Belo Horizonte [one day] To become acquainted with all the attractions in Belo Horizonte more than one day is necessary. If you, however, have just one day available, here is an itinerary suggestion for you to have a good idea of the city. Understanding the City Belo Horizonte’s largest differential is that it was planned to be the new capital of Minas Gerais. The planned area is surrounded by the avenida do Contorno (Contorno Avenue). As the decades passed the city has expanded well beyond its limits of the Contorno. Today, there are tourist attractions present in all of the city’s regions. Central Region references, also known as the urban planned area, in other words, the area inside the avenida do Contorno. Principal Avenue: Afonso Pena – 4,5Km Cuts the city from north to south. It begins at the bus station and ends at the praça da Bandeira in the Mangabeiras neighbourhood. Principal Square: praça Sete de Setembro (7th of September Square) – popularly known as “Praça Sete”. It is located at the intersection between the Avenues Amazonas and Afonso Pena. Principal Avenues: Amazonas, Bias Fortes, Olegário Maciel, Augusto de Lima, Brasil, Paraná, Álvares Cabral, Getúlio Vargas, João Pinheiro and Cristovão Colombo. Principal Squares: Sete, da Liberdade, da Savassi, Raul Soares, Afonso Arinos, da Assembléia, da Estação, Tiradentes, Benjamim Guimarães, Rui Barbosa and Rio Branco (Bus station).

The city streets: The streets of the city honour the states of Brazil. In the central region are the streets named after the southern, southeastern and central-western states, in the Savassi region are the states named after the northeastern states. The streets with names of the northern states are located in the Santa Efigênia neighbourhood. A very important detail: the streets’ sequence follows that found on a map of Brazil. For example, after rua São Paulo comes Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Bahia and it continues in that sense. The streets that honour the states of Paraná and Amazons were given the names of their capitals, Curitiba and Manaus respectively. The streets that cut the streets with the state names in the central region are named after indigenous tribes such as, Tupinambás, Guarani, Tupis, Tamois and others. Those that cut the streets named after the northeastern states make tribute to Brazil’s historic characters, Tomé de Souza, Antônio de Albuquerque, Fernandes Tourinho, Tomás Gonzaga and others. Located in the central region are the neighbourhoods: Centre, Floresta, Barro Preto, Lourdes, Savassi, Funcionários and Santa Efigênia. Located to the north is Pampulha which is the name of both a neighbourhood and a large administrative region that includes many neighbourhoods. Located to the south, which is has the Curral range as its border, are the neighbourhoods of Mangabeiras, Serra, Cruzeiro and Anchieta.

Praça do Papa – praça Governador Israel Pinheiro Pope Square – Governador Israel Pinheiro Square “What a beautiful horizont…” This is the phrase uttered by Popo John Paul II when, from the high point of the Mangabeiras neighbourhood, came face-to-face with the beautiful view of the city. Located in the south zone of the city, the Mangabeiras neighbourhood is one of Belo Horizonte’s more interesting attractions. It is visited by as many tourists as city dwellers themselves. It is at the foot of the Curral Mountain Range and is very close to the Palácio das Mangabeiras (Mangabeiras Palace is the official residence of the state’s governors). The praça Israel Pinheiro was strategically chosen to be the location of the altar from which the Pope would celebrate mass with the mineiros. Installed at the highest point is a sculpture from the artist Ricardo Carvão Levi, in honour of the Pope’s visit to the city and marking the place in which the altar stood.

This place has an excellent view from a great part of Belo Horizonte.Next to the praça do Papa is the famous rua do Amendoim (Peanut Street).

Rua do Amendoim Peanut Street Considered as “tourist folklore”, the rua do Amendoim, which is a gravity hill, is one of the most visited locations in the city and spikes the curiosity of both tourists and locals. Address: rua Professor Otávio Coelho Magalhães – the official name of the place.
