S. opened its doors in 1973. Our name is derived from C. H. Berner Public School, which dates back to 1872. Berner Trail Junior Public School is committed to meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of our students, in a safe, supportive and caring environment. Our school serves over 350 students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Languages spoken by students in our school include English, English dialect, Tamil, Urdu, Chinese, Tagalog, Hindi, Punjabi, Farsi, and Arabic. Diagnostic Kindergarten Berner Trail has a Diagnostic Kindergarten class (JK/SK) for students placed via the Central IPRC process. Many opportunities are provided for the class to integrate with the regular kindergarten class at various times during the day and for subjects such as physical education, computer applications and library. Support is provided for the students' individualized program from the teacher, educational assistant and the special needs assistant as well as visits from the occupational and speech and language therapists.

Morning Snack ProgramBerner Trail currently delivers a morning snack to students who wish to register in the program.  Theprogram focuses on providing healthy foods which follow the guidelines set out by the CanadianFood Guide.  We wish to promote healthy eating practices and in turn create healthy lifestyles for allof our students.

After School Recreation CareAfter School Recreation Care is offered through Parks andRecreation.  Registered students participate in a variety of activitiesafter school (3:15 p.m. - 6 p.m.) carried out by the Parks andRecreation staff.  The ARC program creates an environment thatfosters good health, confidence, friendship and fun! Junior Learning Disabilities ProgramOur Junior (Grades 4-6) Learning Disabilities Intensive SupportClass is part of the special education programs at our school.Students are placed in these classes through our Central IPRCdecision and placement process.  Individualized student programsare supported by the teacher and the educational assistant.

Student Life - Where You Belong

Our school offers a variety of co-curricular activities thatprovide students with additional opportunities to enhancetheir social / emotional development, provide leadership ,build teamwork  as well as provide a chance to learn a newskill.  Some of the activities are as follows:  Primary andJunior Choir, Folkdancing, Cross Country, Indoor Soccer,Outdoor Soccer, Track and Field, Junior Basketball, BoysBook Club, Environmental Eco-Team, Recycling Club, OfficeHelpers, Library Helpers, Safety Patrollers, Student Council,Silver Birch and Blue Spruce Reading Clubs and HouseLeague activities.  Students are also given a number ofopportunities to expand their experiences andlearning through a variety of presentations, school eventsand class trips (e.g., Outdoor Education, Scientists in theSchool, License to Learn, performances at Music Fest andFolkdance Jamboree).

What Sets Us Apart

Our school has a number of programs or workshops that runsimultaneously with our regular class programs throughoutthe school year that provide additional opportunities forlearning.  Scientists in the School, Kindergarten Education, Early Literacy program, Arts for Youth and Children,Scarborough Outdoor Education School, Hillside, TorontoZoo - Operation Conservation.  Also, our school participatesas a Toronto Schools on the Move, partners with BigBrothers/ Big Sisters and works with our Police SchoolLiaison officer to deliver programs to our students.  We carryout two fund raising drives yearly and support our local foodbank through our food drive.  Hearing / Vision screeningopportunities are provided as well as the opportunity toparticipate in the Student Medic Alert program.

Parent and Community Engagement

Our students have the opportunity to visit the Malvern Public libraryand Malvern skating arena as part of our class trips.  Ourcommunity Police Liaison officer delivers presentations to some ofour classes and each year trains our safety patrollers.  We areappreciative of our School Council which meets at least four times ayear and who are actively involved in raising funds for our schoolthrough an annual bake sale.  We continually welcome our parentand community volunteers to our school and appreciate the supportthey lend to our students, staff and our school.  

Imagine a TDSB where all schools share a common core set of characteristics. They arecommunity-driven and focused on teaching and learning. Students and parents have a wide variety ofopportunities and there are enough students in every school to increase program choices. Imagine there is a clear focus on achieving student success and every student is engaged, has a voice,access to a caring adult and the opportunity to develop their full potential. Here at the TDSB our focus is on student achievement, parent and community engagement and financialstability.
