In fact, we were on quarantine for six days. Ten of our neighborhood residents and two nurses who work in the secured unit came down with vomiting or flu-like symptoms. As a rule, any time there are two or more people with the same symptoms, at the same time, we quarantine that area. The staff did a spectacular job in keeping the infection in one area, thanks to excellent infection control protocol. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the staff and I’d like to say thank you to the other nurses who picked up all those shifts for two nurses who had to be off. And thank you to all of the very patient family members, to our very, very special residents, and to our dedicated staff members. Together we wiped it out in six days. According to the department of public health, that is nearly a record. Thank you to our residents for giving us all the feedback about our dining services in Josephine’s Kitchen. As I mentioned in Resident Council, we are now instituting a secret shopper program to judge our own services. We also have guest cards for our guests who dine with us to give us feedback on how we may improve. Many of you have given me direct feedback. For instance, some of you would like to see the bistro opened up for dinner service or a light meal. Others of you have requested that we open up the patio near the loading dock, add tables and a space heater. These are all wonderful ideas and we are attacking them one at a time! Many of you have been around Belmont Village long before we started the veterans’ wall located outside the Town Hall. Many of you are veterans and are not on that wall and we would like to change that! In late October 2015, our photographer, Thomas Sanders, will be at Cardiff to photograph each veteran. It is our honor to commemorate our veterans at Belmont Village Cardiff by the Sea. Thank you all for your service and commitment to this wonderful country. Please have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Nurse’s NoteFall Prevention

Many people who fall, even ifthey are not injured, develop afear of falling. This fear may causethem to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobilityand loss of physical fitness, and inturn increases their actual risk offalling. Older adults can stayindependent and reduce theirchances of falling by doing thefollowing:

• Exercise regularly. It isimportant that the exercisesfocus on increasing legstrength and improvingbalance, and that they getmore challenging over time.Tai Chi programs areespecially good.

• Ask their doctor orpharmacist to review theirmedicines—bothprescription and over-the-counter—to identifymedicines that may causeside effects or interactionssuch as dizziness ordrowsiness.

• Have their eyes checked byan eye doctor at least once ayear and update theireyeglasses to maximize theirvision. Consider getting apair with single visiondistance lenses for someactivities such as walkingoutside.

• Make their homes safer byreducing tripping hazardssuch as rugs, adding grabbars inside and outside thetub or shower and next to thetoilet, and improving thelighting in their homes.

Helen WoodwardAnimal Center is changing theworld of animal welfare andbringing awareness to orphan petsaround the world. The group hadthe chance to experience a uniqueopportunity that supported thebond between humans andanimals. Animal therapy plays asignificant role in the older adultpopulation; studies show thatholding and caressing an animalprovides benefits such asrelaxation, lower blood pressure, improved long- and short-termmemory, and sensory stimuli.

We will continue to haveoutings that will create greatexperiences for our residents here!
