Sustainability has become a buzzword in recent years. At Sunway, however, we have been taking conscientious steps to do our part in protecting and preserving our planet since we first developed our Sunway City township, long before the current focus on sustainable development.

Sixteen years ago, the world adopted the Millennium Development Goals or MDGs to deliver by 2015 a more inclusive and accessible world. The MDGs were further distilled into the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on 25 September 2015, where 193 countries of the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 17 goals range from addressing climate change to making education accessible, from ending poverty to enhancing gender equality ― just to highlight a few.

My views on sustainability were shaped by my formative years growing up in the small town of Pusing in Perak. I witnessed first-hand the impact of poverty on families and how it closed off avenues for advancement for the children, particularly in education. And as Pusing was a tin-mining town, you could not help but notice the ugly scars in the landscape created by disused mining pools.

Poverty and environmental degradation were personal experiences that formed my

convictions that education was the path out of poverty, and that we needed to heal a bleeding Mother Earth. Without recognising it, I had adopted the idea of sustainable development.

As soon as I was able to, I established the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to provide scholarships for deserving children as I believe that education can end the cycle of poverty and increase awareness to protect our world. The Foundation has thus far disbursed RM270 million in financial aid to students. My goal is to provide RM1 billion in scholarships in my lifetime.

Furthermore, the memory of those disused mining pools directed my efforts in the development of Sunway City - a thriving community of 300,000 living, working, studying and playing in a township developed on what used to be barren mining land.

More than 25,000 trees have been transplanted here, and a complete eco-system restored. Today, you can find more than 150 species of flora and fauna within the township. We continue to do more by treating the water in our lakes which effectively lifts about 15,000 households off the public water-supply grid. We are also building a combined generation plant for Sunway City, which will use natural gas to generate electricity to further reduce our carbon footprint. We also plan to integrate technology

even more deeply to establish Sunway as a true “smart city” of the 21st century.

The realisation of the SDGs requires the commitment of all sectors of society. Hence, in April, last year, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation pledged a gift of USD10 million, the largest financial commitment to date focused on the education and implementation of the SDGs, to fund the establishment of the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development at Sunway University.

The Center, the only one of its kind in Asia, will provide closer academic and industry linkage, leading to new research opportunities and more possibilities of developing sustainability-focused innovations.

Given Sunway’s leadership role in the sustainable development landscape, I would like to urge all our stakeholders to exemplify the principles of sustainability in your day-to-day lives, whether at work or home. Strengthening

Sunway’s status as a champion of sustainability begins with its people, and as a diversified conglomerate, we can create a deep and lasting impact in promoting sustainability through our various initiatives.

It is my hope that setting up the Jeffrey Sachs Center at Sunway University will help establish Malaysia as a leader in driving the sustainability agenda for the region and, indeed, the world. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are undoubtedly ambitious. But I am convinced that they can be achieved if all of us work together with passion, commitment and determination. We are all in this together!

HAPPENINGS

SMK St Mary of Kuala Lumpur recently launched a Hospitality and Culinary Arts Centre for their secondary school students, naming it after the late Tan Sri Saleha Mohd Ali, an alumnus of the school and a strong advocate of welfare and charity in the country.

The Centre, a first of its kind to be housed within a Malaysian government school, is equipped with a kitchen, patisserie, hospitality suite, indoor dining hall and al-fresco dining space.

In conjunction with the launch, Sunway Group adopted SMK St Mary and contributed RM500,000 to the design and construction of the centre’s cafeteria, reception

and suite; as well as cooking appliances and a Liquefied Petroleum Gas connection to the kitchen.

Besides imparting practical life skills, the centre hopes to provide a well-rounded education to students and an alternative to traditional academic subjects.

Other schools adopted by Sunway include SK Bandar Sunway; SMK Bandar Sunway; SJK(C) Chee Wen, Subang; SK Convent Klang; SJK(C) Gunung Hijau, Pusing, in Perak; and SMJK(C) Yuk Choy in Perak.

By 2030, the 193 United Nation Member States hope to end poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change via the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted at the Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.

The SDGs, which are part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, furthers the previous eight Millennium Development Goals that were adopted in 2000 aimed at addressing poverty, hunger, disease, gender inequality, as well as access to water and sanitation.

The launch of the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development on 9 December 2016 aims to advance the SDGs among Southeast Asian nations by promoting collaboration and linkages between leading

universities and think tanks both globally and in Malaysia.

As a regional hub for research and policy practice, the Centre will curate the world’s best curriculum, academic and executive programmes in the area of sustainable development, thus equipping students, practitioners and policymakers globally to successfully implement the SDGs in the decade to come.

The launch comes after the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation made a US$10 million (RM44.6 million) contribution to establish the Centre in April 2016.

Professor Jeffrey Sachs, the Centre’s Chairman and Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, said the launch

of the Center will help further the development of the global community towards SDGs as Asia is the epicentre for development.

In conjunction with the launch, five keynote speakers shared their views on different areas of sustainable development.

Overcoming Cancer

IMPROVED CANCER TECHNOLOGY

Sunway Medical Centre patient goes the distance in her fight against the deadly disease

12 | BERITA SUNWAY | JAN―APR 2017

From her cheerful disposition and bright smile, one would not have guessed that Yip Swee Fong is currently battling breast cancer, if not for the blue headscarf that conceals her hair loss - an adverse side-effect of chemotherapy treatment. The petite 45-year-old clerk from Johor was optimistic when sharing her personal account with breast cancer. She discovered it in March 2016, when she felt a lump in her left breast during a breast self-examination. When an ultrasound scan at a nearby clinic detected an 80% chance of a cancerous growth, Yip opted for a biopsy test on the same day.

A week later, the test results confirmed her worst fears – she was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer.

To make matters worse, Yip’s husband not only suffered from diabetes but was also recuperating from a stroke, and was on kidney dialysis treatment when she was diagnosed with cancer. Later in April, Yip went under the knife to remove the tumour, before commencing six cycles of chemotherapy treatment a month later at a private clinic in Johor.

Yip Swee Fong

I’m just thankful to God

for discovering the lump, as I had never

done a breast-self examination prior

to that

Upon completing her chemotherapy regimen, Yip’s oncologist advised her to seek radiotherapy treatment at Sunway Medical Centre’s new Cancer and Radiosurgery Centre, which began offering image-guided radiotherapy treatment only in September 2016.

Sunway Medical Centre is the first hospital in Malaysia to have TrueBeam STx system technology, which enables motion-based adaptive radiotherapy for cancer cases.

“My oncologist explained that this new radiotherapy machine at Sunway Medical Centre would be more targeted in its treatment, as it adjusts the dosage of radiation to the changing tumour size,” Yip explained.

In October, Yip travelled to Bandar Sunway and stayed there to undergo radiotherapy sessions for a total of 15 sessions.

Each radiotherapy session takes about 30 minutes, she explained.

“There is no pain during the treatment, just minor side-effects such as heartburn, gastric, feeling ‘heaty’ and poor appetite. Radiotherapy treatment has less side-effects than chemotherapy,” she said.

She was very happy with her experience at the Cancer and Radiosurgery Centre at Sunway Medical Centre, saying that the doctors and nurses were very experienced and friendly. “They treated me like family rather than just their customer,” she said.

Having completed her radiotherapy treatment, she looked forward to heading back home to Johor, where she will resume regular check-ups with her oncologist every six months.

Counting her blessings, Yip said she was grateful for her employer for offering her paid leave for seven months, as they understood her family’s dire financial and health situation at home.

When diagnosed with cancer, one also has to accept the diagnosis and instead of being in denial, choose to be positive in battling the disease, she added.

VOICES

Sunway University and Sunway Medical Centre have recently signed an agreement with the Harvard Medical School Office of Global Education to develop the Southeast Asia Leadership (HMS-SEAL) Programme, a world-class training programme for healthcare leaders and working professionals in the Asia-Pacific region.

Sunway University and Sunway Medical Centre have also jointly committed RM1million in scholarships to selected, qualified healthcare professionals out of the 100-participant intake per year.

The curriculum covers topics such as leading and managing in complex organisations, capital budgeting, leveraging executive decision-making tools to assess healthcare plans, and how to foster creativity.

The programme aims to equip managers and clinicians working in the healthcare industry, and propel Sunway to becoming a regional healthcare hub and centre of excellence.

Around half of the estimated 3.3 million Malaysians who live with diabetes do not realise that they suffer from the disease, according to the International Diabetes Federation.

Recognising that early diagnosis and awareness is critical in effective prevention and control of diabetes and its complications, Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) launched its ‘Let’s Take 5’ diabetes campaign in 2012.

Throughout the course of the campaign, SunMed worked with the Ministry of Health, local city councils, shopping malls, pharmaceutical companies, and non- profit organisations such as the National Kidney Foundation and Limbs for Life Prostheses Centre to promote a healthier lifestyle among Malaysians.

The final leg of the campaign, themed ‘Walk the Talk’, recently concluded on World Diabetes Day 2016 with a consumer carnival.

Each year, the campaign focused on one of the five diabetes complication areas – the brain, eyes, heart, kidney and foot – and tailored a series of activities to promote awareness on diabetes.

The ‘Walk The Talk’ campaign focused on the foot, with SunMed organising initiatives such as the Fit2Run 2016 fitness programme and ‘Malaysians Unite Against Diabetes Run 2016’ charity race in aid of ‘Limbs for Life’, a Prostheses Centre that provides prosthetic limbs to underprivileged Malaysians.

Over forty years ago, it would have been unthinkable to imagine a barren former mining site as a thriving, bustling township, but not Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, who saw the potential in the wasteland being transformed into a sustainable, integrated city.

Today, Sunway City (formerly known as Sunway Resort City) is an award-winning integrated township, comprising 10,000 residential and commercial units, and 7 million sq ft of world-class facilities.

Spanning across 800 acres, Sunway City consists of residential, education, commercial, leisure, hospitality, retail and healthcare components, with a total gross development value of RM12 billion.

Sunway City – recognised with MSC Malaysia Cybercentre status – is Malaysia’s first green township, as endorsed by the Green Building Index certification with a Silver Rating.
