l l . 45MX i lASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONSYour Beseler 45MX l l enlarger requires very l i t t leassembly, so i t should only take a few minutes toget set up to make large, sharp pr ints. You wi l l needwire cut ters to aid in unpacking the enlarger and a#2 or #3 Phi l l ips head screwdriver to assemble i t .The parts bag fastened to the enlarger head con-tains the fo l lowing i tems:

Assemble the enlarger as fo l lows:

A. Remove the enlarger from the packing carton.You wi l l f ind that the enlarger head is in an inverted(shipping) posi t ion and secured in place withstraps. Do not remove the straps unt i l you have f ul lyassembled the enlarger.

B. Place the enlarger on i ts back on a sui table f latsurf ace.

C. Using two pan head screws, attach the r ightbaseboard angle to the enlarger base (see Fig. 3) .Insert screws hand t ight. Repeat the procedure onthe lef t s ide.

I I I . OPERATIONALFAMILIARIZATIONThe Beseler 45MX l l is composed of s ix basic sys-tems i l luminat ion system, elevat ion controlassembly, negat ive stage assembly, lens stage as-sembly, d istort ion t i l t assembly and chassis - eachof which is descr ibed below.

E. Remove baseboard from l iner and place onbaseboard angles. Make sure the countersunk holesin the baseboard face up.

F. Insert the four f lat head screws into the base-board and hand t ighten. After al l angle and base-board screws are in place, t ighten f i rmlywith screw-d r iver.

G. Use the wire cutters to remove the straps fromthe enlarger head. Slowly pivot the head to i tsoperat ional posi t ion.

H. l l luminat ion System - lnstruct ions for instal l ingthe Dichro 45 Color Computer and the Point L ightSource are contained in their respect ive manuats.The procedure for instal l ing the Condenser Lamp-house is as fol lows:

1. Make sure the latches on the support stage arepul led forward (Fig. a).

2. Remove condenser lamphouse from cartonand place on support stage, making sure thebottom of the condenser sl ips into the openingof the support stage.

3. Push back latches to secure the condenserlamphouse assembly.

4. Insert lamphouse plug into "enlarger" out let onyour t imer.

lamphouse and the condenser assembly withintegral f i l ter compartment.

2. Dichro 45 Color Computer, a solid-state,microprocessor-based dichroic f i l ter color-head, incorporat ing sel f-contained, stabi l izedpower supply and cool ing system. Can be usedwith or without condenser assembly. Detai lsful ly explained in separate manual.

3. Point Light Source System (lamphouse andtransformer), for extremely br i l l iant i l lumina-t ion at high contrast. Requires condenserassembly. Detai ls ful ly explained in separatemanual.

The condenser assembly, which is used with al lthree i l luminat ion systems, houses the heat absorb-ing glass and the lenses which focus the l ight raysto produce Beseler 's exclusive "Cone-of-Light"i l luminat ion. Also incorporated in this assembly isthe color f i l ter compartment and i ts f i l ter holder, forsupport ing color pr int ing f i l ters and variable con-trast f i l ters.

The lamphouse support stage readi ly accom-modates the condenser assembly or the colorhead.The condenser or colorhead is securely fastened tothe support stage by the support stage latches.

B. Elevation Control AssemblyThe elevator motor/control box affixed to the en-larger carr iage can be used to raise or lower the en-larger head to the desired magnif icat ion level. Athree-posit ion momentary switch is used to act ivatethe motor; top posit ion to raise the head; bottomposit ion to lower; and middle posit ion is off . Stoppins at the upper and lower ends of the carr iage'svert ical t ravel automatical ly throw the motor switchinto the off posi t ion. The manual elevat ion knob onthe motor box provides f ine elevat ion controlwhenextremely smal l changes in magnif icat ion are de-sired.

The elevat ion scale, on the r ight s ide of the en-larger frame, aids in determining the enlarger headheight when addit ional enlargements of the samesize are desired at a later date. The motor switchacts as the scale indicator.

The grounded convenience out let on the motor boxprovides electr ic i ty for the lamphouse, color head,Resistrol or t imer, depending on the power hookupsequence being employed.

C. Negalive Stage AssemblyThe Negat ive Stage Assembly accommodates theopt ional negat ive carr ier, Negatrans or Negaf lat .The negat ive stage is opened by pushing down-ward on the negat ive stage lever. Locat ing pins on

IV. OPERATION GUIDELINESThe correct size negative carrier, appropriate lensand negative stage position must be selected tomatch the negative size from which you wish toprint. Table I shows which lens and which negative

the under side of the negat ive carr ier, Negatrans orNegaf lat aid in posit ioning on the negat ive stage.

The posit ion of the negat ive stage relat ive to thecondenser lenses is important when using the con-denser lamphouse. The negat ive size indicater andnegat ive stage lock can help you determine andhold in place the sett ing to match your negat ive.

D. Lens StageThe lensboard with lens attached (both avai lableseparately from your Beseler dealer) is held in placeby the lens stage. Note that the bottom of the lensstage has two retaining str ips, at the front and therear, which hold the lens board in place. With theback edge of the lens board t i l ted upward, insertthe back edge of the board into the groove abovethe rear retaining str ip. Push the lens board backinto the groove and raise the front edge unt i l theboard is level. A leaf spr ing in the rear groove wi l lpush the lens board into the groove above the frontretaining str ip and hold i t in posi t ion. Make surethat the board is securely held at both front andrear. To remove the board, reverse the procedure.

The lens stage can be raised or lowered on thefocusing rack by turning the lef t or r ight focusingknob. The lens stage brake can be t ightened to holdthe stage in the focused posit ion.

The lens stage pivots 15o to the lef t or r ight to aid incorrecting distortion in a negative or to create in-terest ing effects. The pivot ing act ion is used in con-junct ion with the distort ion t i l t assembly, explainedin paragraph (F) of this sect ion.

The accessory f i l ter holder is af f ixed below the lensstage, and accommodates red safety, variable con-trast, soft focus and other filters up to 23/8" square.Remember to swing f i l ter holder out of the l ightpath when f i l t rat ion is not required.

E. Chassis AssemblyThis assembly consists of the baseboard, t r iangulartruss frame and the carr iage, on which the enlargerhead is mounted. The tr iangular truss construct ionhelps provide sharp pr ints by vir tual ly el iminat ingvibrat ion from the enlarger structure. The carr iagemoves lateral ly, which: permits the simultaneoususe of two 8"x10" easels; allows only part of animage to be shown on an easel fixed in place; orassists in locat ing the image on the easel whenusing the distort ion control feature.

F. Distortion Tilt AssemblyThe ent ire enlarger head may be t i l ted up to 15o lef tor r ight when i t is desired to correct or al leviatedistort ion in the negat ive. The distort ion t i l t mayalso be used to create distort ion for unusualeffects.

V. ADDITIONALAPPLICATIONSA. Color EnlargementsYour Beseler 45MX l l can help you make beaut i fulcolor enlargements, using ei ther the Dichro 45Color Computer (catalog #8282) or the Cotor byBeseler Color Print ing Fi l ters (catatog #8933). In-struct ions for using ei ther of these color pr int ingmethods are packed in their respect ive cartons.

B. Repetitive PrintingThe 45MX l l enlarger offers a host of features thatmakes repet i t ive pr intmaking, ei ther dur ing a s inglesession or at a later date, m uch easier. When makingseveral consecut ive copies of a pr int , i t is suggestedthat you set the focus lock (Figure 1, i tem 5) toensure sharp pr int af ter pr int .

The magnif icat ion scale (Figure 2, i tem 22) on theenlarger f rame can help you dupl icate your resultsat a later session. After you create a pr int withwhich you are sat isf ied, you should not only recordthe f-stop and exposure t ime, but the reading be-hind the motor switch on the magnif icat ion scale.(The increments on the scale aretor referenceonly,and do not indicate actual magnif icat ions.) The nextt ime you wish to dupl icate th is pr int , s imply raise orlower the enlarger head to the same reference pointand focus the image. Of course the negat ive stagesett ing and the lens size must be the same asor ig inal ly used.

C. Distortion ControlDistort ion correct ions, such as converging paral le ll ines in archi tectural photographs, can be readi lymade on the baseboard with the 45MX l l enlarger.You can get a sharply focused image throughout thepicture area or create special distorted effects byusing the distort ion control adjustment, in con-junct ion with the pivot ing lens stage.

In order to control (or create) the distort ion andachieve overal l image focus, the negat ive stage, thelens stage and the easel must be arranged in such away that their surface planes cast imaginary l inesthat would converge at a common point . Figure 5

i l lustrates th is pr inciple. You could use three verylong straightedges to adjust the angles so that thel ines from the three planes converge, but themethod out l ined below is probably most pract ical .

1. Set the magnif icat ion and roughly focus theprojected image.

2. Use a box or open end wrench to loosen thepivot ing 1s7,u" head) and locking (%0") bol ts( i tems 47 and 70 on the exploded view).

3. Pivot the ent i re enlarger head (Figure 6) unt i lthe desired degree of distort ion or control isachieved. Tighten both bol ts to minimizevibra-t ion.

4. Simultaneously pivot the lens stage and adjustthe focus knob to br ing the corrected imageinto focus.t

Once you have f in ished pr int ing distort ion con-trol led images, you should return the lens stage andthe enlarger head to their or ig inal posi t ions. Thelens stage has a detent which wi l l hold the stageperpendicular when you pivot back to the or ig inalposi t ion. To make sure the enlarger head is per-pendicular to the baseboard, fo l low the al igmentprocedure in Sect ion Vl .D. Oversize PrintsFor enlargements exceeding the size possible onthe baseboard, the 45MX l l can be adapted for pro-ject ion through the base frame. Simply remove thefour Phi l l ips screws holding the baseboard in place,remove the baseboard and place the enlarger ontwo tables, leaving an open space between thetables to al low the projected image to pass throughthe frame and to the f loor. Clamp the enlarger tothe tables to ensure opt imal stabi l i ty . Magnif ica-t ions can be var ied by using the elevat ion controlor propping up your easel on a box orothersui tablelevel surface.

E. Lateral Adjustment of the Enlarger HeadA unique feature of the 45MX l l enlarger is an adjust-ment al lowing side to s ide movement of the enlargerhead on the carr iage tubes (Figure 7). This lateral

VI. ALIGNMENTPROCEDURESYour Beseler 45MX l l is inspected and completelyal igned before i t leaves the factory. However, im-proper handl ing and the use of the distort ion con-trol assembly may require real ignment of certaincomponenrs.A. Carr iage Al ignmentRough treatment whi le movingthe45MX l l f rom onelocat ion to another might cause a carr iage gear tojump a tooth on the elevat ion rack, knocking thecarr iage out of a l ignment. Correct as fo l lows:

1. Remove i l luminat ion system and condenserassembly.

2. Remove the lower stop pin ( i tem 164 on theexploded view) from the frame.

3. Slowly run the carr iage assembly down the

movement is useful when i t is desired to enlargeonly a port ion of a negat ive wi thout disturbing theposit ion of the easel. To operate the lateral adjust-ment, loosen the carr iage lock knob ( i tem '101 on theexploded view drawing) and move the enlarger headto the desired posi t ion. For most other pr int ingoperat ions, the carr iage should be located at thecenter of the carr iaqe tubes.

4. Hold the carr iage in both hands and l i f t unt i lthe carr iage r ides the track evenly; that is, sothe gears are evenly engaged on the racks.

5. Push up motor switch so carr iage r ides up.6. Place a tr iangle or carpenter 's square in con-

tact with the baseboard and the lef t and r ights ides of the lower counterbalance assembly tomake sure the counterbalance assemblv isparal lel to the baseboard.

7. Re-attach lower stop pin.

l f the carr iage appears to be paral lel to the base-board at low magnif icat ion and not at h igh, i t may

be necessary to adjust the rear support struts.Facing the enlarger, i f the r ight s ide of the carr iageassembly is lower than the lef t , adjust the lef t strutas fol lows:

1. Remove the two screws f rom the foot of thestrut ( i tem 158) and turn the foot ( i tem 157)clockwise at least one ful l turn.

2. Check the al ignment. l f addi t ional adjustmentis required, turn the foot once more.

3. Re-insert and t ighten screws.

CAUTION: l f the struts are adjusted unevenly, a"twist ing" of the ent ire f rame assembly may result .This wi l l cause uneven operat ion of the carr iageassembly in the elevat ion racks and this mighteventual ly wear out the gear racks and/or theelevat ion motor.

l f the lef t s ide of the carr iage assembly is lower thanthe r ight , adjust the r ight strut in the same manner asdescribed above.

B. Distortion Control Assembly AlignmentEach t ime you use the distort ion control assemblyand wish to return to perpendicular for normal pr int-ing, the negat ive stage must be real igned:

1. Do not t ighten the pivot and locking bol ts af teryou have pivoted the enlarger head back to i tsvert ical posi t ion.

2. Open the negat ive stage and insert a piece ofglass or other absolutely f lat materal largeenough to overhang the sides of the negat ivestage. Close the negat ive stage.

3. Lower the enlarger unt i l the negat ive stage isapproximately 24 inches above the baseboard'

4. Use a straightedge or carpender 's square atleast 24 inches long to measure the distance ofthe lef t and r ight s ides of the negat ive stagefrom the baseboard (Figure 8).

5. Pivot the enlarger head on the distort ion con-trol assembly unt i l the distance from the r ightside of the negat ive stage to the baseboard isthe same as the lef t .

6. Tighten the locking and pivot bol ts.

C. Lens Stage AdiustmentWhen the lens stage is in the "zero" or centeredposi t ion, the lef t and r ight s ides should be an equaldistance from the baseboard, as measured with astraightedge, carpenter 's square or tr iangle' l f theyare not, fol low the Procedure below:

1. Loosen the two slotted lens stage screws andpivot the lens stage unt i l the lef t and r ight s idesare equal distances from the baseboard.

2. Tighten the screws.

D. Counterbalance Spring Adiustmentl f the elevat ion motor stal ls at the top or bottom ofi ts t ravel , the counterbalance spr ing tension mustbe adjusted. NOTE: Al l adjustments are performedon the lef t s ide of the enlarger, facing the front.

1. Loosen, but do not remove, clamp screw ( i tem169) at rear of lower tube.

2. Firmly grasp lower tube in r ight hand and re-move screw ( i tem 170) from front of tube.NOTE: There wi l l be considerable counter-c lockwise spr ing act ion in the tube.

3. l f the enlarger runs upward too slowly, increasethe counterbalance tension by rotat ing thelower tube counterclockwise at least two com-plete revolut ions, and re- insert screw.

q. i t tne enlarger runs downward too slowly in thelast four to f ive inches of t ravel, decreasecounterbalance spring tension by rotat inglower tube one revolut ion in a c lockwise direc-t ion, and re- insert locking screw.

5. Make sure locking screw is in place and thetube clamping screw ist ightened before check-ing for proper motor oPerat ion.

VII . MAINTENANCEThe Beseler 45MX l l enlarger is designed for ef-f ic ient , re l iable operat ion wi th minimal mainten-ance. The only two regular maintenance operat ionsthat may need to be performed are changing lampsand keeping the opt ical elements free of dust.

A. Lamp Changing Procedure1. Make sure lamphouse cord is disconnected

from i ts power supply.2. Al low the lamp cap and burned out lamp to cool

before attempting to change lamp.3. Loosen lamp cap knob and l i f t lamp cap as-

sembly clear of lamphouse.4. Unscrew lamp and replace with Beselercatalog

#8100 (PH212).5. Reinstal l lamp cap, t ighten knob and reconnect

lamphouse cord to power supply.

B. Cleaning Optical ElementsThe heavy-duty Pl iof i lm dust cover (catalog #8129)for the 45MX l l wi l l help keep your enlarger f ree ofdust. Should the condenser lenses require clean-ing, fol low the procedure below:

1. First use a blower brush, f i l tered compressedair or a cloth such as the Color by Beseler Ant i-Static Cloth (catalog #8956) to clean off any

COLOR PRINTING FILTER SET (Catalog #8933)Color by Beseler six- inch square f i l ters can bereadi ly t r immed to easi ly s l ip into the f i l ter holder ofthe 45MX l l enlarger. The complete set of 24 f i l terscovers f i l t rat ion ranges of 2.5 to 157.5 in cyan,magenta and yel low. An ul tra-violet f i l ter and two 50red f i l ters are included. The f i l ters are made ofMylaro and are highly resistant to heat, facing andscratches.

2-STEP COLOR CHEMISTRY (Catalog #8940)Only two solut ions - no pre-wet or intermediate

surface dust.2. l f the lenses are st i l l d ir ty, they should be re-

moved and careful ly c leaned. NOTE: The con-denser lenses are del icate and should be re-moved only when absolutely necessary.

3. Loosen the three lamphouse screws ( i tem 2 onexploded view) and remove lamphouse fromcondenser assembly.

4. Remove the three Phi l l ips head screws ( i tem13) located around the top perimeter of thecondenser. Place aside screws, spacers andnuts.

5. Hold the heat absorber glass in place and care-ful ly turn the condenser assembly on i ts side,al lowing the heat absorber to slowly sl ide fromthe cast ing.

6. Li f t out the spacer r ing and the upper con-denser lens.

7. There is no need to remove the lower con-denser, as al l surfaces are now accessible forcleaning with lens t issue or ant i -stat ic cloth.

8. Reassemble by reversing the procedure.

NOTE: The upper and lower condensers are notinterchangeable.
