A Note From RachelleLost and Found

I was standing outside lookingat a creek gently running down aslight slope. The creek is beautiful, but all of the trees, plants, andgrass around it are dead. Thismade me look forward to thespring when the leaves will grow, the grass will sprout, and theflowers will bloom. This creekseems so lonely without life but itis about to spring to life. But it isvery exciting to think about howthis piece of land is about to cometo life with color and smell. Sothis made me think about howwinter and spring can bemetaphors for things lost andthen found.

Springtime is full of life and is atime when many of us feelrejuvenated and decide to startnew things. During spring, thenew baseball season begins, people start going to the park, festivals get going in full gear, graduations are celebrated, andconcerts are played all over town.During the winter, most of thesethings are stopped because itbecomes more difficult to enjoythese activities when it is coldoutside. As a result, we tend to beless active socially and physicallyin the winter.

This past winter has beenparticularly hard on us at Belmont

Village at West University. We lostmany friends who we held closelyto our hearts. As we rememberand celebrate the lives of ourfriends who have passed, I want tolook forward to those friends wehaven’t yet met. Spring will bringnew friends and new experiencesfor all of us. We may have lostsome, but we’ll find many.

Our new Enrichment Leader, Derrek, has his audience’s attention!

The Circle of Friends’ theme forFebruary was “Black HistoryMonth.” We enjoyed learningabout the enormously importantimpact that African Americanshave had on our nation, past andpresent. From the arts, to sciences, and everything in between,African Americans have madetheir mark on our society. We also

had a blast eating at Landry’sSeafood in Kemah and getting anup close view of the ocean!

Friendship is so much fun: Evelyn,Shirley, and Lanece.

February was full of excitementin the Neighborhood, though notall of it was welcomed: weweathered our first tornadowarning in some time, butEnrichment Leader Willie led acaptivating and hilarious activityas if it was just a typical day! OnValentine’s Day, we all enjoyedchocolates and reminisced onbeing young and in love.

Health

Save Your VisionThere’s more to March than

shamrocks and basketballtournaments. It’s also Save YourVision Month. Sponsored by theAmerican Optometric Association, this annual campaign reminds usof the importance of eye healthand regular eye exams.

It’s said that the eyes are thewindows to the soul, but they canalso be the windows to potentialhealth problems. That’s why it isimportant to schedule a yearlyexam. Regular visits to an eyedoctor will not only ensure yourprescriptions for eyeglasses arecurrent, but also check for signs ofconditions like cataracts andglaucoma. The early warning signsof other health concerns, such asdiabetes or high blood pressureand high cholesterol, can also bedetected by an eye exam.

In addition to regular visitswith an eye care professional, protect your vision by eating ahealthy diet that includes plentyof fruits and vegetables, usingappropriate lighting for readingand tasks, and protecting youreyes from harmful ultraviolet rays.

May the Road Rise Upto Meet You

May the road rise up tomeet you.

May the wind be always atyour back.

May the sun shine warmupon your face;

The rains fall soft upon yourfields

And until we meet again,May God hold youIn the palm of His hand.

Wind on the Hill byA.A. Milne

No one can tell me,Nobody knows,Where the wind comes from,Where the wind goes. It’s flying from somewhereAs fast as it can,I couldn’t keep up with it,Not if I ran.But if I stopped holdingThe string of my kite,It would blow with the windFor a day and night.

March is the windy month, but it’salso the month of St. Patrick’s Day,

so I have chosen two poems. Thefirst is the traditional Celtic

blessing of St. Patrick; the second isa child’s poem about flying a kite.
