These words from Martin Luther King Jr, the iconic civil rights activist of the twentieth century, encapsulate an ideal of education that is significant. Semester 1 Reports and Exam Feedback

Students are encouraged to reflect on any strategies suggested for improvement and develop a plan to bridge any gaps in their learning. A well organised plan focussing on improving any areas of weakness should see success. Reports will go live to students and parents at 3.30pm on Friday, June 24. A notification will be sent out via Compass.

Student SafetyAccess to the Administration Car Park is for staff, deliveries and parents with disabled students. Pick up and dropping off students is strictly prohibited in the Administration Car Park for all other purposes. Council parking attendants have been seen at the front of the school with cameras catching parents pulling up in the ‘No Stopping’ zone.

Work ExperienceYear 10 students are on Work Experience this past week. Work Experience is part of the schools’ educational program where students experience the world of work, often for the first time. It is the short-term placement of secondary school students with employers, to provide insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located.

MR ANDREW BATCHELORJUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Year 7, 8 and 9 Exams Last week on Thursday and Friday, students across the Junior School undertook their English and Mathematics examinations. These exams were held in the Year 7 Learning Centre and were a great learning opportunity for our students. It was pleasing to see students extremely focussed and enthusiastic to do their best and show improvements in their learning. We will continue to build our students’ understanding of how best to prepare for exams and how to use their exam results with targeted and specific feedback to improve their learning.

Year 7 People Who Changed the World The Presentation evening was held on Monday 30th May in the Library/Learning Centre and it was wonderful to see so many parents there to view and discuss their child’s achievements. Congratulations to the Year 7 students who have produced some outstanding work and also to their English and Humanities teachers for their efforts in running and supporting this great learning opportunity, overseen by the Head of Junior School, Mr Chris Christofidis, and the Heads of Year 7, Mrs Sue Blackmore and Mrs Deb Cigognini.

Da Vinci Decathlon On Thursday 19th May, sixteen students from 7.4 headed to St Leonards College in Brighton to participate in the Da Vinci Decathlon. This was a very exciting and engaging day, where students participated in 10 events, including English, Art and Poetry, Philosophy, Maths, Science, strategy games, code breaking, and more. They were split into two teams of 8 students, and competed against a range of private and public schools from the surrounding area, with 29 teams in total. Overall each of our teams performed admirably against the other schools.

Year 8 Inquiry Based Learning The Inquiry Based Learning Presentation Night was held on Monday 23rd May at 7.30pm in the Library/Learning Centre. The evening was a great success and it was very enjoyable to see our Year 8 students presenting their work to their parents and teachers. All students made a fantastic effort and enjoyed having feedback from parents. Well done to all students and staff for their efforts over the three week program. Thank you to our Heads of Year 8, Mrs Natalie Cumming and Mr Toby Mahoney, and the Head of Junior School, Mr Chris Christofidis for their work in organising this learning opportunity for our students. We look forward to recommencing our Inquiry Based Learning focus again in Semester 2.

Mrs Sue Blackmore, Head of Year 7PEOPLE WHO CHANGED THE WORLD

People Who Changed the World Presentation night was once again a huge success. Students had worked hard in their English and Humanities classes over two solid weeks and were very excited to present their findings and to dress up as their person on the night. Parents, families and friends are always very impressed by the standard of work that the students bring to the night and are equally impressed when students answer the questions that they have prepared as their person. Many photos were taken on the night and these will be shown at Assembly so that students who weren’t able to get around to the other classes can see how others portrayed their person who changed the world.

Mrs Natalie Cumming, Head of Year 8YEAR 8 IBL

The Year 8s have recently completed their first three week Inquiry Based Learning Project for 2016. The project theme was ‘Change in Australia and Asia’. The four main learning areas (English, Mathematics, Humanities and Science) were integrated into the IBL project. The IBL projects at Year 8 level are designed to encourage students to become independent learners. Learning activities in IBL requires students to perform their own research and apply their findings to complete set projects. Students have the opportunity to work collaboratively, sharing their ideas and taking responsibility for their own work. Classroom teachers supervise and monitor the progress of their students, allowing students more freedom to work in their preferred style and pursue academic areas of interest.

On Monday 23rd May, the students showcased their three weeks of hard work. The standard of work presented on the evening and the creativity demonstrated is a credit to the students. It was lovely to see so many family members taking the opportunity to celebrate in their child’s success.

YEAR 10 DEBUTANTE BALLMrs Dimi Charalambous and Mr John Karydis, Heads of Year 10

This year, thirty-eight of our Year 10 students signed up to participate in the 2016 Debutante Ball. The International of Brighton was the venue where this wonderful event was held on Thursday the 19th May. Our Debutantes put in six weeks of rehearsals, where they worked with Peter and Sherallen from Swish Dance Centre, to put together a number of routines. Students were challenged and they worked collaboratively as a group to rehearse the steps that accompanied each of the catchy tracks chosen. Students were not expected to dance with a partner, instead they all worked together and were encouraged to make new friendships.

As the evening approached, preparations reached fever-pitch, but the efforts were well worth it! Our young men looked dashing in their black dinner suits and our young ladies looked beautiful in their gowns. The attention to detail was impeccable, hair, make-up, dresses and shoes were all chosen with great care and they all looked spectacular on this special night. The Honourable Local Member, Mr Nick Staikos MP, kindly accepted the invitation sent by our Debutantes to attend this very special event. Ms Helene Hiotis and our local Member of Parliament were proud to receive the Debutantes, when they came out to be presented. There are many highlights on an evening such as this one, but one of the most memorable and special moments had to be when each Debutante invited their parents, grandparents or other special family member to join them on the dance floor! The evening included a sumptuous array of canapés and a delicious three course meal. It was wonderful to see the dance floor packed with Debutantes, parents, guests and staff kicking up their heels all night. Many photographs were taken of this special evening, undoubtedly memories were made for a lifetime.

Bentleigh Secondary College 2016 7

On Tuesday 31st May the Accounting students of Bentleigh Secondary College excitedly ventured off to Melbourne Olympic Park to participate in ‘Meet the Business Leader 2016’ for the first time. As Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand's leading secondary school event, no expense was spared and students were given every opportunity to gain invaluable insight into what a successful career in business could look like.

The event started off with lunch in the River Room where students were able to mingle with a number of prominent business leaders. After lunch students listened to multiple presentations by a number of guest speakers regarding the transition from school to university, entry pathways into business, what a successful career in business could look like and topics relevant to ensuring students are work ready. Students were amazed with the opportunities a successful career in business could provide, particularly the opportunity to work overseas.

Shortly after the presentations, students were asked to assemble the most creative, structurally sound and tallest tower they could with a limited amount of arts and crafts materials. There were some very interesting towers created and all students thoroughly enjoyed the activity. However, there was one tower that stood out from the rest and this tower was proudly constructed by a number of students from none other than Bentleigh Secondary College. Congratulations must go to Jeffrey Wu, George Wang, Steven Hu, Ivy Huang, July Cong and Natalie Zhang who took out first place.

The final part of the event involved roundtable networking between the students and business leaders. As the business leaders rotated around the tables, students learnt about their personal business journey, the challenges they have faced, the triumphs they have experienced and much more.

Overall, Meet the Business Leader 2016 was a great success. The students received invaluable insight into what a successful career in business could look like and offer. Bring on Meet the Business Leader 2017!

OUTDOOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIESMr Stuart Pearson, Outdoor and Environmental Studies Teacher

From Wednesday 25th to Friday 27th of May the Unit 3 and 4 Outdoor and Environmental Studies class explored the Mornington Peninsula. Our goal was for students to have practical experiences that could then be linked to OES concepts and used in their examination responses. The adventure started with a peaceful walk around Arthurs Seat before an informative and fascinating historic tour of the Collin’s Historical Site and Sorrento Museum. Unfortunate-ly, strong wind conditions meant the booked snorkeling session could not go ahead, yet the replacement activity of stand-up paddle boarding was thoroughly enjoyed by all. On Day 2 we began with tree surfing that saw students climbing rock walls, jumping from platform to platform and swinging through the trees. We then had a surfing les-son off Point Leo, with students all finding personal success and most standing up (and even turning on the wave).

The final experience on our second day was a tour of the Moonlit Sanctuary. Students got to try traditional Indigenous bush food and learn about their interactions with the land. We also patted dingoes, observed sleepy koalas and angry barking owls and wandered amongst swamp hens and ducks. The highlight was feeding a group of kangaroos and wallabies and holding the resident black-headed python. On our final day, the group arose early and headed to Cape Schanck in the Mornington Peninsula National Park. There we met the local ranger who gave us all the tools and knowledge to clear the track down to the beach. This area has seen many swimmers and fishermen in difficulty and our clearing ensured emergency vehicles can access the beach in the future. The class felt a great sense of satisfaction in contributing to Parks Victoria and the Mornington Peninsula National Park.

Coming up is the Unit 1 and 2 cross-country skiing trip to Lake Mountain!

VCE SUPPORTIVE FRIENDS WORKSHOPMs Helen Arhontis, VCE Supportive Friends Co-ordinator and Mrs Jenny Muir, Nurse Educator

Over the last couple of weeks, Ms Helen Arhontis and Mrs Jenny Muir have conducted three Supportive Friends Workshops. A half-day session, a refresher for already trained Year 12s. This was held on 14th April. There were 2 further workshops for thirty-five Year 11 and Year 12 students who had not been previously trained. Students discussed the stresses of being a senior student and strategies to manage this. They were introduced to basic listening and supporting skills with a strong emphasis to involve an adult when required. They were introduced to a program developed by Headspace, for school communities called Safe Minds, which involved tips for noticing when someone may need support and information about problem solving, managing sleep, eating and exercise. All workshops were very well received with very positive feedback from participants. We will follow this up with ongoing support for these young people with lunchtime meetings and workshops. Many thanks to these inspiring young people who have volunteered to support their peers in the senior years of secondary education.

CAREER NEWSMs Kirstin Conway, Careers and Pathways Co-ordinator

Year 10 Multi-Media and Gaming Industry ExcursionOn Tuesday 24 May a group of Year 10 students, who expressed an interest in a career in the multi-media and gaming industry, attended an excursion to the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE). Students learnt about various careers and opportunities available in the industry, as well as participating in two hands on workshops. Overall, the students were highly engaged and gained great insight about the industry and learnt practical skills related to screen art and programming.

Equal, Safe and StrongStudents in Year 10 will be trained as Peer Educators as part of the Equal, Safe and Strong Project being implemented this term on behalf of the Southern Melbourne Primary Care Partnership. The project aims to promote respectful relationships in schools by providing students with the knowledge to make informed and healthy choices about their relationships and the skills to be able to share this information. Resources and information about support services will also be accessible to individuals experiencing unhealthy relationships.

Staff have participated in a training session and a parent information session about the project will be held (day to be announced) in the near future. All parents are welcome to attend.

Year 12 Tertiary Information SessionOn Tuesday 2 June, Year 12 students attended the Tertiary Information Service session held at Monash University, Clayton Campus. Students learnt about how important it is to now finalise their research in regards to tertiary courses and/or employment options. The application process to VTAC was clearly explained to students, along with how to apply for SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme) and the importance of applying for Scholarships - making sure you are in it to win it! The process of Offers and Change of Preference (COP) was also outlined - emphasising to always accept your first offer and look at pathway options as sometimes the best laid plans do not work out, so having a Plan B is important. Finally, students had another opportunity to speak to tertiary representatives and collect more course guides to help finalise decisions on course preferences.

Ms Jacinta Egan, Head of Performing ArtsPERFORMING ARTS REPORT

It is exciting times in the Performing Arts area at Bentleigh SC as we have just finished a gruelling round of auditions for this year’s Whole School Musical - Seussical.

Seussical tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing “Whos”, including Jojo, a Who child who gets into trouble for thinking too many “thinks”. Horton faces a double challenge - not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Amayzing Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule and danger, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

We would like to congratulate the following 94 students who have been cast in the show:

Bentleigh Secondary College 2016 13

A couple of weeks ago l received some sad news from SEDA regarding our youngest trainee puppy Silky (six months old). A few days earlier, Silky had to visit a heart specialist about a heart murmur she had had since birth. Apparently heart murmurs can occur in about 30% of puppies but have generally gone by the time they are four to five months old. This didn’t happen in Silky’s case. Her problem will mean she will not be able to proceed with training as a Seeing Eye Dog. She will tire easily and not grow as big and strong as the average Labrador. The job would be too strenuous for her. Whilst l (and the students) were upset, disappointed and sad to see Silky leave, we understand that Seeing Eye Dog training is not for every dog.

Only about 50% of puppies actually make it through the program and Silky is the first (out of nine) we have had that hasn’t gone through due to her health issue. However, she will make someone a lovely pet and this is what has happened. A fabulous family has been found and Silky has now gone to live with them as a pet. She may even come for an occasional visit so the students can see how well she is doing. The good news is that Allie is still with us and will soon be going into the training program and the next puppy is a few weeks old and will join us in a few more weeks. Seeing Eye Dogs Australia have sent us a lovely Certificate of Appreciation for all the work the students put into her care and training. The pictures below were taken on Silky’s last day at school.

Our Indigenous Mural was installed last month. For those new to the college, the funding of $2000.00 came from a successful grant application from the Victorian Teachers Mutual Bank in June 2014.

A search for a suitable indigenous artist to work with our students took over a year and work finally began on the piece in Term 3/4 2015. Judy, the artist worked very closely with Ann Brennan and her Year 9 art class to achieve a fantastic piece that tells the story of country.

The mural is installed on the back wall of the Year 8 locker bay overlooking the billabong and has been designed to reflect off the water as users of our M&ICC leave the Centre. Please take the time to pop out and admire the excellent work of our students and Ann. Also, my thanks to Nick Tzovaras for the installation. A smoking ceremony will occur in the near future to celebrate this addition to Bentleigh Secondary College.

SENIOR ULTIMATE FRISBEE TEAM Mr Stuart Pearson, Physical Education Teacher

On Wednesday 8th June the Senior Ultimate Frisbee team headed to Parkville to take on the best competition in the state. On the day, teams came from as far as Geelong and Ballarat to participate in the event that included over fifteen Victorian schools. The team performed admirably all day, comfortably winning five games and showing excellent sportsmanship and school spirit. While all students played well, Alastair Schache’s excellent defence and frisbee skills saw him voted onto the Team of Merit for the best performers of the competition. The group is looking forward to another chance to test their skills against the the best Ultimate Frisbee players in the state later in the year.

NETFIT NETBALLOn the 24th May about thirty Year 7-9 students chose to participate in a Netfit Netball session. Netfit Netball aims to encourage girls and boys to stay fit whilst playing in their regular netball team. The event that Bentleigh chose to participate in what was a forty-five minute netball fitness class hosted by Chloe Watson from the Melbourne Vixens and Carly Rodger a past elite sprinter.

Some activities we participated in were practicing our ball co-ordination skills with a partner where we did various types of passing and then sprinting. We also used resistance bands around our legs and ankles to build and strengthen our muscles.

Alongside the students, Miss Rosenbrock, Ms Hudson and Ms Schout also participated. We owe a big thanks to Miss Rosenbrock for organising the event, we all enjoyed it very much and hopefully Bentleigh can take part in another event like this again!
