Water Superintendent Jerry Lujan
The Town of Bernalillo’s Water Department is tasked with the maintenance, quality, and supply
of drinking water.
Within the Water Department there are a total of 10 people dedicated to staffing the
department. There are two clerks who handle the billing aspect of the department. It is their job
to collect payments, send out notices, and assist constituents in setting up new service. There is
also an administrative assistant who focuses on purchasing supplies necessary for the department
and aiding in calls from constituents about any possible water leaks.
Most importantly are the men who are at the core of the water department. It is their duty to
maintain the water distribution system, read the water meters at properties, report to any
customer requests/complaints on site, and maintain the water valves. They are also responsible
for the installation and servicing the water lines at homes and businesses located within the
Town of Bernalillo. All of these services are applicable within public property of the Town.
Within this core group of men is also one whose responsibility to maintain the Town’s water
supply by verifying that the Safe Drinking Water Act requirements are met with compliance. This
includes collecting and testing samples, maintaining the Town’s four (4) wells, and also
maintaining the Town’s treatment system.
In July of this year, the Town hired Jerry Lujan as the Water Superintendent. It is his duty to
work with the Public Works Director on Town Projects related to the Water Department,
oversee the on-site Water Utility Workers, and dispatch them to water leaks in the town. Jerry
Lujan came into this position with over 10 years experience.

Martha Liebert Library
Our Summer Reading Program was a huge hit for the youth in our community! We had 118 children sign up for the program and we gave many prizes: hats, paddle balls, finger puppets and so much more! We ended our Summer Reading Program by hosting a Pizza Party for our readers. Many trophies and certificates were given out, as well as a brand-new bike, which was won by Justin Garcia!
Our Teen Summer Reading Program was also productive! With 14 teens signing up, 5 of those were very active readers. The teens read a total of 18,635 pages over seven weeks—double the number of pages read last year by the teen group! Weekly drawings for gift certificates to Putt-Putt Golf, Barnes & Noble, and the movies were also earned by the teens. Most impressive of all, Margaret Quintana read a total of 8,398 pages! She earned herself a Nook tablet for the most pages read by one person! Congratulations to all our young readers and we look forward to all your reading next summer!

2ND ANNUAL BERNALILLO HIGHLAND GAMES
September 16th-17th ~ 9am-3pm Rotary Park
Hosted by New Mexico Celtic Athletics
Celtic Heavy Athletics are a group of different athletic events that make up a Highland Games Festival. The athletic events are focused on testing the competitors’ strength and skill using a variety of objects. While they are not directly a martial exercise, the events began as a way to encourage competition between the clans and were used as a substitute for battlefield training by the Scottish during times of occupation when the establishment and maintenance of a large fighting force was forbidden. The thrower must be kilted to participate! The events are the Caber Toss, Weight Over Bar, Hammer Throw, Weight for Distance, Stone Throw and Sheaf Toss.
Spectators are welcome, there is no charge to come out, enjoy the bagpipes and cheer on the athletes! For the more adventurous, you can sign up to participate in the Novice competition on Sunday!
