themes of concern to anthropology,
sociology, and political science as viewed
by the film industry in Hollywood. The film
industry has confronted and explored
various social issues through its films.
Themes such as poverty, racism, war, the
environment, cultural identity, political
corruption, social justice, etc., are often the
central themes of Hollywood movies and
documentaries.

in Costa Rica
10:00 - 10:50 a.m. Thornburg Costa Rica is considered one of the
foremost environmentally friendly countries
in the world. This course will cover the
history and development of Costa Rica's
environment policy and action, how
communities engage the environment in
terms of tourism, multinational agricultural
companies, and economic development.
We will meet with government officials,
environmental experts, and community
action groups. We will also travel to Costa
Rica on a 10 day study tour to learn
firsthand about Costa Rica's environmental
record. The study tour is designed to be
very interactive with local people and
organizations. We will visit and stay in
small towns along the Caribbean coast,
visiting Tortugaro National Park, Cahuita,
Puerto Viego, and the BriBri Indigenous
Reserve. The estimated cost of the trip
(over spring break) is $2100 (includes
airfare, hotels, meals, in-country
transportation, professional translator). A
stipend is available to help defray some of
the cost. Contact Dr. Thornburg for more
information. Sustainability (Su), Global
(G), Engaged Learning (EL) and Learning
Community (LC) designated Course. Must
be coenrolled in LCOM 241 This course
satisfies the Learning Community
requirement and requires co-registration in
LCOM 241. LCOM 241 is not an additional
or separate course; it is used only for
recording purposes on student transcripts.
