BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY
Fact Book 2011‐12
Preface The Bemidji State University (BSU) Fact Book provides general statistical and descriptive information about the university which may be useful to those engaged in planning, assessment, preparing reports, writing grant proposals or other endeavors within the university. The Fact Book is a reference tool that provides a picture of BSU for fiscal year 2012 by using Fall 2011 (30th day) data, along with historical trend data. While not all available data has been gathered, the data accurately represents the major areas of the university. Data may differ from other university and state reports. Such variances result from source of information used, the date on which the report was generated or the reporting period included in the data. Trends should be tracked using identical data sources over time.
A Brief History of Bemidji State University In 1919, Bemidji State Normal School began its first regular school year with 38 students. The school was chartered by the Minnesota State Legislature in response to a growing need for public school teachers, and teacher training was its primary curriculum. Then, in a pattern familiar to American higher education, in 1921 Bemidji Normal School became Bemidji State Teachers College, offering a four‐year degree. Reflecting ongoing changes in the curriculum, the school was renamed Bemidji State College in 1957. In 1975, in recognition of its growing role as a multi‐purpose educational institution, it became Bemidji State University. Now BSU hosts over 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It offers majors in more than fifty baccalaureate fields of study as well as master of arts and master of science degrees. Some of its degree programs and research activities are unique to the state.
