There is something about Ivan that makes him different from the other six year olds in his class, and they tease him for it. Ivan is

able to explain his uniqueness to us: inside, he believes he is a crocodile.

When we accept the invitation to enter Ivan’s crocodile world, we can expect to be thoroughly engaged, but we can also expect

to be emotionally challenged.

What we cannot expect is a straightforward moral to this story, whereby diffi cult

situations are simply resolved.

In telling us his story, Ivan leaves us with much to think and talk about.

The Prince of PeasBy Sylvia Chausse and illustrated by Anne Letuffe

ISBN 97809806 71100

Synopsis

This illustrated children’s book is a play on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale ‘The Princess and the Pea’. The story centres on Princess Antoinette’s quest to marry. Her journey for romance starts in the centre of France where she meets several suitors. However, each potential husband must pass her mother’s “pea test”, whereby Queen Louise hides a pea under their mattress in an attempt to identify the true Prince of Peas. Will Queen Louise help Princess Antoinette find her true Prince of Peas?

The Age“Forget the standard Three Little Pigs version, this is much more entertaining as each tiny porker goes wee wee wee all over the French countryside in search of their not-so-small smalls. Told in rhyming verse, the language is playful and inventive while Anne Letuffe’s collage paint and fabric illustrations add a rich second layer to the story. A delightful read for twos and up”.

The Age – M Magazine “A superb twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea, this has a royal rabbit looking for her prince. But just when she dares to hope for true happiness, her potential prince fails the pea test. As clever as the rhyming story is, it’s the stunning collage illustrations that make this book special”.
