Sadie’s CornerSome of you may have noticed
the neighborhood was closeddown for a few days last month. In fact, we were on quarantine forsix days. Ten of our neighborhoodresidents and two nurses whowork in the secured unit camedown with vomiting or flu-likesymptoms. As a rule, any timethere are two or more people withthe same symptoms, at the sametime, we quarantine that area. Thestaff did a spectacular job inkeeping the infection in one area, thanks to excellent infectioncontrol protocol. I’d like to takethis opportunity to say thank youto the staff and I’d like to saythank you to the other nurses whopicked up all those shifts for twonurses who had to be off. Andthank you to all of the very patientfamily members, to our very, veryspecial residents, and to ourdedicated staff members. Togetherwe wiped it out in six days.According to the department ofpublic health, that is nearlya record.
Thank you to our residents forgiving us all the feedback aboutour dining services in Josephine’sKitchen. As I mentioned inResident Council, we are nowinstituting a secret shopperprogram to judge our ownservices. We also have guest cards
for our guests who dine with us togive us feedback on how we mayimprove. Many of you have givenme direct feedback. For instance, some of you would like to see thebistro opened up for dinnerservice or a light meal. Others ofyou have requested that we openup the patio near the loadingdock, add tables and a spaceheater. These are all wonderfulideas and we are attacking themone at a time!
Many of you have been aroundBelmont Village long before westarted the veterans’ wall locatedoutside the Town Hall. Many ofyou are veterans and are not onthat wall and we would like tochange that! In late October 2015,our photographer, ThomasSanders, will be at Cardiff tophotograph each veteran. It is ourhonor to commemorate ourveterans at Belmont VillageCardiff by the Sea. Thank you allfor your service and commitmentto this wonderful country. Pleasehave a happy and safe Fourthof July!

Nurse’s NoteFall Prevention
Many people who fall, even ifthey are not injured, develop afear of falling. This fear may causethem to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobilityand loss of physical fitness, and inturn increases their actual risk offalling. Older adults can stayindependent and reduce theirchances of falling by doing thefollowing:
• Exercise regularly. It isimportant that the exercisesfocus on increasing legstrength and improvingbalance, and that they getmore challenging over time.Tai Chi programs areespecially good.
• Ask their doctor orpharmacist to review theirmedicines—bothprescription and over-the-counter—to identifymedicines that may causeside effects or interactionssuch as dizziness ordrowsiness.
• Have their eyes checked byan eye doctor at least once ayear and update theireyeglasses to maximize theirvision. Consider getting apair with single visiondistance lenses for someactivities such as walkingoutside.
• Make their homes safer byreducing tripping hazardssuch as rugs, adding grabbars inside and outside thetub or shower and next to thetoilet, and improving thelighting in their homes.

Neighborhood NewsSummer Kickoff
Last month we began ouroutdoor outings for the Circle ofFriends and Neighborhoodresidents. The groups were able togo and tour the Helen WoodwardAnimal Center. Helen WoodwardAnimal Center is changing theworld of animal welfare andbringing awareness to orphan petsaround the world. The group hadthe chance to experience a uniqueopportunity that supported thebond between humans andanimals. Animal therapy plays asignificant role in the older adultpopulation; studies show thatholding and caressing an animalprovides benefits such asrelaxation, lower blood pressure, improved long- and short-termmemory, and sensory stimuli.
We will continue to haveoutings that will create greatexperiences for our residents here!

The group spent a goodamount of time discussing howmuch they enjoyed traveling tothe park and having a picnic withtheir family and friends. Theydiscussed having all sorts of foods, like sandwiches, potato salad, fried chicken and deviled eggs.
During this time ofreminiscence, the group came upwith the great idea of hosting aCircle of Friends picnic for familymembers and close friends tocome and join. On Sunday,July 19, we will be going to a localpark and enjoy the summer sunwith one another for lunch! Weall hope that you can make it andhave a wonderful summerafternoon with your loved one.
