THE PARTNERS IN LEARNING FEEDBACK SURVEY We request K-6 parents to participate in a 15 minute long confidential survey which asks questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at Belrose PS. These include communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feed-back will help our school make practical improvements. Please click below to link straight to the survey. This is open until 26 October 2018

CLICK HERE FOR: BELROSE PS PARENTS SURVEY ASSISTANCE We have had a number of events which have coincidentally occurred around this time of the year. Having worked in four schools in the last 7 years, I am particularly impressed with the students’ responsibility to be ready for each activity from having his/her dance costumes to collecting their own possessions from the playground. I am unsure if it is their effective listening skills at an-nouncements, the newsletter is well-read, our reminder emails, perhaps your constant ’nagging’ or that you are blessed with having reliable and responsible children but a general thank you to everyone for assisting us within our very busy school. TRIPLE P WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS Following my enquiries, I have secured places for interested Belrose PS parents to attend a workshop, Triple P on Thursday 18 October at Killarney Heights Public School from 6:00-8:00pm. The workshop is tailored for parents of children aged 3 to 8 and will present themes on anxiety, communication, resilience and friendships. As soon as the details are communicated to me, I will publish them in an upcoming newsletter. LIFE EDUCATION All next week as part of the PD/Health/PE curriculum a lesson will be delivered by a teacher from Life Education NSW. This pro-gram is a community-based, independent organisation at the front line of positive and preventative drug and health education. Approximately 350 000 students and 30 000 families take part in the program each year. Its aim is to help young people make informed decisions about drugs and their health. The Healthy Harold Life Education van will be parked in our carpark awaiting the students for their 1-1.5 hours lesson with the specialised educator. All classes will attend the van with their teacher and fol-lowing the lesson, student workbooks and stickers will be distributed. During the week, with the day to be yet confirmed students may bring money to purchase a variety of merchandise. 2017 prices were: Tattoo - 50c Harold Sticky Note Pad - $1.50 Harold Keyring - $3.00 Harold handball - $3.00 Harold Stationery set - $3.00 Small Harold Soft Toy - $8.00 Large Harold Soft Toy - $15.00 Activity Bags - $1.50 The students will be covering the following topics: KINDERGARTEN - MY BODY MATTERS My Body Matters focuses on things children can do to keep themselves healthy - covering hygiene, nutrition, physical activity, and safety at home, school, and in the community. Clearly aligned to the Australian Curriculum, this module helps children un-derstand that a healthy lifestyle is an important step towards making positive healthy choices now and into the future. YEAR 1 - READY STEAY GO Ready, Steady, Go! focuses on the benefits of healthy eating, physical activity, strategies to stay safe, and how our body reacts in different situations. YEAR 2 - GROWING GOOD FRIENDS Growing Good Friends explores what contributes to positive health and wellbeing - such as physical activity, nutrition, under-standing health messages, personal safety, and positive relationships. YEAR 3 - ALL SYSTEMS GO All Systems Go’ focuses on the human body, how unique it is and what is needed to keep it healthy. Developed by Life Educa-tion with the support of Bupa, this session helps your child understand why maintaining a healthy body and brain is the key to leading an active and productive life, and gives them the tools to make sure they stay healthy. Children discover: How to make healthy choices and that what we eat, drink and breathe affects the whole body and how it works That physical activity and an active lifestyle leads to a healthy body inside and out Helpful ways to keep safe from second hand smoking YEAR 4 - MIND YOUR MEDICINE ‘Mind Your Medicine’ helps children to explore medicines, how they can help and affect the body and why some people need them, as well as how the social and emotional aspects of health can positively or negatively affect health and wellbeing. In a game show format with games, quizzes and short videos, children are encouraged to answer questions, solve problems and start discussions to help them develop skills and strategies to navigate their way onto into a safe and healthy adulthood.

YEAR 5 - DECISIONS It is a fun interactive learning experience that aims to empower children to make safer and healthier choices. In today’s complex world it can be challenging for children to make safe, healthy decisions. The decision by some young people to use alcohol, to-bacco or other drugs can prevent them from reaching their full potential. This module offers a choice of content on legal and ille-gal drugs. Students will have explored the decision-making process and improve decision-making skills by looking at choices, consequences, responsibility, facts, and influences. • What is a drug and how drugs are classified • Effects of drugs on the body • Analysing health messages about drugs in the media • Messages around non-use – normative data – dispelling myths • Influences on decision making – family, peers, media, culture, financial, legal • Strategies and skills to be safe YEAR 6—RELATE, RESPECT, CONNECT Relate, Respect ,Connect is a unique, contemporary learning experience that explores building positive, safe and respectful rela-tionships. Continuing our proud tradition of empowering children and young people to make safe and healthier choices through education, Relate, Respect, Connects equips students with knowledge, skills and strategies to help them develop safe and re-spectful relationships - face to face and online. BELROSE PS HOSTS PRINCIPALS Today, we welcomed a number of Principals and their Executive teams to a network meeting in our ICT and STEM room. The two hour session on using SCOUT, a Business Intelligence platform was well received which assists us with evidence-based decision making and planning using statistics and trends. Thank you to our Leadership Team for presenting the Welcome to Country speech to the Principals and for showing the Principals our innovative STEM related work. Belinda Zorian Principal

Year 5 are studying a literacy text called 'Lennie the Legend' by Stephanie Ow-

en Reeder. This text is set in the time of the Great Depression and is also the

basis for our History program. We were wondering, if there are any Grandpar-

ents/Great Grandparents in our school community, who might be interested in

visiting our classes to share what life was like back in the Depression. In addi-

tion, some family members may have historical artefacts of that time that they

could also share with our classes.

A huge thank you to Vicki and Andrew Fairclough and Sue and

Phil Hefford from ‘Oliver Hire’ who helped us collect and deliver

the different items for our ‘Recycled Vegetable Garden’. Some

of these items are huge and we really appreciate these families

giving their time, utes and muscles. We would also like to thank

Belrose Bunnings who have provided compost bins and pots and

will continue to support the garden over the coming months.

Students from our Environmental Committee have been busy

preparing the beds for planting. We still have lots of work ahead,

painting the different items and planting lots of herbs and veggies.

We look forward to watching this garden flourish!

AUTHOR VISIT AND BOOK PARADE On Wednesday 22 August Oliver Phommavanh came to our school and he was the best. Oliver was very funny. Oliver also showed us his books: - Thai-riffic, Con-Nerd, Super Con-Nerd, Punch Lines and Thai-No-Mite and his new book is Natural Born Loser. In my experience this was the funniest and best author visit.

By Matt D On Wednesday we went to the library to listen to a book writer talk to us. His name was Oliver Phammavanh, he is a really nice person and made everyone laugh. He had a massive pile of toys he has collected on his trips. It was really joyful to watch him talk about his life and books. We would really love it if he comes again. Thank you Oliver Phammavanh.

By Caelan B Oliver is a really nice and a funny person. Everyone was laughing when he told jokes and he does a lot of things with his teddys. He told us that when he was in Year 1 he started writing stories also when he was in year one he wanted to be a dinosaur he even had gloves and was scaring people in his class. Oliver was a primary school teacher for a while and once a week there was a world record day where his class tried to break world records.

By Lachlan C Our school had a blast last Monday and Wednesday with our book week celebrations. It was great with the Book Week Parade and Oliver Phommavanh, the author. Everyone had a great time. I like how Oliver was funny and interacted with the audience. He had many toys that he had collected over the years.

By Liam W Monday was a great day because it was Book Week parade. Dressing up in cool costumes with incredible items from your favourite books—what’s not to love? Every class showed off their amazing costumes by walking around the hall. It was super fun seeing everyone’s costumes. Two days later it was the author visit day. A hilarious writer named Oliver Phommavanh came to our school to tell us about his books, funny life stories and his inspirations. The whole school had a blast!

By Ben J What a start to the week! So many costumes—unicorns, witches and much more. Probably one of the best Book Parades that has ever happened at Belrose Public School. When we went into the hall so many parents, grandparents and teachers were smiling as we went around for two laps of the hall. Can’t wait for next year/
