Into the Regions Beyond: Graduation 2012

On Saturday afternoon, May 19, the Class of 2012—along with parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends—

gathered for the Commencement Evensong in Marquand Chapel. This festive service was the occasion of the awarding of diplo-mas, certificates, and prizes. In addition to the Dean and staff of Berkeley Divinity School and Anglican faculty members, also present were YDS Dean Harry Attridge, Berkeley Trustees Chair Carl Anderson, and Head of Lutheran Studies and Divinity Librarian Paul Stuehrenberg.

The service opened with the premiere of a new hymn tune written by senior Benja-min Straley and dedicated to Dean Joseph H. Britton. The tune, Britton, was set to a wonderful text by Charles Wesley, “What shall I do, my God to love, my loving God to praise!” The festive liturgy continued with Psalm 33, Exultate Justi, “Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,” the singing of the school hymn (“Come, Holy Spirit, by whose grace this school each day has run its race”), and a homily by the Dean. Diplo-mas and certificates were then awarded to

the graduating class: the Diploma in Angli-can Studies (18); the Certificate in Anglican Studies (3); the Diploma in Lutheran Stud-ies (1); and the Certificate in Educational Leadership and Ministry (3).

In addition to the diplomas and cer-tificates, eight prizes were awarded. The E. William Muehl Prize in Preaching, was given to Janine Schenone. Ordained to the transitional diaconate over the summer, Janine is now a Ph.D. student in theology at Fordham University and assisting at Christ Church, Bronxville. The R. Lansing Hicks Prize for the graduating student who did the most to benefit the Berkeley community during his or her time in seminary went to Andrew Barnett. Andy is the embodiment of multiple ways of doing ministry, completing a dual degree in Divinity and Forestry and constantly seeking ways to enhance each ministry with the other. An accomplished jazz musician, Andy made the most of his senior pilgrimage to Canterbury, worked closely with their Director of Music and, before the week was out, received a com-mission for a Jazz Mass that was presented

in Canterbury Cathedral in June. Andy was ordained to the priesthood over the sum-mer and is now serving as Music Director and teacher of environmental science at the Darrow School in upstate New York; he also assists at a parish on the weekends. Benja-min Straley received the Thomas Philips Memorial Award for showing exceptional achievement and further promise in the study and practice of Anglican liturgy and is now organist at the National Cathedral Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in Washing-ton, DC and an aspirant for Holy Orders in the Diocese of Connecticut. The St. Luke’s Award for outstanding contribution to the worship life of BDS was presented to Sam Owen whose care of the community was evident in liturgy, most specifically through the offering of a healing ministry as part of our Wednesday evening Eucharist. Sam is now Rector of the Haitian Congregation of the Good Samaritan in Bronx, NY.

In addition to those four Berkeley prizes for graduating seniors, one YDS prize was awarded by Dean Harry Attridge. The Bradford E. Ableson Prize for Ecclesiasti-

cal Leadership is awarded each year to the student who, in the judgment of the faculty, possesses the most outstanding qualities of judgment and character to the future exer-cise of church leadership (awarded with a preference for Anglican students). This year, that prize was awarded to senior Jesse Zink. Jesse, ordained to the priesthood over the summer, is studying for a Ph.D. in theol-ogy at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, UK.

Two current students received prizes for academic achievement: rising senior Leigh Mackintosh (postulant, Diocese of South-western Virginia) received the William Palmer Ladd Prize; and rising middler Jus-

tin Crisp (aspirant, Diocese of East Tennes-see) was awarded the E. Lee McGee Prize.

Our graduates are now serving in par-ishes, schools and missions all over the country and into the regions beyond! In addition to those mentioned above, Terri Bays is curate, Cathedral of St. James, South Bend, IN; Stephen Blackmer is curate, St. Paul’s Church, Concord, NH; Hilary Cam-blos is rector, St. Thomas’, Abingdon, VA; Otis Gaddis, chaplain, University of Mary-land, College Park; Jennifer Landis Owen is curate, Christ Church, Greenwich, CT; Ali-son Lutz is with Partners in Health, Haiti; Matt Lindeman is an administrator at the Episcopal Camp and Conference Center,

Diocese of Massachusetts; Shane Marcus, Teach for America in PA; Kelly Moughty is associate, St. Alban’s, Cape Elizabeth, ME; Emily Phillips, associate, Calvary Church, Stonington, CT; Josh Rodriguez is associ-ate, Good Shepherd, Ruxton, MD; Marissa Rohrbach, associate, Holy Trinity, Philadel-phia, PA; Matt Schneider, Prince George Winyah Church, Georgetown, SC; Amy Spagna, associate, Trinity Church, Bethle-hem, PA; and Anne Spear, Yale University Department of English.

We at Berkeley already miss them greatly, and hope that Berkeleyites who live near any of them will make yourselves known to them. —Greta Getlein

Global Mission Initiative

With deep thanks to a generous donor and friend of Berkeley Divinity School, nine students were awarded travel grants totaling $10,000. The stated purpose of the grant was to “build relationships of mutual partner-ship and understanding” across the Anglican Communion. These grants, by and large, provided matching or supplemental funds to mission grants already awarded the students by the Episcopal Education Society and the Seminary Consultation on Mission. Students traveled to Panama, El Salvador (group trip), Cuba, Honduras, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Ghana. Each student was transformed in some way by the experience; and each is deeply grateful for the opportunities afforded by the grant.

The Panama Project Jordan Haynie ’13The Panama Project is a unique opportunity for mission; you could almost say it’s mission backwards. The Panama Project is the Diocese of Panama’s mis-sion to the American Episcopal Church. I learned about the his-tory of US-Panamanian rela-tions, both in government and in the church, traveled around the country to observe the work of the church, and reflected upon how TEC can learn from our Panamanian brothers and sisters. In the course of the

trip, I led worship in Spanish, preached (in English), taught religion at an Episcopal school

(also in Spanish—eek!), and toured historical sights, includ-ing the Panama Canal. I highly recommend the Panama Project for future travelers who want to learn more about ministry in the Latino/a community (and improve their Spanish!).

Our Little Roses Orphanage, HondurasLisa Zaina ’13I was fortunate enough to spend three weeks in Honduras at Our Little Roses Orphanage in San Pedro Sula. I taught vocabulary, math, and art to first through

third grade students at the Holy Family Bilingual School in the morning, and in the afternoon I took Spanish classes. I also was able to get to know the girls in the orphanage. Spending time with people who face daily challenges with such joy was inspiring.

El SalvadorAnne Thatcher ’14, Jamie Maury ’14, Janine Schenone ’12, The Rev. Greta GetleinThree students, accompanied by the Director of Anglican Studies, visited the Anglican Diocese of El Salvador in May. The goal was to continue to build a relationship for the sharing of ideas and resources. The group traveled all over the country visiting schools, Angli-can communities, churches and missions. By the end of the week, the entire group was unanimous: God was present in the intense community-based ministry of this diocese and it was powerful to behold.

South AfricaElaine Thomas ’13I travelled to Cape Town, South Africa, for a three-week train-ing course, “Healing Individual

and Collective Wounds,” at the Institute for Healing of Memo-ries. The Institute was founded in 1998 by Fr. Michael Laps-ley, SSM, an anti-apartheid priest and activist who lost an eye and both hands in a letter bomb attack in 1990. Hundreds of people have been helped to reconcile with themselves and with those who have caused them harm through Healing

of Memories workshops held in areas emerging from conflict around the world, including in the US. I hope to put into prac-tice what I have learned to fur-ther my own work in healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

ZimbabweBeth Phillips ’13I spent nearly three weeks in Zimbabwe with Bertha Gowera who, it is hoped, will be the first ordained woman in Zimbabwe. We visited her childhood home and the village where she grew up. Her late father was the first Christian convert of English missionary The Rev. Arthur Shelley Cripps. He was head-master of a missionary school and founded the first Anglican congregation in the district of Wedza, Zimbabwe. More than 50 years later, Bertha and her siblings built a church for use by the entire community for

worship and other community events. They hope to donate part of their large family farm to a project that will generate income and economic opportu-nities for people in the area who remain woefully impoverished but spiritually rich.

Some Reflections on the Educational Leadership and Ministry (ELM) ProgramBy Tony Jarvis

The E.L.M. Courses and CertificateThe Divinity School offers three courses which prepare for ministry in schools and colleges: Yale Chaplain Sharon Kugler’s course in models and methods of univer-sity chaplaincy, my course in leadership ministry in schools, and a seminar I offer in advanced topics in leadership ministry in schools and colleges. Students may take any of these courses. Last spring I had a record number of students in my course in schools ministry—23—and two-thirds were non-Berkeley students.

One of the most time-consuming aspects of my job is helping graduating students write resumes and practice inter-views for teaching and chaplaincy positions in schools. I try to be proactive in contact-ing schools about our students. Since I have students of many denominations, some of my conversations are with schools that regard Yale with suspicion. Our two ELM field trips last spring were deliberately made to a Catholic girls’ school and a new and flourishing Evangelical school. Hap-pily, YDS has now established a supervised ministry with the latter. We aim to serve a broad spectrum of schools.

But students can do more than take the ELM courses. They also have the oppor-tunity to fulfill additional requirements—including a supervised ministry in a school or college—and receive the Certificate in Educational Leadership and Ministry. At graduation last June, Dean Britton awarded three Certificates of Educational Leader-ship and Ministry, and there are a number in the pipeline for the coming year.

Episcopal Chaplains’ ConferenceIn late June, Berkeley hosted a one-day conference for nearly 40 Episcopal college chaplains from across the country. This gathering preceded the three-day interna-tional ecumenical conference of chaplains convened at Yale immediately following.

This conference began with Bishop Ian

Douglas presiding and preaching at the Eucharist on Sunday evening, June 24, fol-lowed by a cocktail reception on the Dean’s porch at the Berkeley Center and dinner. The conference continued on the YDS campus Monday morning and afternoon focusing on topics of concern established by the chaplains’ leadership group.

ELM Representation at ConferencesI often represent the ELM Program at conferences. In June, for example, I spoke on “Drury of St. Paul’s: The Sorrows of Success” at the St. James Conference on Church Schools, after which I preached at the Evensong which inaugurated the cel-ebration of Father Stuart Dunnan’s 20th anniversary as headmaster of St. James. Later in June, I attended the Country Day School Headmasters’ annual conference, this year at Pomona College.

In July, I flew to Australia for the second summer (their winter!) in a row. Last year in Tasmania I gave the keynote address

at the annual gathering of the Anglican Schools of Australia, and this summer I flew to Melbourne for the highly stimu-lating conference of International Boys’ School Coalition at Scotch College—525 delegates strong from all over the world.

This September I journeyed to Assisi as the Fetzer Foundation gathered delegates from around the world for a conference on love and forgiveness. I serve in the Educa-tion Committee of the foundation.

Helping SchoolsOn my way to Australia, I spent an after-noon and evening with Maryetta Anschutz at the new Episcopal School which she has founded in Los Angeles. It was thrilling to be “present at the creation” and to witness the miracle Maryetta has wrought.

In September I gave the opening of school address at Boston Trinity Academy, the new Evangelical school in Boston. I continue to be called frequently and asked to recommend candidates for chaplaincies and for teaching religion, to give advice on school head searches, to deal with school heads and chaplains in crisis.

Wesley-Royce Summer Leadership Colloquium on Spiritual Vitality in Parishes

In early June representatives from over 60 parishes came to Berkeley to participate in the Wesley-Royce Leadership Col-

loquium. Modeled on the School of Man-agement executive symposia, this intensive two day workshop grew out of eight years of research and 80,000 surveys examining the question of spiritual vitality in parishes. Can spiritual vitality be measured and can it be deepened and, if so, what are the steps a parish can take to achieve such a deep-ening? Drawing from their experience at the Willow Creek mega-church and at the Episcopal parish of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, IL, Greg Hawkins, Jay Sidebotham, Eric Arnson, and others addressed a sym-posium of 87 participants.

Those who were present now have the opportunity to be part of a pilot program to help build an Episcopal data base on congregational spiritual vitality. The Dio-cese of Chicago has fifteen parishes in the second trial year and we hope that this work will be available to the entire Episco-

pal Church in the years to come. Research shows that the key catalyst in congrega-tional growth is spiritual vitality.

Berkeley is deeply grateful to David and Sara Carson who began our leader-ship work and to the Royce Foundation which supports this Colloquium as well as endowing leadership training for our stu-dents and the wider church.

Youth Ministry NOW Parish youth ministers and those who are responsible for spiritual life and work in schools and colleges share some common concerns. Skip Masback, Senior Minister of the New Canaan Congregational Church and guru of parochial youth work in New England, spearheaded last spring’s Berke-ley colloquium on youth ministry. This initiative was generously supported by the Wesley-Royce Leadership endowment. Our students were put in direct contact with con-gregations where youth ministry was flour-ishing, and also heard presentations by some of the leading speakers on youth work today. These speakers also addressed New England clergy and youth workers at a series of lun-cheons. Happily, Skip, in conjunction with the Center for Faith and Culture and Berke-ley, has organized, for this academic year, a set of eight lectures on youth work, open to all YDS students and to practitioners within driving distance. Four of last year’s lectur-ers—Andrew Root, Roland Martinson, Skip Masbach, and Rodger Nishioka—will be joined this year by Chap Clark, Michael Bird, and YDS’s own Tom Troeger.

The Youth Ministry: Now banner welcomes guests to Berkeley Center last January.

Berkeley hosted a lunch for Episcopal leaders involved in the Summer Symposium: Religion and Environmental Stewardship. The symposium was made possible by the H. Boone and Violet M. Porter endowment for the Chair in Religion and Environmental Stewardship. The Rev. Nicholas Porter ’94 (second from right) participated in the opening panel, and The Rev. Stephanie Johnson (fourth from right), who serves as Energy Minister for Province I, led a workshop.

Berkeley Divinity School 2011-2012 Annual Fund Donors

Dear Alumni and Friends of Berkeley,

it hAs been my honor to serve as the Annual Appeal Chair for Berkeley and I am happy to report that thanks to your great generosity in this very difficult economy we were able to meet our goal of $430,000. The semi-nary ended the fiscal year with a total of $445,726.73. Your great response is a testament to the love and respect you have for this great seminary.

The combination of parish and alumni giving accounted for over 63% of the total raised. In these days of struggling parishes it is heartening to note that 107 parishes contributed $188,762 and 364 graduates offered support of $93,485. Our alumni individual participation has increased from 17% in 2008 to 25%. Our trustees and staff also led with their generosity with gifts totaling $88,952. Jeff and I remain active and we want to offer our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to all of the Berkeley community that continue to support the future generations of Episcopal leadership. We can assure you that it is a wise and wonderful investment.

We have much to give thanks for and I encourage you to be as generous in the coming year as the seminary continues to rely heavily on our support.

Faithfully in Christ,

Carol Pinkham Oak, M.Div. ’86Chair, Berkeley 2011-12 Annual Fund

The Berkeley Community’s Generosity Enables Seminary to Achieve Annual Fund Goal of $430,000

Berkeley Board Chair Carl Anderson expressed his profound gratitude to the graduates, trustees, parishes, friends, and staff who enabled the seminary to make its Annual Fund goal in 2011-12:

“Berkeley’s Annual Fund is crucial; it underwrites all the seminary’s pro-grams. All our students are Yale Divinity students and their tuition goes entirely to the University. Berkeley relies on graduates, friends and parishes to provide the where-with-all to balance our budget and to support new initiatives that will help us to remain the Episcopal Church’s vanguard seminary. Your faithful gifts year after year enable us to maintain our leadership in theological education. We are grateful to the friends, graduates, and parishes that stretched this year to help us reach our goal of $430,000. Each gift truly helps Berkeley to train the next gen-eration of Episcopal leadership!” Senior Class pilgrimage to Canterbury 2012
