Aropa Airport (or Kieta Airport) is an airport in Kieta, Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. Aropa

airport was re-opened in December 2014 by the Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O’Neill after it was closed for

25 years. The opening of the Kieta (Aropa) Airport is another vital part of Papua New Guinea’s national

infrastructure that will create new opportunities for the men, women and children of Bougainville.

The Need

After destruction of the former airport during the civil war in 1988, Red Sea Housing Services (RSHS) was

required to construct and design an airport terminal for the region of Bougainville including utilities,

amenities and housing for managers/engineers. At this remote location, the project also required to

have Generators, Ablution Block, Site Engineer Office, Storage Shed, Residential Home and a Two Man

Sleeper.

The Project

The Red Sea Housing Services (RSHS) team of experts were able to design, manufacture, ship, and

commission a remote airport terminal for the Bougainville region, despite the difficult logistical

challenges posed by the area. To ensure the longevity and strength of the terminal constructed, RSHS

utilized its Site Master 25 Series was utilised for the internal wall structure and steel fabricated tilt wall

system for the external construction, making this a very strong and durable construction design. The

project also included Generators, Ablution Block, Site Engineer Office, Storage Shed, Residential Home

and a Two Man Sleeper.
