JoKE

A JuDGE’S DILEMMA, CAN You HELP?

In a small town, a person decided to open up a brothel, which was right opposite to a church. The church and its congregation started a campaign to block the brothel from opening with petitions and prayed daily against his business.

Work progressed. However, when it was almost complete and was about to open a few days later, a strong lightning struck the brothel and it was burnt to the ground.

The church folks were rather smug in their outlook after that, till the brothel owner sued the church authorities on the grounds that the church through its congregation and prayers was ultimately responsible for the destruction of his brothel, either through direct or indirect actions or means.

In its reply to the court, the church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection that their prayers were reasons for the act of God. As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork at the hearing and commented:

‘I don’t know how I’m going to decide this case, but it appears from the paperwork, we have a brothel owner who believes in the power of prayer and we have an entire church that doesn’t.’

Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

A moment of reflection

As Rotary year 2010/2011 journeys into its 3rd quarter, we have planned for club projects to slow down, necessarily to make way for Rotary year 2011/2012’s preparation activities,

and for our Directors to prepare their reports for District Awards submission.

I took a moment to reflect upon happenings over the past months and my heart immediately welled up with so much appreciation for the

kindness, helpfulness and encouragements I received from Pudu Rotarians and their families. While I gave time and effort to serve our club and community, I gained much more in fulfillment and experience.

As the sitting president, I occupied the unique vantage point to study the dynamics and teamwork amongst Pudu Rotarians. It is amazing that with such diversity in professions and background, I observed an admirable level of acceptance and tolerance between members. I believe this is the greatest strength/value of Pudu Rotary Club. It is exactly this strength that has enabled our club to carry out many successful projects in Rotary Year 2010/2011, and the highlight was most definitely the successful organization of the 76th District Conference.

I fully agree with what Paul Harris wrote: “Friendship was the foundation rock on which Rotary was built and tolerance is the element which holds it together. There is enough atomic energy in every Rotary club to blow it into a thousand bits were it not for the spirit of tolerance”.

PE Steven Oon’s New Generations committee is now well into their final preparation phase for the upcoming Interact Leadership Training and Motivational Camp. I was happy to observe the same familiar kind of dynamics and teamwork amongst the committee members.

Dear Pudu Rotarians, let us capitalize on our strength, give our utmost support and look forward to more successful projects in the coming Rotary year.

In Rotary Service,President RY 2010/2011

The Interact Leadership Training and Motivational Camp is scheduled for 11 – 13 March. This signals the first official function for the incoming President, and by then perhaps the first real sigh of relief for the incumbent. Not to say that it has been a drag for the President, but the position comes with lots of responsibility and demand on one’s time. Its only natural to think about handing over of the baton of responsibility and the cycle will be go on with another new president, another new chapter, another new direction and a different style of leadership.

The Pre PETs 2 President-Elect Training Seminar for Rotary Year 2011 – 2012 will be held from 19 – 20 Febuary 2011. This is a compulsory training programme for all Presidents – Elect and is an important training session. The Rotary wheel never stops turning and next year’s presidents are encouraged to Reach Within To Embrace Humanity. The recent International Assembly at San Diego in similar vein encourages all Governors- Elect to think of ways to innovate their Districts in the best manner possible that best suit their districts as Rotary International recognizes the diversity in each district. Perhaps the slogan could be “Bigger, better, bolder and more innovative”.

Our incoming President has had a couple of brain storming sessions and no doubt the usual problems are being discussed, ideas put forward. The President-Elect and his team will soon have to come up with their detailed program for the club for year 2011 -2012.

Pudu as a club will as usual support each incoming President and this is one of the great strength of this club, to put the interest of the club above everything else.

One of the subject will definitely be the health and growth of our club for we need new blood even as we plan our projects and programmes. The club will induct its second member this week. Its vital to at the same time think of welcoming out new member so that he can be absorbed into the club and be enthused by our club projects and vision. Let us make him feel at home as soon as possible. Often membership retention can be just as important as membership recruitment. The incoming BOD will need new members for their planned projects even as they continue to depend on the existing core of dedicated Pudu Rotarians.

Acting Sgt-at-Arms Rtn Mok Sin called the meeting at 1:10 pm and proceeded to introduce the visiting Rotarians and Guests. He then led in the singing of the National Anthem and proposed the loyal toast.

Finemaster was PP Albert Lim who first of all welcomed back President Choy Ying from her trip “downunder” with a fine of a modest RM5. PP Dato Jasani was also welcomed back from Bombay and he too had to pay RM5. As it was CNY all Chinese Rotarians had to pay a happy ringgit. Those who were outside the meeting room e.g. VP Heng, were asked to pay RM1 each. Rtn Patrick Lee, PP YK Chew and PDG Dr Paul Lee were each fined RM2 for “talking too much” and undermined him as finemaster. Those without nametags like PP Quah, Sec Lawrance, PP Phang had to pay RM2 each. Rtn Tenny was fined for wearing bright red to reflect the CNY occasion. PP Robin was sitting alone and attracted a ringgit fine from Albert. PP Sam was a happy and lucky man as disclosed to Albert by the man himself and he willingly parted with RM1 fine. Those going to Hatyai for the launching of the “hut” project were each asked to pay RM1. PP KH Low also had a good new year with a lot of rest and spent relatively little money contributed to the fine too. PP Sam who paid RM10 to have a birthday song sung for him.

Club Proceedings Recorded by PP Phang Poke Shum

“I began receiving worried phone calls from Egyptian and foreign friends from all over the city,” she says. “They heard reports of roving gangs armed with guns who were specifically targeting our neighborhood. Seeing as my roommate and I lived on the ground floor, our friends, including Rotaractors I met, began to devise a plan to get us out of our apartment and into a safer area.”

Using a landline phone, Gajewski was able to reach her mother, Janet, who contacted RITS. Within 24 hours, RITS secured transportation to the airport, as well as a plane ticket to Kuwait. It also obtained flights out of the country for four other Rotary Scholars.

“It was pretty scary not having reliable communication with anyone. Since the Internet was shut down, all I brought to the airport was a slip of paper with my ticket number written on it,” says Gajewski.

“Within a few hours, I was in Kuwait and continued on to Germany, Belgium, and finally France. I’m very lucky Rotary was there to pull me out.”

Gajewski says the Egyptian Rotarians and Rotaractors she met became close friends. “They were involved in every facet of my life,” she says. “I never went a day without a phone call, an e-mail, or a personal visit from someone. It really was comforting to know they were there when things got bad.”

She says Rotary has a strong presence in Egypt, and Rotarians are already making efforts to help in affected areas. Club members are also handing out food to families in need.

Gajewski acknowledges that it’s unlikely she’ll be able to return to Egypt. She is scheduled to finish her scholarship at the University of Granada in Spain.

“I wish I could have said goodbye to my friends the way I would have liked,” she says. “I worry about their safety. I hope all Egyptians can achieve their goals peacefully and return the country to stability.”

Happy Valentine’s Day!

PP Sim Bee introduced the 2 speakers Ms Avis Ng Weng Suan and Dr Edward Chan who were to speak on the topic “Healthy Couple Communication”. Ms Avis has a B.Sc. in Psychology from the Bemidji State University USA and is a certified Firo-B Administrator. She also has a Certificate in Brain-Base therapy from the British Psychological Society, UK and a Certification in Virginia Satir systemic Therapy. She is a chartered member of the Malaysian Psychotherapy Association. She has various work experience in the educational aspects of therapy work and has conducted many lessons for young adult group. She has also presented various papers at conferences e.g. the 2011 Asian Pacific International Counseling Conference, Hong Kong.

Dr Edward Chan is a certified member of the National Board of Professional and Ethical Standards Hypnosis

Education and Certification and an Accredited Trainer and Administrator of MBTI psychometric instrument. He is currently the principal consultant psychologist of the Malaysian Psychology Centre (since 1996) and has conducted psychological assessment, psychotherapy and counseling for individuals, families, couples, children and corporate personnel in Malaysia and in the UK. His degree in psychology is from Middlesex University UK.

Ms Avis started the talk by stating that people communicate with each other everyday, be it healthy or disruptive. It is essential that people know the proper technique to communicate as otherwise it can be a source of conflict. In a troubled relationship between couples, the consequence is separation or divorce. However, according to her, things need not end in this manner especially if they were schooled in the various techniques of communication. Thus she asked “What is healthy communication?” and Dr Edward and her staged a dialogue between a couple to illustrate this. The first part of the dialogue dealt with a negative situation and after explaining the pitfalls of the conversation, Dr Edward gave the remedial dialogue.

In explaining the various methods of conversation, he mentioned that one was “Listening by Mirroring”. In this method, there are various elements and they are:

1. Give room to your partner to express

2. Listener repeat back without comment

3. Ask whether you got it right

4. Ask whether there is anything else about the matter.

Besides “listening by validating”, one must also utilize the “listening by empathizing” method. These methods make the individuals feel better and divert a possible explosive situation. If these methods were perfected the individuals would feel motivated and appreciated.

In a way the talk and sketches demonstrate the importance of showing respect with our communication in a manner that will not arouse hostility, but rather it will lead to a better healthier communication between partners. It is best to be non-judgmental in ones approach.

Thanking the speaker was PP Sam who presented them with a certificate of appreciation and a memento.

RI Travel Service Helps Scholars Flee Egyptian unrest

Rotary International Travel Service (RITS) stepped in to help Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar Jamie Gajewski and four other scholars to leave Egypt when civil unrest made it unsafe for them to complete their scholarships there.

Gajewski, from Madison, Wisconsin, USA, was studying Arabic at Alexandria University. Rotarians and Rotaractors in Egypt took good care of her from the minute she arrived in the country five months ago until her safe departure. After widespread street demonstrations erupted on 25 January, her previously

safe neighborhood in Alexandria was overrun by military tanks and demonstrators.

“My neighborhood is a labyrinth of dark, narrow streets, and in front of every building there were bands of men and young boys armed with wooden planks, metal rods, knives, and guns, working together to protect their businesses and families from looters,” says Gajewski.

“Overnight, this safe neighborhood became unstable and dangerous.”

Gajewski says that when foreigners were urged to leave the country, Internet and cell phone interruptions made it difficult to get information about evacuations.

To mark Rotary’s 106th anniversary

Rotary International will join Sanofi Pasteur, a leading provider of polio vaccine, in ringing the opening bell in four financial markets in Europe on 23 February, in honor of Rotary’s 106th anniversary and in support of a polio-free world.

RI President Ray Klinginsmith will also ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange in New York City.

Representatives of the two organizations will take part in openings in Lisbon, Portugal; Amsterdam; Brussels, Belgium; and Paris. The stock exchange ceremonies represent the first time the bell will be rung for a single cause in all five markets.

As the largest company in the world devoted entirely to human vaccines, Sanofi Pasteur has played a major role in the effort to push polio to the brink of eradication.

Sanofi has contributed millions of doses of the oral polio vaccine to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, of which Rotary is a spearheading partner, along with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF. Since 1988, the company has donated 120 million doses of oral polio vaccine for the immunization of children in war-ravaged Angola, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Southern Sudan.

Landmarks lit up

Throughout the week of 23 February, Rotary clubs and districts will also be illuminating iconic landmarks around the world with the End Polio Now message to raise awareness of Rotary’s pledge to rid the world of the crippling disease.

The landmarks include the Trevi Fountain in Rome; the parliament building in The Hague; the soccer stadium in Cape Town, South Africa; a gate at the Lantern Festival in Taiwan; Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, Japan; the government building in Karachi, Pakistan; the planetarium in Seoul, Korea; the Globe of the Mall of Asia in the Philippines; and the Charminar in Hyderabad, India.

Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland sold and planted 4.6 million crocus bulbs across the region in October so their purple blooms would flower around Rotary’s birthday. The Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse, Hertfordshire, England, earned a Guinness World Record for the most people (636) simultaneously planting flower bulbs during an event at Butt’s Close Park in Hitchin.

Honor Rotary’s anniversary by planning an event in your community.

“NEWS FLASH”

SAM Reveals his Secret for a Harmonious Relationship With Ann SuIT YoNG

When thanking the speakers last Monday who spoke on the subject of Healthy Couple Communication PP Sam revealed his own recipe for his harmonious relationship with Ann Suit Yong.

His non confrontational style, his way of showing empathy, is a simple reply of “YES DEAR” whenever his self-esteem is questioned.

Imagine this scenario:

Suit Yong: “ You have been playing majong again!”Sam: “Yes, dear”

Suit Yong: “ Is this so important to you”Sam: “Yes, dear”

Suit Yong: “Am I not important to you”Sam: “Yes, dear….I mean you are the most important thing in my life”

Suit Yong: “ Then promise me that you will not play majong again”Sam: “ Yes, dear…..not today, Rosemarie said she wants a game tomorrow “

Caveat:

This approach only works if you are a Hainanese man as they are charmers.

For others please consult Dr.Edward or Ms.Avis Ng from the Malaysian Psychology Centre. Try not to ask Robin Tay for such matters, nor Sim Bee as he can be confusing. Paul Lee may not be too sympathetic.

According to our learned Dato PY Choong this simple “Yes, Dear” is very neutral, non committal and gives room for negotiation, and gives one time to think of a way out of any tricky situation.

Gary’s CNY open House

PP Gary Lim held his Chinese New Year Open House as usual on the first day of the CNY on 3rd Febuary. Pictures feature some of the Pudu Rotarians who attended.

Make a date to attend next CNY if you miss this one for our gregarious Rotarian Gary is sure to welcome you with plenty of food and drinks.
