What a wonderful Father’s Day celebration we had on Friday morning. The rain may have been falling but we all had a great time. There were so many dads, grandfathers, pops and uncles who took the time to come and celebrate with us and watch the many dance groups and choirs perform. Congratulations to all of our students who came early to participate. Thank you to the P&C who supplied all of the food and a very special thank you to my staff who came (many at 6 am) and cooked, served, organised and set up so that everything was ready to go when the dads turned up. There are so many ways that our students are involved in leadership opportunities at Berkeley Vale Public School and recently we had the opportunity to send twenty students from Year 5 and 6 to participate in the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community Leadership conference at Magenta Shores. Throughout the day students from seven primary schools, two high schools and The Entrance Senior Campus participated in workshops, listened to motivational speakers and joined in activities relating to leadership. This was a wonderful day where Mrs Rossington and Mrs Trasler could work with our students to further develop these skills. It is only one week until our KNX transition program commences. If you have or know of anyone within the Berkeley Vale area who have not yet enrolled their child in the amazing program, then please encourage them to contact the school office as soon as possible to secure their position. At this stage we are now offering 5 days (Monday-Friday) as numbers have grown so much. Please remember this year KNX will start at 9am and conclude at 11.30am in the Cottage. Last year our school participated in the Tell Them From Me survey which was extremely valuable to our school as it provided insight into student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices in our school from the perspective of the parents via the following link: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/bvps2016 I would like to encourage all parents to spend 15 minutes undertaking this survey as it will once again be used to determine future directions of our school. Last year our students in year 4-6 also participated in the Tell Them From Me student survey at school. It is intended that we will once again undertake this with students from 4-6 as we gained valuable information from them that was used to make significant changes in practices within the school. Narelle Armour—Principal PREMIERS SPELLING BEE CHAMPIONS STAGE 2 Well done to all seventeen class representatives who participated in our Stage 2 School Spelling Bee Competition last Thursday week. It was very competitive with some challenging words knocking out many good spellers in the early rounds. After five long rounds, there were still six contestants left battling it out. It took until the seventh round after the words kept increasing in difficulty before we had a winner. Our Stage 2 Winner was Sophie Gentle representing 3/4P who had a faultless seven rounds. The Runner-up was decided in a spell-off between Thomas Fitzgerald from 4T and Emma Richan from 3/4S who unfortunately misspelt her word to be eliminated. All three students are to be commended for their excellent effort in spelling many difficult words. Sophie and Thomas both now move on to represent Berkeley Vale School at the Regional Final to be held at Warnervale Public School on Tuesday 13 September. Congratulations go to our two successful finalists. We wish them all the best as they continue to practise their words. There are so many ways that our students are involved in leadership opportunities at Berkeley Vale Public School and recently we had the opportunity to send twenty students from Year 5 and 6 to participate in the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community Leadership conference at Magenta Shores. NETBALL Our girl’s netball team played against Warnervale Public School on Wednesday at Hamlyn Terrace Sports Ground. Both teams played extremely well, but unfortunately we were beaten by 3 goals, 16 – 13. Consequently we are knocked out of the PSSA Netball Competition for the year. I am very proud to have coached such a wonderful bunch of girls. All girls showed great sportsmanship on and off the court. I would like to thank the parents who have supported our girls throughout the year, whether it be to assist with coaching, with lifts to and from the games as well as training, or umpiring. Without you it would not have been such a wonderful experience. Thank you! Miss Hopley (Netball Coach)

BOOK PARADE The Children’s Book Council of Australia has announced this year’s winners and runners up in the various

categories for the Book of the Year Awards. The announcements were made during Book Week, which took place from Saturday the 20 August until Friday the 26 August, and can be found by taking a look at their website -> http://cbca.org.au/ To celebrate Book Week, and to help promote reading across the school, we will be holding a Book Parade in the Cool Zone on Friday the 23

September, which is the

last day of Term 3. The Book Parade will take place from 9.00am until around 9.30am, and will involve all students who dress as a character, author, illustrator, book or in line with this year’s theme – Australia: Story Country. Students will be guided through the Cool Zone up onto the stage, where they will stop briefly for a photo opportunity, before continuing back to their regular, class seating area.

YEAR 3 PERFORMANCE 2016 The 2016 Year 3 performance will be held on 21 and 22 September. On Wednesday 21 September there is a matinee performance ONLY. On Thursday 22 September there will be two performances, a matinee and an evening performance. Matinees commence at 11.35am and the night performance will commence at 7pm. Tickets for both performances can be purchased by sending an envelope marked with the number of tickets, time and date of performance together with payment with your child to their class teacher or the office. Please note on the payment envelope any special seating requirements, such as aisle seating for elderly relatives or back row.

ZONE ATHLETICS Congratulations to the 60 students who represented Berkeley Vale Public School at the Tuggerah Lakes Zone Athletics Carnival. It was an action filled day for our track and field athletes, many of whom achieved personal bests. Our relay teams must have channelled inspiration from Rio Olympic Games attaining 1 second place and 2 third places. Laura-Lee Mitchell (4J) performed exceptionally well in her events and was crowned the Junior Girls Athletics Champion. Overall, our school picked up the ‘bronze medal’ by coming 3rd out of the 13 local schools. The following students have qualified for the Sydney North Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park on Monday 12 September: Laura-Lee Mitchell (Jnr Relay and High Jump), Elizabeth Shearer (Jnr 800m), Alana Bennett (12/13yr 800m), Ella McCray (Jnr Relay), Emily Cocking (Jnr Relay), Teratai McLeish (Jnr Relay), Lexi Weber (12/13yr Shot Put and Discus), Kirra Hillman (11yr Discus), Kirby Wilding (9yr 100m), Cooper Clark (10yr 100m), Josh Farmilo (11yr Long Jump), Jack Testa (Jnr Discus). PUBLIC SPEAKING Last week stage 1 and stage 2 classes showcased their top public speakers from their class. Classes held a competition with the winner going on to represent their class in the Stage final. The speeches were engaging and the topics were relevant and interesting. The students spoke confidently and impressed the judges. The stage 1 winners were Hannah Brown and Addison Goldie. Stage 2 were Tahlia Wale and Sienna Ricketts. The girls will represent our school in the Central Coast public speaking final: Wyong division at Brooke Ave public school. Congratulations to all participants and good luck to our finalists

Congratulations to Addison Goldie and Tahlia Wale who made it through to the zone final. They will now represent Berkeley Vale at Warnervale Public school this week.

BOOK SALE

Lions Club of Chittaway Bay Inc is having a book sale If you have any books, magazines, DVDs or CDs that you no longer require and would like to donate for the sale please bring to the office. All funds raised go to local charities and organisations including local hospitals, schools, Rural Fire Brigades, Ronald McDonald room, cancer charities and many others. Any donations of books would be greatly appreciated.

This really is a great opportunity to encourage reading in a fun and interesting way, so it would be fantastic to see as many students involved in the parade as possible. Elaborate, interesting and ingenious costumes are always great to see, but just getting involved is the most important part of the parade. Keep an eye out for the teachers on the day – rumour has it the costumes being prepared are going to be quite spellbinding.

Mr Fitz—Teacher Librarian

OVERDUE NOTICES Overdue Notices for library books have been delivered to all classrooms and should be received by those students with overdue loans in the very near future. If your child brings one of these notices home, please disregard the notice number, however please take the time to see if you can find the books listed and have them returned to the school at the earliest possible convenience. Overdue notices will now be sent home at more regular intervals to help reduce the number of items that go missing from the library each year. If the notice shows any books that have already been returned, please send a note in with your child to be passed along to the library so this can be rectified. If the books are unable to be located a replacement book of similar quality can be given to the library or the cost of the book can be paid to the front office. If there are any questions, queries or concerns please contact Mr Fitz in the library.

PAYMENTS FOR P & C EVENTS Parents are advised that payments for P & C organised events eg: Mothers’ Day / Fathers’ stalls and fundraising events or special lunch orders cannot be made through the school’s website or EFTPOS facilities in the office as they are NOT school functions. The P & C has a separate bank account to the school and therefore these payments need to be made directly to the P & C or by cash in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name, class and the event being paid for.

PLEASE LABEL YOUR CHILDREN’S BELONGINGS!

Please help us return your children’s lost jumpers,

lunch boxes and drink bottles to them.

In the foyer there are two tubs for lost

property which are usually overflowing

with lost jumpers. It is most distressing to

find the majority are not labelled meaning

we are unable to return them to their

rightful owner.
