The Berlin Historical Soci-ety has been preserving the town’s past for 21 years, and the annual holiday fundraiser is a decade-long tradition.

President Kate Kearns es-timated that over 300 people passed through the histori-cal society on Dec. 5 or Dec. 6, some who were first-time visitors. The historical soci-ety nearly sold out of boxes of homemade cookies baked by members, according to Lorraine Stub. The event is the second-largest source of funding for historical society programs and the museum, after the Berlin Fair.

According to Stub, the event is especially enjoyed by members for the more laid-back atmosphere when compared with the fair. His-torical society members en-joyed the chance to chat with

visitors, including some who are new to town and wanted to know the history of their houses. Members shared sto-ries and got out old maps to answer questions, share the history of the town, and wel-come these new residents.

The historical society also commemorated the 75th an-niversary of the creation of Rudolph the Red Nosed Rein-deer with a display and by giving away reindeer horns

It’s official — On Trays is the new name of the Berlin High School Cafeteria.

The Board of Education awarded a certificate of rec-ognition to BHS student Lisa Greico at the Dec. 8 meeting for selecting the name. As part of the grand re-open-ing of the school’s refur-bished cafeteria, a contest was held to rename the cafe-teria. Many suggestions were put forth, including the Red-coats’ Café, but the winning entry was Lisa’s clever play on words, On Trays, and the teenager was given a gift card to the cafeteria as well as the certificate of recognition.

Festivities at the East Ber-lin Fire Department drew dozens of locals to help raise donations for the Ber-lin food pantry.

The annual Christmas by the Grove event is named because the East Berlin Fire Department is located next to Clark’s Grove, a neighbor-hood park with a playscape.

Christmas by the Grove began four years ago to raise donations for the food

pantry. “It’s also a chance to have a nice community get-together,” said Ladies Auxiliary President Kathy Wnuk.

The event was put on by the Ladies Auxiliary, a group made up of female family members of East Berlin fire-fighters: wives, sisters, and mothers, Wnuk said.

The event featured an appearance by Santa Claus, baked goods from Ladies Auxiliary members, balloon animals and balloon flowers created by UpBeat volun-

teers, and a musical perfor-mance by a team of Berlin High School Madrigal Sing-ers, Sound Express from McGee Middle School, and fifth grade students from Hubbard Elementary.

“They invited us for the first time this year,” said music teacher Kathyrn Crabb Scherer, who co-di-rected the group with mu-sic teacher Shelby Ryan.

Southington officials ponder Berlin’s sports complex plan

Southington’s top eco-nomic development official is confident that the plan for a sports complex can succeed there despite a similar busi-ness expected to open in Ber-lin in 2016.

There’s enough demand for a sports complex to sus-tain both businesses, said Lou Perillo, economic develop-ment coordinator.

“We feel the area is prime for a sports complex,” he said. “I choose to remain positive. I choose to stick with the plan.”

Southington is investing nearly $40,000 in engineer-ing work for a West Street property and hopes to at-tract a developer to build a sports complex on the 35 acres there. The Sepko fam-ily owns the land which the town will market to a private company. According to the contract between the Sepko family and the town, if the land sells through the town’s efforts the engineering money is reimbursed.

Woodard & Curran was hired to develop a place-holder plan and submit it for approval by Southington Plan-ning and Zoning Commission. That approval will help at-tract a developer, Perillo said, who might be worried about getting denied by the town.

If a sports complex is built it will be operated by a private company, not the town.

Washington Management LLC, of Hamden, proposed the sports complex at a Berlin

town meeting late last month on behalf of Addi Develop-ment Group LLC, owned by developers Ernest Addi and Moustapha Diakhate. The 265,000-square-foot complex will be built on 57 acres off the southern end of Berlin Turn-pike, south of Meadow Lane.

The Berlin and Southing-ton complexes would be sep-

arated by a 20-minute drive.Perillo said there’s enough

interest in a sports complex among ESPN employees, sports leagues in Southing-ton and regional sports en-thusiasts to support both businesses.

A New Britain man was charged with arson in con-nection with a fire at the Johnson’s Motel on Dec. 8.

Fire Marshall Steve Waznia said firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at Johnson’s Motel, 1879 Berlin Turnpike, at approximately 1:08 p.m. Dec. 8. “We had smoke showing in room 9,” the fire marshall said.

The fire was extinguished before spreading away from room 9, and firefighters and police then cooperated on an investigation. Firefighters determined that the fire orig-inated from within the room, and that it was intentionally set using “available ordinary combustibles,” Waznia said.

The police investigation resulted in charges being brought against 18-year-old

Mohamed Qatabi, who po-lice say confessed to the crime. According to police, Qatabi had a dispute with the occupant of the room, and entered, may have taken something, and then set some items of clothing on fire.

“I don’t think he expected the room to catch fire,” Dep-uty Chief John Klett said.

The suspect was appre-hended via a cab company he allegedly used to flee the scene. Police say Qatabi then confessed.

Qatabi was arraigned the following day. He has been charged with a class A felony, arson in the first degree, as well as criminal mischief in

the first degree, a class C fel-ony, and misdemeanor sixth degree larceny. Qatabi was ar-raigned Dec. 9 and the case is awaiting a plea bargain. Ac-cording to New Britain Supe-rior Court records, Qatabi is being held under a $10,000 bond and has not been re-leased from custody.

A Cheshire High School graduate who died in a car crash in Berlin will be re-membered by friends for her kindness and her sense of humor.

Isabelle Gozzo, 19, was a passenger in a one-car crash early Dec. 13. She was ejected from the car, and succumbed to her injuries at Hartford Hospital, state police said.

Anthony Longo, 22, of Ber-lin, was driving the car south-bound on Route 9 near Exit 21 around 2:15 a.m. lost control, state police said. Longo drove off the road and shoulder of the right side of the highway, where he struck a light pole, a rock wall, and rolled several times, state police said. The car finally stopped in the me-dian of the Exit 21 on-ramp to Route 9 south.

Gozzo was transported to Hartford Hospital by ambu-lance, where she was pro-nounced dead, state police

said. State police are still inves-

tigating, and said Longo ap-peared to have minor injuries.

Hundreds of Gozzo’s friends and family gathered at Cheshire High School’s foot-ball field the night of Dec. 13 to mourn her loss and share stories of her life. Her name, “Izzy,” had been spelled out in block letters with glow sticks on the turf, just be-hind a large portrait of her. A growing collection of flowers and glow sticks sat in front of her photo.

“Isabella was beautiful,” Samantha Welch said to the crowd gathered. “She was one of the craziest best friends I’ve ever had. A lot of us bonded with her, she was a great addition to the Cheshire High School Class of 2014.”

Alex Volpert also spoke.“Izzy was the sweetest girl

I’ve ever met. She was more than an angel,” he said. “She accepted everyone for who they were; she was just the kindest person I knew,” he

added afterward. Jeff Solan, principal of

Cheshire High School, sent an email to students and fam-ilies of the school Saturday afternoon.

“It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of the pass-ing of Isabella Gozzo. Isa-bella was a 2014 graduate of Cheshire High School. She was a beautiful, talented, and engaging young woman and her passing is a tragic shock to our community. Please keep Isabella’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement reads.

He added that counseling services were to be avail-able for students through the

Local teen dancer reaches out

Through dance, local teen Margot Paul is reaching out to children with autism.

Paul, a Berlin High School junior, recently became a teacher’s assistant at the West Hartford based Ballet Theater Company, which presented a creative move-ment workshop for children with autism. The project is a collaboration between BTC and Autism Families Connecticut.

The workshop aims to help autistic kids “fearlessly express themselves through movement and dance,” ac-cording to a press release.

“Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder need more opportunities to par-ticipate in many of the ex-tracurricular programs that typical children have avail-able to them and we ap-preciate partners such as the Ballet Theatre Com-

pany with wh o m we can develop programs designed to address t h e s p e -cif ic needs of children on the spec-trum,” Ex-ecutive Director of AFC Mary Helen Richer said in a statement.

Activities the children are led in by Margot and other instructors include ribbon dancing, parachute games, story time, and patterned movements like walking in a circle, skipping, and marching.

“I am grateful to have had many years of dance train-ing and now be able to share my passion with these chil-dren. Week after week I see them really open up and grow. Watching them re-minds me that dancing isn’t always about the technique

or how good it looks; it is about the emotion it brings. They love dancing as much as I do. This experience has inspired me to consider a double major in dance and psychology in college,” Mar-got said in a statement.

This isn’t all for Margot: she also was to appear in a special outreach perfor-mance of The Nutcracker with professional dancers in New York City, which oc-curred after press time.

The performance was to serve veterans and children and families in need.

Margot will also perform in The Nutcracker from Dec. 18 to Dec. 22 in West Hart-ford at the University of Saint Joseph.

“Our rehearsals run for about six hours with few or no breaks,” Margot said. “It is very hard work and helps me build endurance and stamina. We are treated as equals to the profession-als, so our director has high

expectations of us. Being in NYC and feeling the city life as a dancer is really exciting and I hope to continue danc-ing in NYC in college and afterwards.”

The Public Works De-partment would like to in-form residents of the local ordinances that apply to the removal of ice and snow from public roadways. Prop-erty owners are not allowed to shovel, throw or plow ice and snow from private property into, or across a public street. These actions are strictly prohibited and subject to a written warning and/or $100 fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Munici-pal Code.

Residents are further ad-vised that they are respon-sible to clear snow and ice from any public sidewalk

fronting along their prop-erty. All sidewalks are to be cleared and/or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plow-ing operations. It is the re-sponsibility of the property owner fronting that side-walk to make it safe for pub-lic travel. Failure to comply will subject the abutting property owner to a written warning and/or $100 fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code.

No Parking Bans become effective automatically (or at the discretion of the Di-rector of Public Works) whenever there is an accu-

mulation of four (4) inches or more of snow and ice on any of the streets of the town. No Parking Bans will terminate no sooner than eight (8) hours after any snowstorm, or as directed by the Director of Public Works.

Any vehicle left parked on the street after such No Parking Ban has taken ef-fect, will be towed and sub-ject to a fine and all towing and storage charges.

For further questions re-garding snow removal op-erations, call the Public Works Department at (860) 828-7022.

As part of the continual effort to provide quality ser-vices for local youth, the Town of Berlin has created a Juvenile Review Board that

will offer a community based alternative to families expe-riencing school, family and minor criminal issues.

The goal of the JRB is

to offer community based solutions to deal with these issues while avoiding the delays, costs and stigma as-sociated with the court and legal system. Berlin’s JRB consists of representatives from the Youth/Social ser-vices, McGee Middle and Berlin High schools, police, juvenile probation, DCF and the community.

The JRB will review re-ferrals from the police, schools, and parents for ac-ceptance into the program and will design alternatives that promote responsible behavior by offenders, help families solve the problems that may be the root cause of inappropriate behavior, and help the offender un-derstand how their actions impact the community. Area Cold War relics continue to fascinate

Though the Cold War era is over, relics from the past still slumber in the area around Berlin.

You can still see the re-mains of the Nike missile base lookout on Pinnacle Rock in Plainville, and in Cromwell many of the original build-ings from that Nike missile base still stand, though they are substantially overgrown and some have been vandal-ized. The Nike missile bases housed Nike Hercules mis-siles armed with nuclear warheads intended to be able to shoot entire squadrons of Russian bombers out of the sky before they could attack America’s shores.

The secret of nuclear mis-siles “right in our back yards (was) one of the best kept secrets of the Cold War,” ac-cording to history buff John Ramsey. Ramsey said he has been fascinated by the Cold War era since growing up as

part of the “duck and cover generation, meaning I was probably 7-years-old when

the Cuban Missile Crisis took place.” Ramsey is the webmaster of Coldwar-CT.com, a site that seeks to share some surprising facts about the Cold War in Connecticut. Some of the most surprising? Hartford was considered a strategic target for nuclear attack, with nearby missile

sites under 24-hour alert to shoot down incoming Rus-sian bombers. Underground communication sites for the now-defunct U.S. AUTOVON network remain in Cheshire, Durham, and Meriden. The AUTOVON Network sites were operated by AT&T and existed to keep communi-

cations online in the event of a domestic attack. “Sites like the Durham site were placed where they were be-cause Hartford and Bridge-port were targets, and in the event of an attack on (one of those towns) communica-tion would continue,” Ram-sey said.

In Cheshire, another enor-mous underground com-munication complex was

manned 24 hours per day with a staff of four supervi-sors and 18 technicians. The site managed communica-tions between Hartford and New Haven and was part of a junction for underground co-axial cables connecting Bos-ton to Miami.

The Nike missile sites were eventually rendered obsolete, and the local missile bases now stand abandoned. “They

were outmoded when we saw we can’t have missiles shoot down other missiles,” Ram-sey said, adding that “even 50 years later, it’s hard (to do)… like shooting a bullet with a bullet.”

Ramsey said he recalls that, as a 7-year-old, the Cu-ban Missile Crisis was the first time he had ever really thought seriously about the president or the war. “I saw the reaction my parents had and it was pretty profound,”

Ramsey said. When his par-ents started to set aside food storage for an emergency and when he learned that those who lived farther than 15 min-utes from school were to re-main in the building during an emergency, it left an im-pression. “Being 7-years-old and being told you’re going to be stuck in school for the end of the world was pretty sobering,” Ramsey said. “I dealt with it by learning as much as I could.”

Ramsey later went on to become an engineer, and amassed a collection of sto-ries and photographs that he shares with the world

through his websites, includ-ing another site for Massa-chusetts, coldwar-ma.com.

Letters to the Editor

Remembering those who served

To the editor:Again this year I have been

tasked along with my Ma-rine Corps League Auxiliary members with providing happy holidays-type bags to our veterans at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home that play Bingo on the third Friday of each month.

We provide them with clothing items as well as personal sundry items for personal grooming and care. Many of these veterans have no family to depend on. They look for outside help. As in the past, we, the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, find ourselves short of funds to provide these veterans with these quality of life items.

Although President Lin-coln said at one time that we

must take care of the families of our veterans he did not say how to care for the veterans.

Once again this year the Berlin Knights of Columbus came through with much needed revenue to help pay for many of the items we oth-erwise would not have been able to provide.

Along with their annual collection for the veterans held at the Berlin VFW we will be able to give our veter-ans those needed items.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Knights of Columbus and the people and businesses that donated so freely. On be-half of the veterans: Semper Fidelis.

and red noses to child visi-tors. Rudolph first appeared in a 1939 booklet by Robert May published by Montgom-ery Ward. The famous rein-deer’s name was nearly Rollo or Reginald, and in 1964 the famous stop-motion holiday special aired, making 2014 its 50th anniversary.

The fundraiser supports historical society programs and speakers, with the selec-tion process beginning next month. The funds also go to $400 scholarships for Berlin

High School students who write essays about why lo-cal history is important. The group awarded two scholar-ships this year.

This year’s festivities were held near a specially deco-rated tree featuring a hand-made garland. The garland was woven by Pennsylvania nuns out of palm leaves from an Easter Sunday celebra-tion, adding holiday cheer to the collection of historical artifacts.

Kennedy also honored Ki-ara Landeo, a high school sophomore and member of the bike club and radio club who he said came to the United States from Peru. Ki-ara mastered “the English language in only eight short years,” Kennedy said, and she hopes to one day become a

doctor, a goal the principal said her top grades will help her achieve.

Kiara was said to have a natural ability with abstract concepts and was empathetic and helpful to her fellow stu-dents who were struggling with chemistry. “She is to be commended,” Kennedy said.

McGee Middle School Principal Sal Urso awarded a Berlin Bravo to Carly Grega and Jenna Zup, both in grade six. Carly helped make the annual coat drive a success, Urso said. “Not only does she take care of herself, she is also a compassionate and caring citizen in school,”

Urso said. Jenna was said to be a

model student with a strong work ethic and good atten-tion to detail. Jenna plans to become a teacher, and her fa-vorite subject is math, Urso said.

“During the holidays we consider what to be grate-ful for,” said board president Gary Brochu, who expressed gratitude for the excellent students and hardworking staff in the Berlin school system.

The Lady Redcoats be-gan their season in a less than encouraging way, yet righted the ship to finish their first week of play 1-1.

Berlin fell in unflattering fashion to Farmington to begin its 2014-’15 campaign, losing 80-35 to the Indians. BHS sophomore Alyssa Grant was the game’s sec-ond highest scorer with 19 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a dominating Farmington team that eas-ily outscored Berlin in ev-

ery quarter. Sophomore Nina D’Amato added seven points for the Redcoats.

The local girls re-bounded nicely in their final game of the week, besting Middletown 43-31. Berlin used an impressive second quarter, in which the Redcoats outscored their foes 18-0, to bury the Blue Dragons early.

D’Amato was vital to the team’s win with 12 points, while senior Alyssa Ger-mano (nine points) and freshman Alana Garofalo (eight) also made contri-butions for the victors.

Girls hoops starts .500By Nate BrownThe Berlin Citizen

Things didn’t play out as Berlin’s large fan base would have hoped.

They were hoping to greet their guys after the game with a wave of jubilation and con-gratulations, with the Red-coats taking home their first state title since 2009.

Instead, when all was said and done, it was the opposing sideline that was celebrating a championship.

Despite great clock man-agement and strong play in between the 20 yard lines, Berlin fell at the hands of the Brookfield Bobcats, 14-0, Fri-day night at Veterans Stadium in the Class M Large Division title game.

“I think the kids went out and played hard. I’m very proud of our seniors; we had an outstanding senior class,” said coach John Capodice. “If we can win 11 games every year, sign us up.”

After demolishing Cheney Tech in their semif inal matchup, the Redcoats looked poised to win against Brook-field with the same ideals that got them to the championship game: strong defense, strong

running, and timely passing.Unfortunately, Berlin only

accomplished two of those three things on a consis-tent basis in the title game, as a pick six interception by Brookfield’s Gabe Pompette at the 9:50 mark in the first quarter proved to be the dif-ference maker in the game.

“It’s part of the game. What are you gonna do? You’ve got to keep playing the game,” Capodice said of the early deficit. “You’re not going to fold up in ten. You’ve got 48 minutes to go, you fight

through the adversity; the kids did.”

The Bobcats put the nail in the coffin with 3:49 left to go in the fourth when tailback Bobby Drysdale reached the end zone on a 15-yard run, bouncing off multiple poten-tial tacklers in the process.

Drysdale proved to be a thorn in Berlin’s collective side all evening, as he gashed

Brookfield duo does damage in finals

Too much Robert Drysdale, too much Gabe Pompette.

The Brookf ie ld duo wrecked Berlin’s Class M small championship hopes leading the Bobcats to a 14-0 win at Veterans Stadium at Willow Brook Park Friday night.

Drysdale was brilliant on both sides of the ball. He ran for 117 yards on 21 carries and scored the game-wrap-ping touchdown in the fourth quarter. But more than that, he was a terror on defense with nine tackles, including four sacks of Berlin quarter-back Alec Norton. It was a Drysdale sack that set up his own touchdown.

With Brookfield (12-2)

clinging to a 7-0 lead, Norton was sacked inside his own 10-yard line. That sack led to a punt that was returned to the 15-yard line. Next play, Drysdale scored.

Game, set, match.Pompette, who had six

solo tackles, also scored the only touchdown the Bobcats would need when he returned a Norton pass 41 yards for a touchdown just two minutes and 10 seconds into the game.

Berlin (11-2) had one great opportunity with a first and goal at the 4-yard line in the third quarter. But the Red-coats went nowhere and a fourth down pass was off the

hands of the receiver in the end zone and the Redcoats walked away empty.

Berlin coach John Capod-ice will likely have no fond memories of Veterans Sta-dium as his club’s two losses – this one and a 7-0 shutout at the hands of New Britain on Thanksgiving – took place

there.But the veteran coach was

upbeat after the game.“The kids played hard and

if we get 11 wins every year, I’ll be satisfied,” he said. “Drysdale was maybe better than we thought he was de-fensively. He did a good job.”

Was going down 7-0 right

off the bat a big play?“There was plenty of foot-

ball left,” he said. “You have to keep playing. I thought it was a great high school foot-ball game.”

It was an up-for-grabs game until very late, but it was marred by key turnovers and penalties by both teams.

Brookfield, which lost twice to Newtown – the last one a 42-0 blowout in the South West Conference champion-ship game – had only 29 yards in the first half, but had a 7-0 lead on the pick six.

Norton was 10-for-28 for Berlin for 188 yards, includ-ing two interceptions.

It was Berlin’s eighth trip to a championship game. The Redcoats have lost seven of them with its only win com-ing in 2009, a 46-6 win over Bethel.

Bested

his way to 117 yards on 21 car-ries, while also making his presence known on defense; the Bobcat recorded nine tackles, including four sacks and a forced fumble.

“He played well on de-fense. I think he was a little bit better on defense than we thought. I thought on offense, we did a good job (contain-ing him), but on defense he came hard, he’s a good sized kid, he’s a good ball player,” Capodice said. “They got af-ter it (with their pass rush). They came hard. They did a good job. They pressured our quarterback, and our kids gave great effort.

“That’s the only thing you can control is effort, and I thought our effort was outstanding.”

While playing from behind the entire game, the Red-coats’ determination to re-main competitive was easy to see. Berlin held their op-ponents to only 29 total yards and one first down during the first 24 minutes of play. Over the course of the entire game, Berlin possessed the ball for 11 more minutes than their foes; however, the locals sim-ply couldn’t score.

The game was the final contest for plenty of Berlin’s talented seniors, including Jeremy Eliadas (eight tack-les), Mike Jukonski (eight tackles, one interception), Eric Garcia (62 total yards), and Anthony Sisti (80 total yards).

“Sisti’s been great all sea-son for us. He’s one of our main guys. He’s a guy we’ve had to go to, and he’s a great student-athlete,” Capodice said.

Berlin gained 247 yards on 67 total plays, including 188 yards through the air, while Brookfield recorded 157 to-tal yards. The Redcoats also tallied 12 first downs to the Bobcats’ seven, and held Brookfield to an average of just 3.3 yards per play.

high school’s guidance office Monday.

Many others shared stories of Gozzo on Saturday, each story familiar in its descrip-tion of her. Words like “amaz-ing,” “kind,” and “funny,” could be heard throughout.

Many in the crowd held flower-shaped balloons, a nod to Gozzo’s love of daisies, Welch explained. She asked those carrying balloons to release them after stories had been shared, and slowly the airborne bouquet floated into the night sky. Suddenly, be-hind them, a shooting star ap-peared to pass right through the middle of the mass of bal-loons, to audible gasps across the football field.

“That was amazing,” said one person in the crowd.

“That was her,” said another.

Plan

enough away,” he said.Another complex could

also make central Connecti-cut a destination for sports complexes. FSA in Farming-ton has indoor and outdoor soccer fields and the Berlin complex is planned to have a mix of sports. A Southing-ton complex could focus on sports not supported by the other businesses.

“We’re hoping these com-plexes can complement each other,” Perillo said.

Southington Town Man-ager Garry Brumback said the engineering work and studies planned for the site could be beneficial to any potential developer.

“It may not end up being a sports complex, but the town still needs to invest in that piece of property,” he said. “It isn’t a waste of money by any stretch of the imagination.”

The news of a planned Ber-lin complex “causes us to evaluate what our goals and intentions were with this RFP and selecting Woodard & Curran,” Brumback said.

Southington town officials have faced criticism from some residents who oppose using public funds to prepare a site for a private developer. Perillo said the town will ul-

timately benefit from invest-ment through taxes and local jobs.

Gil Fried, a University of New Haven professor in the sport industries management department, said people are willing to drive for tourna-ments at sportsplexes or for a place to play in the winter. But he doubted whether spending money on a site before there was a committed developer was wise.

“If there was a true de-mand, a developer would have already made a move to build a facility in Southing-ton,” Fried said.

The business itself was a tough one as well.

“I have seen numerous proposed facilities over the years and most do not come through fruition,” Fried said. “Most do not get the neces-sary funds from lenders or

are so debt heavy they can-not survive.”

Perillo disagreed that there weren’t developers ready to build in Southington.

“We have had interest. That’s why we’re doing this,” he said. “We have had people who have tried.”

Two local developers, Lee Dibble and Carl Verderame, have proposed sports com-plexes in recent years. Dib-ble’s plan for a Southington complex included a restau-rant that would’ve served al-cohol and was denied by the Planning and Zoning Com-mission. The property chosen by Verderame for his complex was tied up in a lengthy pro-bate court dispute. The new plan does include a restaurant that would serve alcohol.

By having the town attempt to get its own plan approved by the planning commission,

Perillo said risk is reduced for a potential developer. “Did we get the reputation that we can’t accommodate a devel-oper?” he said.

Southington Town Coun-cil Chairman Michael Riccio, a Republican, said the sports complex plan was to be dis-cussed at the Dec. 8 council meeting. He said he didn’t have enough information to say whether the Berlin com-plex would affect Southing-ton’s plans.

Southington council Mi-nority Leader Chris Palmieri said Berlin’s announcement validated the town’s choice of a sports complex for South-ington. “To me, it’s an indica-tion that there’s a desire or a need,” he said.

Palmieri also said the site work could benefit another business if a sports complex doesn’t pan out.
