Berklee College of Music would like to dedicate the 2013 HighSchool Jazz Festival to a truly caring, incredibly gifted, inspirationalmusician and world renowned music educator: Phil Wilson.
Wilson joined the Berklee College of Music faculty in September1965, and has had an active role in the evolution of Berklee into aninternationally acclaimed institution. As part of Berklee’s TromboneDepartment (which he chaired until 1974) and Brass Department
(where he is professor), Wilson has developed new approaches to playing tromboneand teaching brass technique. He has also made significant contributions to thearranging curriculum having written the 1968 hit arrangement of “Mercy Mercy”for the Buddy Rich Orchestra. Wilson also has directed clinics at FrankfurtConservatory, Harvard University, Kansas State University, Mellon Arts Center,Sidney Conservatorium, University of California, Yale University and other placesaround the world. He is the former chair of the jazz division at Boston’s NewEngland Conservatory of Music and a former member of the board of directors ofthe International Trombone Association.
Wilson has performed with Louis Armstrong, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, HerbieHancock, Woody Herman, Thad Jones, and Clark Terry, as well as the DorseyBrothers Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Big Band, Hanover Radio Symphony Orchestra,Danish Radio Big Band, and Metropole Orchestra. He has recorded for the BostonPops, RCA, Polydor, Capri, Columbia, Famous Door, Freeform, Seaside, and SESAC.Wilson appeared in November 2001 on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on NationalPublic Radio.
The Rainbow Band, formerly the International Dues Band, is one of the oldest andmost prestigious ensembles at Berklee College of Music. When Wilson formed theband in 1965, it began as one of many classroom ensembles at Berklee, givingstudents a chance to gain valuable ensemble experience both in arranging andperformance. Comprised of students from all over the globe, the band earned areputation as one of this country’s top college groups performing contemporaryjazz, appearing on national television and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1985, as the number of international students grew (it is now over 30%), Wilsonchanged the name to represent all the colors of the rainbow. Prominent Berkleealumni who were members of the band include: Cyrus Chestnut ’85, MakotoOzone ’83, Ernie Watts ’66, Terri Lyne Carrington ’83, John Scofield ’73, Bill Pierce’73, Abe Laboriel Jr. ’93 and Abe Laboriel Sr. ’72, Joe Cohn ’90, Richie Cole ’67,Hal Crook ’71, Christopher Hollyday ’96, Tiger Okoshi ’75, Art Barron ’78, RoyHargrove ’89, Darren Barrett ’90, George Garzone ’72, Rob Mounsey ’75, ClaudioRoditi ’70, and Manhattan Transfer arranger Dennis Wilson ’74.
“Teaching is also like watching your garden blossom. You can actually feel thegrowth and the realization. Recently, a trombone student in our lesson was havingtrouble moving around the trombone comfortably at a faster tempo. We were bothplaying together, and he stopped all of a sudden after playing something that wasreally magnificent. He looked at me and he said, ‘You know, I think we’ve just hada breakthrough.’ When that happens, it’s thrilling.”—Phil Wilson
