Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, Reflection
Meanest Mother in the World
I had the meanest Mother in the world. While other kids had candy for breakfast, I had to eat cereal, eggs and toast. While other kids had cake and candy for lunch, I had a sandwich. As you can guess, my dinner
was different from other kids’ dinners, too. My mother insisted on know-ing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were
and what we were doing. I am ashamed to admit it, but she actually had the nerve to break the child labor law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make the beds and learn how to cook. That woman must have stayed awake
nights thinking up things for us kids to do. And she insisted we tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
By the time we became teenagers, she was much wiser and our life be-came more unbearable. None of this tooting the car horn for us to come
running; she embarrassed us to no end by insisting that our friends come to the door to get us.
I forgot to mention that most of our friends were allowed to date at the mature age of 12 or 13, but our old fashioned Mother refused to let us
date until we were 15. She really raised a bunch of squares. None of us was ever in trouble with the law. And who do we have to thank for this?
You’re right, our mean mother. I am trying to raise my children to stand a little straighter and taller and I am secretly tickled to pieces when my children call me mean. I
thank God for giving me the meanest Mother in the world. The world needs more mean Mother’s like mine.
To all those very special women in our lives, we wish you a very Happy and special
Mother’s day on Sunday. We thank each of you, for all you do to love, support,
guide and protect us.

Student Absences
A reminder that information/notification of student absences must be emailed, phoned or sent in by 8:45am on
the day of the absence or before.
St Bernard’s Shines!
It certainly was an exciting few days at St Bernard’s last week when the crew from German TV channel ZDF were
here, on Thursday, to film our school in action, interview us and Professor John Hattie. The day was a wonderful
showcase of our work around Visible Learning. Our students were very articulate about their learning, goals and
what a visible, assessment capable learner is. We were extremely proud of them. Congratulations to Mr Reed,
Miss Bridget and Year 3 /4 R who were featured in the filming and also to Year 3 /4 T who requested a meeting
with Professor Hattie. He was impressed with how our students approach learning and referred to our school’s
success during his interview with ZDF. On Friday, we also hosted twenty staff from Benalla who are just
beginning their Visible Learning Journey. They spent time observing and talking to our staff and students and
were very impressed. St Bernard’s is leading the way!

which clubs they have or might try.

A MOTHER’S HEART
Mother, when we were little children we thought you knew everything.
With the passing of the years we have come to appreciate you for who you are:
a human being like all of us who has good days and bad days, and sometimes gets it wrong.
What sets you apart is your never-failing love for us.
We know you loved us from the first moment you held us in your arms,
and that you have loved us ever since. The sacrifices you lovingly made
while we were growing up can never be repaid. All the mothers of the world are beautiful,
but you, Mother, are the most beautiful of all.
A MOTHER’S JOURNEY
Not long ago they were babies nestled contentedly and trustingly in my arms, totally dependent on me.
In a blink of an eye, they were toddlers running away from me, taking their first tiny steps towards independence. I watched them grow and face their challenges,
sometimes fearfully, sometimes confidently, sometimes successfully, sometimes insufficiently.
I held my breath as they climbed trees, skinned knees, struggled through the lumps and bumps of childhood.
I bandaged wounds, soothed hurts, offered encouragement and comfort when disappointment took over their lives.
I cheered at games, applauded accomplishments, beamed proudly as they received awards and diplomas.
We struggled when they were teens. I felt hurt when they rebelled,
when we argued and failed to understand each other. I stood by, confused and impatient, sometimes angry,
often dreading their decisions as they strove to assert their individuality and independence.
I tried so hard to give them both space and support. It was a tough balancing act,
never really knowing if I was giving them as much space as they needed, never exactly sure if I was giving them as much support as they wanted.
I made mistakes, as all parents do. They made mistakes, as all children do.
But through it all, we managed to gain some understanding and keep on loving. I hope that during all these years
I’ve succeeded in giving them the roots they need to keep them grounded in goodness, kindness and confidence.
I hope that, through all this time together, I’ve managed to give them the wings they need
to soar successfully and fearlessly into the adventure of living. I pray they will have remarkable journeys of their own!
