FREE After School Achievers | GRADES 6-8

Middle school students will receive academic support from Cal Berkeley Students and lead-ership develop-ment, along with enrichment activi-ties and life skills training. Students will have access to our computer lab, participate in art, music, spoken-word and cooking. Participants will also learn job skills and civic engagement through youth initiated community service projects. Open to all Berkeley Middle School students. Participants may have an opportunity to receive a stipend for FULL participation. Mandatory parent and youth orientation on Wednesday, Sept. 11th at 6pm at MLK Jr. Youth Services Ctr/YAP and refreshments will be provided. FREE SESSIONS Music Program | GRADES 6-12

Explore professional music production as you learn how to use the most important tools of the industry like Fruity Loops, Garage Band, & Reason 9. Create and modify sounds, and learn layering, mixing and sampling. You’ll even program your own drum beats while making digital music. “Sessions” will teach students the fundamen-tal skills needed to explore the increasingly popular world of digital music production. Students will dive deep into different electronic music genres and experiment with professional techniques, with guidance from experienced instructors. Teens will have the chance to showcase their projects at a culminating art and music show at the end of the season. Drop in to try it out and sign up! Call 981-6674 for more information.

Leadership for Life Academy | GRADE 9This program is designed to help facilitate the transition to high school and focuses on developing leadership skills and civic engage-ment. We emphasize effective communication skills, life skills training, critical thinking, résumé building, homework assistance, time management, and many more important topics. Participants may have an opportunity to receive a stipend for full participation. Register online or at MLK Jr. Youth Services Center/YAP. For more information, please call 981-6671.

Teens will have the chance to practice their talents at Recreation Divi-sion events, as well as showcase their work in a culminating art and music show at the end of the season. Youth Commission identifi es youth needs and reviews and recommends programs. Mem-bers of the Youth Commssion must be Berkeley residents. Each Council Member appoints one member and the School Board appoints nine members for a total of eighteen members.
