    BENTONE 1000Rheological Additive

BENTONE 1000 rheological additive, is a new highefficiency organoclay for low to intermediate polarityorganic liquids and solvents. This new rheologicaladditive is designed for use in the dispersion phaseof paint making without the use of a chemicalactivator. With greater efficiency and better reproducibility, BENTONE 1000 gives the paintmanufacturer added time, energy and raw materialcost savings.

    Advantages

    Easy to use

    Highly efficient development of rheologicaladditive

    Very consistent rheological properties

    Eliminates pregels

Eliminates need for chemical activators inconventional solvent systems

    Typical PropertiesComposition Tetra Alkyl

    Ammonium BENTONITE

    Color Very light cream

    Form Finely divided powder

Particle Size (dispersed) Less than 1 micron

    Density (gm/cm 3) 1.70(lbs./U.S. gallon) 14.2

    Apparent Density 4.95(uncompacted) (lbs./ft. 3)

    Applications

BENTONE 1000 additive is an efficient replacementfor organoclay additives in coatings containingaliphatic solvents (mineral spirits, VM&P naphtha, etc.) trade sales paints, varnishes, light industrialfinishes, traffic paints, industrial maintenance paintsand marine coatings.

IncorporationBENTONE 1000 additive increases rheologicalperformance using typical incorporation proceduresduring the manufacturing process. This rheologicaladditive should be incorporated in the dispersionphase under high shear. A pigmented cowlesdispersion is sufficient. A polar additive is notrequired.

As with conventional organoclays, BENTONE 1000additive does not disperse efficiently in cold

systems. The best performance conditions areachieved when dispersion takes place at or above24

    C (75

    F) in the pigment grind. BENTONE 1000it is not sensitive to high temperatures.

There is generally no need to pregel BENTONE1000 additive. However, if desired, BENTONE 1000can be used as pregel/slurry activated with water.

    Example: Mineral Spirits 87BENTONE 1000 10Water 3

Full efficiency will be obtained when the pregel isadded to the dispersion phase.

    Recommended Levels ofBENTONE 1000 Additive

Use levels are typically 0.2-2.0% by weight of thesystem, with the level dependent upon the degreeof thickening, control of sag and pigment settlingdesired. When evaluating BENTONE 1000 additiveas a replacement for conventional organoclays nowused in the 0.2-2.0% range, a good starting point isequal weight replacement. After determining initialperformance, the proper adjustment in loading levelcan be made.

When replacing easy dispersion organoclays whichare being used at a level above 1.0% by weight, alower level of BENTONE 1000 additive is generallyrequired to match rheological properties.
