The literary monthly Kali O Kalam and the world’s local bank HSBC have jointly launched Tarun Kabi O Lekhak Puraskar to encourage and inspire literary practice among young poets and writers of Bangladesh. The competition for the award was first held in 2008.

Works published between July of one year and June of the next, by poets and writers between the ages of 18 to 40 years ,are eligible for the competition. In 2009 prizes were given in two categories - Poetry and Creative Writing. A third category was included the next year. The third cycle declared in October 2010 had 2 additional awards raising the total number of categories to 5; these are - Poetry, Creative Writing, Research and Drama, Writings on the War of Liberation and Juvenile Literature. The Board of Jurors comprises of eminent writers and literary critics. The award ceremony held in April each year is widely attended. Each winner receives a cheque for Tk. 100,000, a crest, a trophy and a citation. The function is brought to a close with a musical soiree.

The Young Poet Award for 2008 went to Obayed Akash for his book of poems titled Shiter Prakar. The Young Writer Award was given to Saymon Zakaria for his research document titled Bangladesher Loko Natya: Angik-Boichitra.

In April 2010, three young writers- novelist Ahmed Mustafa Kamal for his book Andha Jadukar, essayist Azizul Parvez for his book Ekaturer Gonohotya and poet Ahmed Munir for his book Ami O Bagharu - received the awards.

In the third cycle held in 2011, awards could only be given in 4 categories because no befitting work was submitted in the category of Juvenile Literature. The four awardees were : Kazi Rafi for his fictional novel Dhusar Swapner Sasandra, Prasanta Mridha for his book Galper Khoje, Apurba Sharma for his research-based novel Sylhete Juddhaparadh O Prasangik Dalilpatra and Tokon Thakur for his book of poems Bhashay Prakash Kora Jay Na.
