Columbus Day: Historyand Controversy
In August 1492, three ships, ledby Italian-born ChristopherColumbus, set out to find a traderoute to Asia on behalf of theSpanish crown.
Most educated Europeans ofthe time knew the world wasround, but they had no idea howlarge it really was. WhenColumbus spied land after twomonths at sea, he thought he hadreached the East Indies, theislands off Southeast Asia. He wasactually half a world away in theBahamas. Columbus made threemore voyages to the New Worldbut never saw mainland NorthAmerica.
In 1937, President Franklin D.Roosevelt declared Oct. 12, thedate Columbus first landed, anational holiday. It was latermoved to the second Monday inOctober. Parades and festivalsnationwide honor Columbus and
his Italian heritage. The holiday and the man
behind it are not withoutcontroversy. Some people reasonthat Columbus didn’t reallydiscover anything, since the landshe found were already occupied.Others feel he should not beremembered as a hero, since thecolonization that followed hisjourneys led to slavery and diseasefor native inhabitants. Some areashold alternative celebrations tohonor these indigenouspopulations.
While we may disagree onColumbus’ legacy, we can agreethat, by bringing about Europe’sfirst contact with the Americas, hehelped set the stage for theeventual birth of our nation.

Focus on FallsMore than one in three people
age 65 years or older falls eachyear. The risk of falling and fall-related problems rises with age.
According to the NationalInstitute on Health, each yearmore than 1.6 million older U.S.adults visit the emergencydepartment for fall-relatedinjuries. Falls are the number onecause of fractures, hospitaladmissions for trauma, loss ofindependence and injury deaths. Most often, fall-related fracturesare in the person’s hip, pelvis, spine, arm, hand or ankle. Hipfractures are one of the mostserious types of fall injury. Theyare a leading cause of injury andloss of independence, amongolder adults. Most adults whocannot return to independentliving after such injuries hadphysical or mental disabilitiesbefore the fracture, thus resultingin the need for long-term care.
Risk FactorsRisk factors related to falls can
include, muscle weakness, poorbalance or difficulty walking, fluctuations in blood pressure, slower reflexes, foot problems, sensory problems, visualdisturbances, confusion – evenshort term, medications, and
taking four or more medicationsat one time, including over thecounter medications.
Fall Proofing Your HomeThe Director of Resident Care
Services at Belmont Village canprovide a home-safety assessmentof your apartment with the goal ofreducing your risk for falls.
Tips to “fall proof” your home:• Remove or reduce safety
hazards• Improve lighting; there are
many options available forpurchase, such as motionactivated night lightsthroughout your apartmentand in the bathroom
• Avoid and remove clutter oranything that can be atripping hazard, for exampleelectrical cords
• Arrange furniture so itprovides a clear path withplenty of room for you tomove around
• Review the carpet, removeany throw rugs and be sureto use only a non-skid rug inyour bathroom; remember toremove the rug when it is notin use
• Use a rubber bath mat in theshower
• Try to avoid wet floors• Avoid walking in the snow
and ice outside during winter• Install handrails and grab
bars as needed• Move frequently used items
so they are easily accessible
• Request a medicationreview from your physicianto be assured you are takingonly the medication that isnecessary for you.
Devices to Help Prevent FallsAppropriate use of assistive
devices can prevent harmfulfalls. Assistive devises mayinclude canes, walkers, wheelchairs and grabbers.Belmont Village can assist withdurable medical equipment thatcan be helpful in the preventionof falls. Some durable medicalequipment that is available canbe a hospital bed that can belowered manually so it is closeto the floor, floor mats toprevent injury when a fall occursfrom bed, pendants, emergencypull cords in the apartment andbathrooms, raised toilet seatsand bedside commodes. Thereare out-of-pocket costsassociated with most durablemedical equipment, and siderails are not a fall preventionsolution. The Director ofResident Care Services, yourPhysical and/or OccupationalTherapist, and your Physiciancan work together to develop afall prevention plan that iscustomized for each resident.
