NEIGHBORHOODWATCH ALERT

**************************

It has been reported that an attempted home break-in oc-curred in Fairfield during the month of July ’04, at approxi-mately 2 a.m. while the homeowners slept. The individual(s)rang the doorbell and when no one responded or turned ona light alerting them that someone was home, they left, observed by the homeowner who had come to the door, possibly in a white Suburban. A short while later, theindividual(s) returned on foot and threw landscaping rocksthrough the windows, possibly to gain access. The home-owner, who had gone back to bed, turned lights on andbegan shouting and the person(s) fled on foot. Fortunately, the offender(s) did not enter the home and no one was in-jured.

Please know your neighbors, be aware of your surround-ings at all times, and by all means do not open your door toany unknown person(s). You might consider leaving a lighton at night or installing a motion detector light.

If you plan to install play equipment, please include a copy of your lot surveyshowing the proposed location and the dimensions of the equipment (height, widthand length) as well as the type of cover for the “A” frame.

If you’re painting your home, please include a sample of the color(s) you wish touse.

Your kind help is still needed for FOSTERING THOSE LOST PETS!

For all you animal lovers: There are many times, in our community, when people find a lost animal/pet and can’t pick it up because theyhave no place to shelter the animal until the owner is either found ornotified and comes to claims it.

This is where your kind help is needed. We are asking for residents inthe Fairfield community to volunteer their homes and backyards to fos-ter a lost animal for 1 to 2 days – until the owner is located and theanimal is returned to that owner.

Not only will this keep the animal from being injured, killed, impregnat-ing another stray, or being picked up by Animal Control, it will insurethe children and families of the community are kept sale also.

If you are interested in being a foster home for someone’s lost animal/pet, please call me, Geri Bishop, at 281-304-0283.

Thanks so much!

Dear Fairfield Residents,

Have you noticed the yellow ribbons around our neighborhood? These pretty ribbons show support for our military men and womenserving our nation. I enjoy and appreciate seeing these ribbons on adaily basis. You see, our son is a medic in the U.S. Army stationed in Iraqand these yellow ribbons speak to me. Each ribbon represents a heart. Thus, I’m askingyou to display yellow ribbons in your yard to remind us all of the efforts these people doto provide us the freedoms we enjoy daily.

With the recent deaths of several area service men, these ribbons take on a very per-sonal meaning. This letter is not intended to state whether or not our troops should be inIraq; it is much more personal than that. It is intended to persuade you to join together tomake Fairfield a premier neighborhood whose voices reach personally to individual ser-vice personnel showing words of acknowledgement, appreciation, and encouragement.

Therefore, I am also asking individuals, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Women’s clubs, sportsteams, senior clubs, and churches to take time to send cards or letters to a specific serviceperson until they come home. If you would like an individual name and address to sendyour words to, just call me (281-373-0142) and I’ll gladly provide you with one. I’m surethere are other families in Fairfield who have loved ones and friends serving in the mili-tary. If you would like to submit a person’s name and address as a recipient, drop theirinformation into the decorated box at the Fairfield Athletic Center.Together we can reach around the world and bring Texas to those protecting us all!

Sincerely,Peggy Gardner, Fairfield Resident

Let’s Show Our SUPPORT!

Here’s one of our brave countryman overin Iraq; please show your love and sup-port by sending Kevin cards, letters, careboxes, whatever you can to show himhe’s in our hearts, thoughts and prayers:

Dear Fairfield Neighbors,

My name is Matthew Clevenger, I am 3 ½ years old and I have had Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes sinceI was 9 months old. I have lived in Fairfield my whole life. It is that time of year again and myfamily and I are getting ready for the big event. This year’s walk will take place on Sunday, October24th, 2004, at Greenspoint Mall. Because of donations like yours, we pray that one day researcherswill find a cure! I am so excited that I will be one of this years Ambassador’s representing JDRF.

My mom & dad have to check my glucose (sugar level) at least 8 times a day. I wear an insulin pumpto help control my blood sugar. I will be insulin-dependent for the rest of my life or until a cure.Insulin is not a cure, but only serves as a life support. I am beginning to understand and questiondiabetes. I asked my mom the other day, “Mommy, why did God give me Diabetes?” I truly believethere will be a cure, and that it is closer each day. I am amazed at how much advancement has takenplace in the last 10 years . . . imagine what will happen in the next 10!

I am praying that I will not be insulin-dependent for the restof my life, because a cure WILL HAPPEN , especially withindividuals like you supporting this cause. On Sunday, Octo-ber 24th, 2004, we are going to do more than just “hope” for acure. We are going to participate in the JDRF’s Walk to CureDiabetes. We are asking you to please make a difference forme and all children living with diabetes by:

• Joining our Family Team, known as “Matthew’s Marchers”, which consists of family andfriends who collect pledges and walk with us;

- OR -• Drop off a tax deductible donation, made out to JDRF, at the Fairfield Recreation Center,

or by credit card at JRRF.org, in Matthew Clevenger’s name.

Our family thanks you in advance for your support and we hope to see you October 24th!

With sincere thanks,Matthew, Jennifer & David Clevenger281-256-1948 * [email protected]

Moms In Touch International

Every week, in every state of the U.S. and in 85 countries around the world, thousands of mothers meet to pray for their children and their schools. Theygather in Mexico, New Zealand, China, Germany, India, Uganda, Egypt,Romania, Russia and many other countries. They are all part of Moms InTouch International, an interdenominational, nonprofit ministry of womenwho believe prayer makes a difference.

The group was founded in 1984 by Fern Nichols while she was stationed inAbbotsford, British Colombia with a Christian ministry. She had two sonsentering junior high school. Nichols knew her boys were going to facetheir greatest test yet in resisting immoral values, vulgar language, and peerpressure. She found other concerned mothers, and they began meeting forprayer.

The following summer Nichols and her family moved to Poway, California, where by the fall of 1985, a group was established at Poway High School. The women met once a week and prayed for a full hour for their childrenand the school. They prayed for a Moms In Touch group for every school intheir district, and they shared the concept with their friends and other momsthey met. Two years later, Nichols published a Moms In Touch booklet, andthe following January the first Moms In Touch retreat was held. Todaythere are thousands of Moms In Touch groups meeting worldwide.

The organization’s goal is to have a group of two or more moms praying forevery school in this country and throughout the world. We know our chil-dren face many challenges at school (academics, drugs, peer pressure andviolence), and to stand in the gap for them through prayer is our highestcalling.

The mothers meet once a week to pray for teachers, principals and admin-istrators, conferences, respect for authority, curriculum choices, holidaysituations, coaches and athletic programs, high standards, family values, after school programs, problems faced by the students and for the specificneeds of the children of the mothers in the group.

If you are interested in joining a Moms In Touch group, please call Alecia Mallett at 281 -256-0433

We Need Volunteers and Families!Family to Family Network is an organization that empowers fami-lies of children with disabilities by providing information, training, referral and support. We are initiating a new project in the Hous-ton area called Family Friends. It is an intergenerational programthat matches volunteers (age 55+) with children with special needsand their families. The Family Friend (volunteer) will visit the homeonce a week for a couple of hours to offer support and encourage-ment by reading a book, playing, and become a friend! The family gains from the emotional support provided by the volun-teer. Their visits often give family members a break from caringfor their child with disabilities, all the while knowing the child is ingood hands. The Volunteers offer their special skills, wisdom, support and lifeexperiences. They gain a sense of pride knowing that they are mak-ing a difference in the family’s life. The Community is strengthened by volunteers providing supportiveservices that would otherwise prove too costly for the families.

If you are 55 years or older or have a child with a disability andare interested in this wonderful program,

Please call Patricia McMahan or Aline Houston atFamily to Family Network (713)-466-6304

GAZETTE SPOTLIGHT

Q:What do you teach at FDC?A: Since the studio has opened I have taught a little bit of

everything - ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, technique, condi-tioning and hip hop for students of all ages.

Q:Why is dancing so important to you?A: Dancing has been a part of my life every since I can remember. It is not only

something that I do, but a part of who I am. To listen to a song and be able to relatethe music or lyrics to my own life experiences, and then express this throughmovement and share it with an audience...it is a feeling that can never be put intowords.

Q:With a new baby, has it been difficult juggling motherhood and teaching?A: Kennedy is the light of my life - a joy that I never really knewuntil she came into

this world. It can be very difficult at times juggling being a Mom, office work, teaching classes and sleeping. However, I am very lucky to have a wonderfulsupport system of family and friends.

Q:Why will you encourage your daughter to dance?A: I hope that Kennedy finds the joy in dancing that her father and I do. If she chooses

to dance, I will encourage and nurture her in hopes it will heighten her self-esteemand motivate her in life.

Q:What movies or stage productions are your current favorites?A: Some of my old favorites are West Side Story, Signing in the Rain, The Music

Man, and A Chorus Line. More recently, The Lion King and Rent. Q:What else would you like to tell us?A: Teaching is a way that I can share my love of dance with every student that walks

through the studio doors. Not everyone is going to pursue dance as a career, but itshould always be a positive experience. I want each student to come to class eachweek excited and enthusiastic about dancing, and I want them to leave each weekwith a greater self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

Q:What do you teach at FDC?A: I teach Hip Hop, Jazz, Tap, Break-Dancing and

Lyrical Dance.Q:Rumor has it you were not teaching anymore? Is that

true?A: Not true at all! I have only cut back a bit on my

teaching to spend energy on my production company. You will definitely see my shining face in class this year!

Q:What’s been going on with your production company,Round Rock Productions?

A: Round Rock is going great. We just finished a new show called “Rhythm ‘NFunk” and we are slated to have bookings in Germany and Mexico this year. Wehave expanded our market to include corporate events, and look forward to pro-viding the after-hours entertainment for the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce Busi-ness Expo in September.

Q:What’s your favorite new song to dance to?A: I love the new song by Maroon 5. Q:Why is dancing so important to you?A: Dancing, performing and producing is the way I express my feelings in an artistic

way. Whenever I feel stressed or upset, I go into the studio and just dance - nochoreography, no blocking, just letting go. It is the best feeling I know.

Q:Why should people try Hip Hop?A: Hip Hop offers so much to people of every age. The younger students enjoy the

music and a way to just let go. They do not have to worry about the jazz and ballettechnique, they just flow with the music. The teenagers love to learn the cool andhappening moves. The college students and adults enjoy it as a fun way to exer-cise without having to use a treadmill, weights or fad contraption.

Q:What else would you like to tell us?A: We want to offer kids and adults a great experience not only inside the dance

studio, but as a way to meet new friends, have performance opportunities, and geta small taste of the entertainment world. If my teacher had not done this for me, Iwould have followed my other dream of being a chemist. I think I’m having morefun now than I ever could have imagined!

Cy-Fair Band Program

One of the advantages of living in the Cy Fair School District is their commitment to the school music programs. The band program is outstanding.Instrumental music begins in the 6th grade where each day students have one period of music instruction grouped within the specific instruments. For example, the flutes learn together, as do the clarinets, the trumpets, the low brass and percussion. After 36 weeks of 45 minutes a day, thestudent has learned many aspects of the instrument and musicianship. The students then progress to the 4 bands leveled for ability.

Mrs. Pricilla Bell, the band director of Goodson Middle School said that currently there are 165 beginning band students and 235 continuingstudents divided into the 4 bands. This is the largest middle school program in the district. Mrs. Bell said, “We are busting at the band seams andwe love it!” They have 2 other directors, Mr. Alex Hinojosa and Ms. Nicole Huerta. Throughout their middle school experience the students areable to participate in UIL contests for the bands, in which they are rated against a state wide standard with “1” being a superior rating. These bandshave consistently been rated superior since the school opened in 2001. The students are also encouraged to perform in individual competitions suchas solo and ensemble festivals. Goodson walked away with 200 medals this past year. Many of the students also audition for Region Band and earna spot. One of the highlights for the year is when the 8th graders are able to perform at a Cy-Fair football game in the stands along side the Cy-FairHigh School marching band. This sets the stage for their freshman year in which they are on the field performing at halftime.

Mr. Mark Veenstra, director of the band program at the Cy-Fair High School always looks forward to each years band. This years band consists of280 students. The directors spend a lot of time choosing the program and watching it come together. To watch the progression of the initialpractices with all the students trying to learn their music and move to their designated spots for their performances on the football field, you can seeall the hard work, practice and dedication that go into making Cy-Fair Marching Band one of the most respected bands in the area.

One of the exciting things for the band students is the cohesiveness. Practice begins in late July and by the time school starts, many freshmen havealready made new friends. There is the big sister/big brother program which connects an upperclassman to an incoming freshman. There are thetraditional get-togethers including skating parties, swim parties, lock-ins and a semi formal band banquet at the end of the year. All the studentsperform at the varsity football games and the competition band performs at area marching band competitions throughout the season.

The color guard is a very big part of the marching band, their graceful movements with flags, rifles and swords adds to the overall performance. Thecolor guard, under the direction of Mr. Jeremy Baudoin , continue to perform in winter competitions and this past year placed 18th in the world intheir division in San Diego, CA.

After football season, all the band students continue with their 5 different leveled bands under the direction of Mr. Mark Veenstra, Mr. Skip Martin,Ms. Shirley Holstein and Mr. Chris Young. Students continue to compete in UIL competitions, solo and ensemble competitions and other bandcompetitions throughout the U.S. Many audition and earn a spot for Region Band, Area Band and All State Band. Last school year, all the bandsperformed in San Antonio for the Bluebonnet Classic Band Festival and won sweepstakes in all categories. Band continues to be part of the livesfor many Cy-Fair students after graduation. Many of the band’s serious musicians go on to college and major in music, with some receiving fullscholarships. Some students major in other areas and perform with the college marching or symphonic bands.

Cy-Fair’s Marching Band performed in the 1999 Rose Bowl Parade and are awaiting acceptance to perform in the 2006 parade. This would be awonderful experience for the students and for the residents of the Cy-Fair School District. We will keep you posted!!

Come to a Cy-Fair High School Varsity football game this season and see the award winning Cy-Fair Marching Band perform their show “Heart-beat”.

FAIRFIELD COMMUNITY GAZETTE

Harvest Bible ChurchIn chapters 2-3 of the Book of Revelation Jesus Christ addressed sevenfirst-century churches. In each church he encouraged what was goodand rebuked what was wrong in their midst. At the end of each discoursehe said, “He who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit says to thechurches.” In other words, what Jesus said to those churches applies toall churches.

All churches today do some things well and some things not-so-well.But the things we do not-so-well must never be excused and relegated to“we’re only human!” for Jesus severely rebukes our shortcomings. Sincethe church itself is the actual body of Christ, it should be perfect, that is,above reproach in its character. For those who call themselves Chris-tians Jesus commends hard work in laboring to teach the Scriptures, perseverance under trial and persecution, no toleration of evil men andevil practices within the church, the testing false prophets, and spiritualgrowth in the face of financial poverty. Jesus also commends those whoare willing to die for the sake of his name. And in the first century thiswas the norm.

Now Jesus also rebukes sinful behavior in the church. Jesus severelyrebukes those who obey God but have no love for Him, those who toler-ate others in the church who live in sin as well as those who toleratefalse teachers – those who teach things contrary to the Scriptures. Heseverely rebuke churches who have good reputations from the past butwho have no spiritual life in the present. And he most severely rebukechurches with spiritual indifference – churches that are “lukewarm.” Rev.

3:16 says that these kinds of churches make him want to vomit! Howdoes indifference enter into a church? Through excessive riches whichcause us to believe that all is well when it really isn’t. This describes somany churches today. Our material wealth makes us indifferent to ourneed for the Savior.

Let all churches today who read this take inventory of their spiritual life.Even though all Christian churches have something to commend, wecan always be better. Jesus even warned the churches of the first centurythat if they didn’t fix what was wrong he would come and take theirchurches away from them. He meant business! The bottom line is thatwe are the body of Jesus Christ, and as a result of our many shortcom-ings and our indifference to them we tend to make a mockery of JesusChrist. Let us go forth and represent him the way He was intended to berepresented – in truth! That truth, and all the rest of the answers to life, isfound in the Bible – the pure word of God. In it alone will you find theanswer to eternal life in heaven with God.

If you’d like to know more about the Bible and/or you are looking for achurch in the Fairfield area, the people of Harvest Bible Church inviteyou to join us on Sunday mornings. We meet for small group Bible studyand children’s Sunday School from 9:30-10:15, and our corporate wor-ship hour is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Ault Elementary. Fruitful Word MinistriesSomeone posed the question to me this week, “What one right would you

have the most difficulty giving up for a day?” My immediate response was,“The right to be treated with respect.” After all, Scripture tells us to considerothers better than ourselves. Each person was created by God with valueand purpose. Yes, being treated with respect is certainly a reasonable expec-tation. “Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity as a child of God,”I thought. Yet as I spoke those words, I had that uncomfortable feeling inmy spirit I’ve learned to recognize as the Holy Spirit’s conviction.

My thoughts flashed to Jesus standing in Pilate’s court as the crowdshouted, “Crucify him!” (Mark 15:12-13). Hardly respect. Soldiers mockedJesus, thrust the crown of thorns upon his brow and struck him with a staff. They even spit on him! Not a word of rebuke left Jesus’ lips.

When the nails pierced our Lord’s hands and He was crucified as a com-mon criminal, Jesus’ only request was “Father, forgive them, for they do notknow what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). Not once did Jesus demandrespect. He was the Son of God. He was El Shaddai — an all sufficient, powerful God. If anyone had the right to be treated with respect, it was He.

Philippians 2:5-8 says: Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesushad. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God.He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and ap-peared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himselfeven further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross. (NLT)

Like me, do you feel entitled to a certain level of respect? Maybe youcling to the right to make your own decisions. Perhaps you expect to enjoythe comforts our society offers. But our Lord encountered contempt moreoften than reverence. As He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesusrelinquished His choice to avoid the crucifixion. And as our Savior hung on

the cross, He abandoned His comfort so we could one day enjoy the eternalluxuries of Heaven.

What right do you have difficulty relinquishing? I challenge you to let goof that right for a week. Make a conscious effort to take on the submissiveattitude of Christ. It promises to be a humbling experience.—Mindy Ferguson,Copyright © 2004 Fruitful Word Ministries, Inc.For information on this ministry visit our web site at www.fruitfulword.org
