Art in Time

Nuances of Hand Made Tiles

For centuries, hand painted Ceramics have been revered and collected by people of all walks of life and cultures. The prices of these products range fromreasonable to very expensive, but regardless of price, the nuances and character of hand painting is constant.

Benaya in partnership with our Guilds have invested in new glaze formulas to avoid crazing as much as possible, which will be evident in our products. Crazing is the most common occurrence in hand painted tiles. Consider how each piece is made; the raw clay is formed into a bisque; the picture is then drawn onto it and the raised line work (tube lining) is then applied by hand; the artist then apply the colours in layers, giving it that rich depth perception; fi nally it is fi red at 1000 Celsius (1800 Fahrenheit) for 22 hours.

The construction of the clay material and the paint/glaze material are very different, and the varying temperatures (heating & cooling) cause minute amounts of shrinkage and expansion tothese materials. All this contributes to movement in these elements, which results in “Crazing”.

Crazing can happen at different stagesof the tile’s life, ranging from hours after being fi red to months or even years later. Master craftspeople consider this type of product to be alive, and liken crazing to tiles as wrinkles are to people.
