Let’s Talk AboutPneumonia
Pneumonia is the mostcommon fatal infection andincidence is increased in elderlypopulation. Many factorscontribute to the increasedincidences of Pneumonia in theelderly that result in highmorbidity and mortality. Thechanges in the pulmonaryfunctions results in decreasedcough effectiveness and increasedresidual volume, reducing oxygensaturation that makes an elderlyperson highly susceptible. Otherrisks would be COPD orEmphysema and ChronicBronchitis.
Pneumonia is an inflammatorycondition of the lung caused byvirus or bacteria, affecting themicroscopic air sacs known asalveoli. The signs/symptoms arefatigue, fever, chills, cough, runny
nose, dyspnea or shortness ofbreath, and chest pain.Pneumococcal Pneumonia cancause coughing of blood(hemoptysis) or sputum can berusty color. Common bacteria areStreptococcus—the most commonbacteria in all age groups exceptinfants and Staphylococcusaureus.
It starts when bacteria enter thelungs with inhalation, orbloodstream if other parts of thebody are infected. The bacterialive in the upper respiratory tract .The invasion triggers the immunesystem and responds by sendingthe white blood cells (WBC) toattack the bacteria. It engulfs andkills the organism but releasescytokins that results in generalactivation of the immune system, resulting in fever, chills, fatigue—which is common with bacterialor fungal pneumonia. The whiteblood cells, bacteria fluid leakedfrom the blood vessels, fill the airsacs of the lungs and impair theoxygen transport, resulting inshortness of breath. If theinfection goes into the bloodstream, septic shock can result anddamage the other systems like thebrain, kidneys, heart. Death canresult from complications. It is soimportant to get the Pneumoniavaccination. If you have not beenvaccinated yet, now is the time.
