MagnetismMagnetism

MagnetismMagnetism: A force of attraction : A force of attraction or repulsion between various or repulsion between various substances, ultimately it is due to substances, ultimately it is due to the motion of electric charges. the motion of electric charges.

Purpose:

• To explore the properties of magnetism.

Page 6: Bellwork (3/26/14) The structure of the Earth consists of what four parts? Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core

Pre Lab: (Write the questions and answer them.)

1. What is the difference between an electrical insulator and conductor?

2. Of the materials, list the materials from best to worst magnetic insulators? (paper, foil, cotton cloth, wool felt, and plastic bags)

3. Why do you think these materials will be better magnetic insulators?

Materials:• 2 bar magnets • 1 horseshoe magnet• 1 compass• 10 paper clips • printer paper• aluminum foil• cotton cloth• wool felt • plastic bag

Part 1: Observations

• Make six detailed observations using the materials provided.

Page 9: Bellwork (3/26/14) The structure of the Earth consists of what four parts? Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core

Part 2: Magnetic Insulators

1. Put one layer of the material between a bar magnet and the paper clips, record how many it holds.

2. Place the magnet with the material near the compass (5 cm), record if the compass moves.

3. Repeat step #1 and #2 but put two, four and eight layers for each of the 5 materials.

Part 3: Magnetic Fields

• Draw an arrow in the direction of which way the red needle points for each of the diagrams that are on the lab tables.

Data Collection

• Part 2 and Part 3 Examples

• Layers 1, 2, 4 and 8 (wool and cotton)

Cautions and Reminders:

• Compasses should not be closer then 5 cm (~2 in.) from the magnets.

• Please keep the magnets separated and the compass away from the magnets when done and leave the area the way that you found it, thank you.

• There are follow-up questions after part 3.

Page 19: Bellwork (3/26/14) The structure of the Earth consists of what four parts? Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core

Questions: (in complete sentences)1. What happen when two similar poles are near

each other and when two different poles are near each other?

2. Are some materials better magnetic insulators? Which materials are better insulator which materials are not good insulators?

3. Was your prediction correct from pre-lab question #2? What were the similarities and differences?

4. What factors do you think contributed to the magnetic insulators?

5. What observations did you notice about which way the red part of the compass needle points. What pole is the red part of the needle?
