This autumn, our BENTELI program offers you both no-
table and debatable items, beginning in May 2014 with our brilliant catalogue titled Paying No Attention I Notice Everything, which accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Aar-gauer Kunsthaus. Current positions clearly indicate what kind of impact author Robert Walser is having on contemporary art, viewed against the backdrop of the world of images of Walser’s times. We invite you to participate in this dialogue between liter-ature and visual arts. In the photographic genre, we focus on the whole spectrum of documentary and artistic works. In his photographic essay Im Keller/In the Basement, Austrian film director Ulrich Seidl undertakes a nightmare journey through the depths of the Aus- trian soul. This publication is due to appear in autumn 2014, when Seidl launches his new film of the same name. Reports for Freedom of Information, edited by Reporters Without Borders, Switzerland, represents a completely different form of documentary report. This annual reminds us that human rights are not observed everywhere in the world. In our photography program you will also find an unusual book project by Swiss photographer Joël Tettamanti, which is the first of a series of publications. This book will be extended in a print-on-demand procedure, and thus continually re-edited. Swiss photo archives also open up unknown worlds of im-ages; the first volume of a new series features numerous pho-tographic treasures from archives in northeastern Switzerland.
See for yourself! Find out more about our current publications on the following pages. We are happy to support any ideas you may have on possible events and activ-ities concerning the publications pre-sented here. Please get in touch with our representatives Giovanni Ravasio and Hans Frieden, or call Kirstin Meditz directly at our office. We look forward to working with you in the future.

• Photographic book by Ulrich Seidl accompanying the launch
of his latest film titled Im Keller (In the Basement)
• A photographic essay on human obsessions that emerge
in the basement
• An unfathomable and humorous topography of the basement
area – both as a scene of horror and favourite playground
• Planned photo exhibitions amongst others in Zurich, Vienna
and BerlinFollowing his large-scale PARADISE trilogy, Ulrich Seidl’s latest film essay Im Keller is due to be released in autumn 2014. It is the director’s return to the documentary film. Im Keller is a nightmare journey through the depths of the Austrian soul: it is about brass band music and opera arias, expensive furniture and sleazy jokes, sexuality and sadism, fitness and fascism, snakes and weapons, love and the yearning for it. This accompanying book intends to draw attention to the specific aesthetics and social dimension of Seidl’s tableaux with the help of film frames and texts. Selected motifs of this tour through the basement of a typical Austrian family home communicate with texts by film critics, philosophers, psychologists, authors and essay writers, shedding light on subterranean secrecy.

Ulrich Seidl, born 1962, is film director, screenwriter and producer. In 2001, his
first film Dog Days won the Silver Lion Jury’s Special Award at the international
Venice Film Festival. Some of his earlier documentaries such as Good News, Animal
Love and Models have also received numerous prizes. His PARADISE trilogy Love,
Faith and Hope, which premiered in Cannes, Venice and Berlin, has lately received
worldwide attention. Seidl works with partly disturbing formal means – long and sta-
tic shots, abrupt editing and distance. He is regarded as a radical filmmaker whose
impressive documentaries set the scene for taboo themes.

• Israel, Greenland, China, Niger, Kuwait and other countries:
travelling with the photographer Joël Tettamanti
• The world as an apparently surreal place – pictures of a
cross-cultural journey
• Exhibitions planned in Switzerland and Germany
• Individually designable special editions available Since his 2009 solo exhibition Local Studies at Fotostiftung Schweiz, Swiss Joël Tettamanti has gradually built up his reputa-tion as a photographer. Assignments for international magazines and global company groups take him to known and unknown places all over the world, which he more or less coincidentally approaches as an artist. In his oeuvre, Tettamanti focuses on places that give each location its specific identity. Moving from unspoiled countryside across the borders between nature and civilisation to the centres of agglomeration, he explores the de-tails where seemingly rationally constructed civilisation encoun-ters natural forms. The places Tettamanti reveals in his pho-tographs seem somehow surreal; they show just how absurd man-made structures can appear.
Worldwide unique photographic book projectWorks 2001 – 2019 also appears as a special edition, reviving the photo book as a medium in times of digitalisation. It is a profes-sionally and conventionally published book combined with print-on-demand production. The artist offers various types of special editions, thus enabling customers to participate in the design process by selecting photos for their own edition.Special editions are available from our publishing company. We are happy to inform you of our procedures and conditions.

• Switzerland’s visual heritage in a new series
• Each of these seven volumes features one region – Volume 1:
Region of Northeastern Switzerland
• First comprehensive publication on the subject of Swiss photo
archives – unknown cultural wealth awaiting discovery
Swiss photo archives house a treasure trove of photographs documenting all aspects of Swiss life over the past decades. Whether depicting industrial settings or rural traditions, crafts-men or bridal couples, the absurd or commonplace – these pic-tures slumbering in the archives represent a significant, yet hith-erto disregarded part of Swiss cultural heritage. This new series of publications now presents them in their national dimension. Initiated by renowned photographic expert Paul Hugger, this se-ries presents a world of images from the past two centuries that are awaiting discovery in Swiss state and communal archives, museums and libraries. These volumes thus arouse awareness for the wealth and abundance of visual evidence from the past. Subdivided into regions, the first volume of the series explores twelve photo archives in the Cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen und Thur-gau in the northeastern region of Switzerland.

• Reporters Without Borders’ annual of press photography
• Participant photographers in recent years: Christoph Bangert, Jan
Grarup, Thomas Kern, Meinrad Schade, Olivier Vogelsang, Zalmaï
• Key topics: North Korea, Ukraine, Russia, Palestine, Haiti
Reporters do very dangerous work in many regions of the world, in places where freedom of speech is restricted or completely banned, where censorship, repression, armed conflict, criminal militias or the Mafia pose a great threat to professional activities of journalists, bloggers and internet dissidents. Just one word or image can result in their death, persecution or long prison sentences. The association of Reporters Without Borders docu-ments global breaches of freedom of information and fights against censorship and restrictive media legislation. This volume of photographs contains impressive background re-ports and portfolios of well-known photographers and journal-ists from Switzerland and other countries. Their stories take us to current hotspots as well as forgotten corners of world events. Photos and texts supplied free of charge open our eyes for the importance of free reporting, showing us both the beauty and mystery of the world, but also condemning violence. Reports for Freedom of Information raises public awareness for the most important concern of reporters without borders, name-ly, the freedom to inform people and get informed all over the world.
By purchasing this book, you help to support Reporters Without Borders and freedom of information.

• Continuation of the series on the national ceramics inventory –
continuation volume of Ceramica CH, Volume 1: Neuchâtel
• Modern ceramics (1500–1950) from the inventory of publicly
available collections
• Preventing threatened cultural heritage from being forgotten
Swiss museums hold vast and immensely invaluable collections of ceramic treasures. These precious objects from national and international manufacturers are not only widely unknown to the general public, but to experts as well – mainly because most of them are no longer on exhibition and have never been published.Based in Basel, the foundation Ceramica-Stiftung has been de-voted to promoting research on ceramics since 1954. In 2009, Ceramica-Stiftung initiated the Ceramica CH project aimed at compiling a national inventory of publicly available collections of modern ceramics (1500–1950). Each volume of this series will be dedicated to one canton; the first volume features the ce-ramic collections of Neuchâtel. The second volume focuses on the ceramic collections of the Canton of Solothurn, cataloguing and analysing collections from Blumenstein Museum in Solo-thurn, the Olten Historical Museum, Thal Ceramics Museum and the Felchlin collection in Matzendorf, Alt-Falkenstein Castle and Wasseramt Museum in Halten.

Thomas Schütte, Rosemarie Trockel, Mark Wallinger and others
• Exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus: May 10 to July 27, 2014
Robert Walser (1878–1956) is considered one of the most im-portant writers of the modern age. His extensive work and life as an outsider have not just fascinated readers and writers all over the world but have increasingly captured the imagination of visual artists. Recent works by Thomas Hirschhorn, Markus Raetz, Thomas Schütte, Rosemarie Trockel, Mark Wallinger and other artists demonstrate Walser’s inspiring force and the great variety of works it has given rise to.Robert Walser was heavily influenced by the art of his age, which reflects the same early 20th-century conflicts between the city and country and between tradition and modernism that are mov-ingly described in his texts. The exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus and the accompanying catalogue bring together historical and contemporary pictorial worlds in a way that yields new perspectives on different aspects of Robert Walser and his work.

• Diaries of the artist Marlies Pekarek from 1991 to the present day
• Individual life story encountering contemporary history, women’s
history and art history
• Collages filled with humour, depth and imagination
Marlies Pekarek’s new book features selected texts from her art diaries that she once began during her studies in Australia and has continued until today. It is based on Australian Woman’s Diaries, an annual calendar with diary sections for personal notes, stories about women in Australia and nostalgic illustra-tions and texts from historical guidebooks for women. Marlies Pekarek has reinterpreted this model and developed it in her own context. She not only includes current global events in her collages con-sisting of press photos and other findings, but general consid-erations as well, such as reflections on symbols of power, differ-ent religions and the position of women. From within the printed frame of the calendar, the artist develops expressive and playful-ly light-hearted illustrations and associative connections. Even if these diaries originally emerged as a kind of artistic by-product of her current work cycles, as independent works, they aptly illustrate key issues in Marlies Pekarek’s creative de-velopment.

• Intimate workshop portrait of an artist in a symbiosis with stone

• Exploring the possibilities of stone as a material, a resonator and
dialogue partner
This book takes us on a sensitive and intimate walk around sculptor Arthur Schneiter’s workshop in a photographic essay by Guido Baselgia. It is a laboratory where the artist has cast life in stone in a self-experiment, living in his work and between his stony trains of thought. In Arthur Schneiter’s sculptural realities, we encounter objects conceived by hand and ear. Sculptures show us apparently free, abstract forms. These works, however, are not conventional forms of art, but rather petrified dialogues between man and material; investigations into a material as a language, instrument, and surface. Gert Gschwendtner’s accompanying essay is a philosophical and associative reflection on various aspects of Schneiter’s work: sculptures, photography and drawings in the sign of the stone.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) published his essay Concerning the Spiritual in Art over 100 years ago, thus creating an art theory that is still signifi cant in 2014. His collected thoughts formed the foundation for the further development of abstract art. In 1926, he published Point and Line to Plane, which is an organic con-tinuation of Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911). It emerged at the time as a compendium of Kandinsky’s Bauhaus concept, ex-ploring the possibilities of drawing beyond its descriptive func-tion. Alongside Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Point and Line to Plane, the collected edition Essays on Art and Artists contains Kandinsky’s other theoretical treatises. In his writings, Kandinsky formulates his groundbreaking theories on the rela-tions between concrete and abstract art. Correspondence be-tween the artist and Herwarth Walden, gallery owner and editor of Der Sturm, gives an insight into Kandinsky’s personality and understanding of art. Art historian Karla Bilang has collected and commented on his letters and writings in: Kandinsky, Münter, Walden – Briefe und Schriften 1912–1914.

• Monograph of the artist Louis Moilliet, companion of Klee and Macke
• The colors of North Africa in watercolors between abstraction
and concreteness
• The Journey to Tunisia – Klee, Macke, Moilliet exhibition, on show
at Zentrum Paul Klee until 22 June 2014
Although one of most significant representatives of Modern-ism, Moilliet has remained comparatively unknown. His name is closely connected with his legendary journey to Tunisia together with Paul Klee and August Macke on the eve of the First World War. It turned out to be a stunning experience for all three art-ists. Moilliet, who already knew the country and travelled there several times afterwards, found in that distant land the light and inspiration that would finally make him a master of watercolors. This book presents a selection of his watercolors; paintings and drawings give additional insight into his entire creative career. Committed to the idea of distance, Moilliet remained a fervent traveller throughout his life. His works have since enriched and inspired the world of art. For the first time in many years, art lovers are now able to rediscover his fascinating oeuvre in this book.
