Our goal at Bang & Olufsen is for technol-

Walk into the unassuming elevator of this

1920s skyscraper in New York’s Financial

District and – if you’re jangling the keys

to one particularly special penthouse in

your hand – you’ll exit into another world.

The spectacular four-level apartment at

the building’s pinnacle is known as The

Skyhouse. Its huge semi-circular win-

dows that drink in views of Manhattan

on all four sides make miniatures of the

multi-storey megaliths below. But even

bright lights and precipitous sights can’t

compare with the impact of this apart-

ment’s interior, which really takes your

breath away.

The space is a lofty, white geometric

puzzle with glossy open staircases, walls,

mezzanines and floors cut through with

massive panes of reinforced glass. This

transparent trickery can surprise you

at any minute, revealing an unexpected

view of the sitting room three floors

down, or a confusing sight of another

stairwell a storey above.

chance when decorating this four-storey penthouse apartment.

Architect David Hotson says, “It takes a

special, visionary client to commission a

project like this. It was hugely ambitious

from the outset but the couple were really

excited by the potential, and we just ran

with their brief to create beautiful, precise,

minimalistic spaces enriched with geome-

try, drama and surprise.”

If glass floors weren’t dramatic or surpris-

ing enough, there is a giant, polished steel

tubular slide that slaloms through bedroom

walls to eject riders through a huge silver

yawn into the entrance hall and dining

area. It’s certainly a sure-fire-impressive

party entrance, or a novel way for guests

to arrive for breakfast.

“What I think works most brilliantly about

The Skyhouse,” says Hotson, “is the tension

between this serious architectural concept

and the playful impact of the slide, the

swing, the art collection and the colourful,

whimsical interior scheme. It’s like a stimu-

lating conversation between two very dif-

ferent design perspectives, which makes it

really exciting.”

These visionary owners who clearly love

excitement chose Bang  &  Olufsen  televi-

sions for each of the guest bedrooms, a

motorised- turning BeoVision 11 for the wall

facing the kitchen and a set of BeoLab 5

loudspeakers with a classic BeoSound 9000

CD player for the open-plan living room that

radiates around it. The pièce de résistance,

however, is surely the huge 103” BeoVision

4 television in the cinema room. “The great

thing about the BeoVision 4,” the owners

explain, “is watching cheesy movies like

Captain America with room-rattling bass.

But it is also perfect for watching Paolo

Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty with its

subtle sound and perfect image.”

“We’re obsessive about all aspects of our

environment,” they continue, “especially sonic

and visual. Not only is Bang & Olufsen at the

forefront of sound and image reproduction,

its attention to detail in the physical con-

struction of the products means that it’s

the only kind of audio-visual equipment we

could imagine putting in this apartment.

Bang & Olufsen equipment isn’t cheap, but

once you’ve built a high-end apartment in

New York city you realise how beautifully

designed and constructed these products

are, so they’re actually a great deal! They

make us happy every time we see and

use them.”

Wherever the Tse family roamed, travelling

the globe as expats, their Bang & Olufsen

kit went with them. Now they have cus-

tom-built their dream home and it is time

for a more permanent installation.

“I bought our BeoSound 9000 in 1996

with my very first bonus cheque and it

still works perfectly. It was our first piece

of Bang & Olufsen equipment and our

first Christmas in Singapore,” Henry Tse

tells us with characteristic enthusiasm,

gesturing towards the snug TV room

of his new house in Hertfordshire, UK,

where the nearly 20-year-old CD player

is mounted on the wall.

“We’ve always liked to use smart systems

to make our homes more liveable, but this

house is the ultimate expression of that

and it’s been a long time coming,” Henry

says, as we walk through into the heart of

the house: the open-plan kitchen/living/

dining room, with long shards of strong

spring sunlight streaking the smoked oak

floorboards.

Working to a brief to build a home that was

“high-tech, high-performance and simple to

use”, the London-based designers provided

the family with a ’future proof’ building

installed with buckets of smart functional-

ity. An advanced CAT7 data network pro-

vides self-regulating controls for the heat-

ing system and humidity levels, fine-tuned

by way of an iPad application. This smart

network complements the Bang & Olufsen

AV installation, which was handled by local

dealers in Watford and is also controlled

via the BeoLink App. Yes, the house is arti-

ficially intelligent, but it’s far too warm and

domesticated to feel robot-like.

For over 15 years the Tse family lived abroad –

in Australia, Singapore and Japan – following

Henry’s busy career. Along the way, two

sons were born, Will and Matt, now both

in their teens, and they bought their two

dogs, Mia and Poppy. Three years ago

they decided to move back to England

and build a house exactly as they wanted

it. As Henry shows me, with their BeoSound

9000 still in the TV room and BeoVision

7 in the guest room, they’ve long been

devoted customers of Bang & Olufsen. “We

have continued to buy Bang & Olufsen AV

because of the incredible quality. We’ve

had TVs that last so well that we’ve taken

them with us to numerous rented houses,

across continents. We once installed an

alternative brand in a holiday home and

regretted it. The sound wasn’t a patch on

Bang & Olufsen and the ease of use did not

compare. Now we’ve settled, we have been

able to get the integrated system we’ve

wanted for almost as long as this house!”

It’s in the open-plan kitchen/living space

that they’ve focused their contemporary

Bang  &  Olufsen sound system, which

includes a pair of BeoLab 18 loudspeakers

decorating the storage wall, and the sub-

woofer, BeoLab 19, tucked neatly into the

wall of the dining area. Together, he says,

“They fill the whole room with amazing

sound.” Taking pride of place is the 55-inch

BeoVision 11, the largest screen in the

house, which rotates on its wall mount to

face the sofa or the kitchen worktop. It’s

a communal space that feels buzzy, warm

and designed for easy living.

Every bedroom has a BeoPlay V1 television,

but each member of the family uses his

or her Bang & Olufsen differently, it turns

out. “I’m more of a video-nut,” says Henry,

“while Chris is passionate about music. I’ll

watch a film or some sport as I’m cooking in

the kitchen, while Chris listens to music on

her Beolit 12 and paints in her studio. Matt

will be playing video games on his V1 while

his brother is listening to music on iTunes or

Spotify through the loudspeakers in his TV.”

Moment are set up as an integrated system, meaning you can control the television in the children’s room if you need to

switch it off when dinner is on the table.

Working from home is a natural part of balancing modern life, a chance to be close to the family while finishing the day’s

work. Music can be enjoyed from BeoLab 18, and in this case controlled via the BeoSound Essence remote which gives the

Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen founded

Bang & Olufsen in 1925, as two young engi-

neers in the small town of Struer, in the

northwestern part of Denmark.

Ever since then, we have been working on

creating synergy between design, sound

and engineering, meanwhile creating an

internationally recognised quality brand.
