Out of

the Park” As BHS students geared up for EOC’s in algebra, biolo-

gy, and U.S. History, a second round of Knock It Out of

the Park was held. Tuesday-Thursday of each week, stu-

dents had the opportunity to earn Dum Dum Suckers or

Laffy Taffy for answering a question in their subject

correctly. Students were able to answer more than one

question a day; however, they could only win one piece

of candy. Tuesdays featured algebra questions, Wednes-

days biology questions, and Thursdays U.S. History

questions. Each day, three winners were chosen at the

end of lunch to receive a full sized candy bar. On Mon-

day, May2nd, one winner was drawn from a bucket of

all the correct answers turned in to receive a $100 Visa

Gift card!

All of these efforts help reinforce course content and

motivate students as they prepare for their EOC exams!

their accomplishments and reward, TTM donated $50

per classroom ($150) for Pizza Hut Pizza! The celebrat-

program this year. Their 2nd classroom goal was to do-

nate to their favorite charity, and they spent time at the

end of the year working on that goal! We are very proud

of their efforts! Congratulations to the students and

their teacher, Mrs. Vicki Russell.

On Monday, April 25th, our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders

celebrated Earth Day in collaboration with the Bells Elementary

PTO and Kohl’s. Each classroom planted flowers for the beautifica-

tion of our water gardens. This Earth Day activity tied in with sci-

ence lessons of natural re-

sources, living or non-living

things working together, and

learning the parts of a plant.

We would like to thank the

Bells Elementary PTO and

Kohl’s volunteers for work-

ing with our students!

Bells Elementary Sports Attendance Adventure

Congratulations to Mrs. Ciaccio’s and Ms. Offill’s classes. They won the April attend-

ance contest. 100% of the two classes were present during the BES contest. The reward

was that Coach Ciaccio, Coach Offill, and the “#1 sports fans” got to dress up and show off

Bells High School Student Selected to Visit NASA This Summer as a High School

Aerospace Scholar

Kinley Ives has been selected to travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC)

this summer to participate in the High School Aerospace Scholars program (HAS).

Nominated by their state legislator, Ives, has been selected as one of more than 260

high school juniors from across Texas to be part of HAS. During the school year,

selected students completed a 16-week interactive, on-line curriculum including four

distance-learning modules each containing four web-based assignments. The on-site

experience at NASA will include a tour of JSC facilities and briefings by NASA

subject matter experts, then these scholars will apply their newfound knowledge

working as a team to plan and design a mission to Mars. Their on-site experience will conclude with a presentation of their proposal to

attending parents, members of the Texas Legislature, Houston Livestock Show and

Rodeo, Rotary NASA, and JSC senior management. The state of Texas, in partnership with JSC and the Texas educational communi-

ty, developed HAS in 1999 to encourage more students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engi-

neering and mathematics (STEM). More than 8,700 students from across Texas have participated in the program

since its inception 17 years ago. With this program, NASA continues the Agency’s tradition of investing in the nation’s educational programs.

It is directly tied to the Agency's major education goal of attracting and retaining students in STEM disciplines

critical to NASA’s future missions, which include missions to Mars and beyond.
