Bend Endurance Academy BOD May 13, 2009

The Bend Endurance Academy held an organizational meeting in mid-May to establish the Board of Directors. Maria Madden was elected President, Adrienne Graham will serve as Vice President, Gene Fitzsimmons is the Secretary/Treasurer and Monica McClain Smith will be a Chairperson.

The BOD has adopted BEA’s articles of incorporation, bylaws, conflict of interest policy and quarterly budget. The IRS form 1023 is undergoing a final review by BEA’s lawyers. Once the form is mailed, BEA is free to act as a nonprofit organization. However, receipts for tax deductible donations will have to wait until BEA receives its official nonprofit determination letter from the IRS, which may take a few months. We will keep you updated on our progress!

BOD activities, information and updates are available at www.BendEnduranceAcademy.org

Currently the BOD would love your feedback on our mission statement (see page 1) or hear your questions or ideas for the Bend Endurance Academy. Comments may be directed to [email protected]

Oregon Bicycle Racing Association Awards Jr. Development Grant to Bend Cycling Club June 1, 2009

Bend Endurance Academy Staff

The Oregon Bicycle Racing Association awarded a junior development grant to the Bend Endurance Academy’s cycling club. According to OBRA Executive Director, Kenji Sugahara, "The mission of OBRA is to promote and develop the sport of bicycle racing in Oregon by providing the tools and resources necessary for competition. OBRA values safety, participation, sportsmanship, teamwork, camaraderie and fun.”

According to Brenna Knowles, Bend Cycling Club Coach, “This grant will allow us to further develop our fleet of loaner bikes and get more young people out riding regardless of their ability to afford a bike. It will also help us support young riders who are ready to travel to races. We are thrilled to have OBRA’s support.”

Bend Bicycle Film Festival

Supports Bend Cycling Club May 29, 2009

Bend Endurance Academy Staff

The Bend Cycling Club received a donation from the 1st Annual Bend Bicycle Film Festival which was held

at the Tower Theatre on May 29th

The sold out BBFF featured local short videos and slide shows of all cycling disciplines. Event organizer, Paul Lissette said that BBFF organizers chose to support Bend Endurance Academy athletes because, “these young people will eventually be responsible for the health of our communities trail systems. While they benefit from the work that COTA (Central Oregon Trail Alliance) does now, they will eventually be responsible for maintaining the trails that we all love.” Ben Husaby of the Bend Endurance Academy said, “We are pleased to have been chosen by the film festival organizers as a worthy group to support. It was clear to see the event left an impression as people were still excited about it days afterwards.”

Recognized by PNSA May 30, 2009 Bend Endurance Academy Staff

The Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA) presented Bill Warburton with an Unsung Hero award at their annual convention in Bend this past weekend. The award is given out annually to members of Pacific Northwest ski clubs who contribute “efforts above and beyond the duty of any volunteer.” Warburton was recognized for his efforts in creating the Bend Endurance Academy and serving as Chief of Course for the 2009 PNSA Junior Olympic Qualifying races at Mt. Bachelor. Warburton said, “It’s nice to be recognized for helping the kids. I really want our division to succeed at the national level so I’ll continue to support them in any way I can.” BNT Represents..continued from page 1

Madden and Smith will attend camp from June 21-28 in Park City, Utah at the US Ski Team‘s new Center Of Excellence. Husaby will lead the National Junior Elite camp in September at the 2010 Olympic venue in Vancouver, British Columbia. Only four athletes were selected from the Pacific Northwest region for the Western Regional camp. The camp brings together the top young Nordic skiers from 8 western states. Madden and Smith were selected based on their achievements at the Junior National Championships this past season. Pat Madden placed 19

th in the sprint, 11

th in

the individual classic and had the fastest leg in the relay. Tom Smith placed 6

th in the sprint, 12

th in the individual

skate, 8th in the skate race and had the 3

rd fastest relay leg.

According to Madden, “I am very excited to have been selected as one of the top junior skiers in the west. The camp will give me the opportunity to train with the best young skiers in the country”. The camp will be attended by US Ski Team staff. Two boys and two girls from the western region will be invited to participate in the National Elite training camp at the 2010 Olympic venue in Vancouver, British Columbia in September. The National Junior Elite camp will be run in conjunction the US Ski Team, who will be holding a final camp at the Olympic venue prior to the games. America’s top junior skiers selected for the camp will be training alongside the US Olympians for one week. According to Husaby, “I am honored to have been selected for this role. The US Ski Team is already thinking about the next 4 years, for these young racers to have the opportunity to train at the Olympic Venue with our Olympians is the best possible motivator”.

Bend Nordic/PNSA Summer Camps June 22, 2009

Bend Endurance Academy Staff

The Bend Endurance Academy was awarded three grants totaling $1500 to support development camps for PNSA’s junior Nordic skiers. Staff from the Bend Nordic Team ran the first camp from June 17-21, and they are now busy planning the next two camps: July 15-19 and August 12-16. According to BNT graduate and Montana State University student Allie Phillips,” As a college skier, I spend much of the summer training by myself and I come to the camps to feel the energy of the group and to see if I’ve been training correctly. These camps also help me focus my training. The training is really fun and it is good for the younger skiers to see that they can keep skiing after high school.” Registration for camps is open, the fee is $200/camp and complete details are online at www.BendNordic.org The camps are open to participants ages 14-22 with skiing/rollerskiing experience. BNT Coach Brenna Knowles says,”These camps are beneficial to national level athletes as well as relative beginners. We are excited to welcome skiers from the Northwest as well as from across the country.” According to BNT Coach Ben Husaby,” Trout Lake will boast 6 coaches and over 40 athletes making this the biggest Nordic camp ever hosted by PNSA. We are excited that the Methow Olympic Development team including Erik Bjornsen, Sadie Bjornsen, Jamie Baronga, Sam Naney and Coach Scott Johnston have chosen to attend.”
