James Gunn was born and raised in St. Louis,Missouri, to Leota and James Francis Gunn. He isfrom a large Catholic family, with Irish and Czechancestry. His father and his uncles were alllawyers. He has been writing and performing aslong as he can remember. He began making8mm films at the age of twelve. Many of thesewere comedic splatter films featuring hisbrothers being disemboweled by zombies. Heattended Saint Louis University High (SLUH)college preparatory school but later dropped outof college to pursue a rock and roll career.

However, his professional career started as ascreenwriter in the mid-90s. After this, he startedacting as a director with Slither, a horror-comedy film.Some of his notable works are Guardians of the Galaxy,Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and The Suicide Squad. James Gunn has four brothers, all of whom are in theentertainment industry. His brother, Patrick Gunn, is aSenior VP at Artisan Entertainment, the companyresponsible for distributing (and the marketingcampaign of) The Blair Witch Project (1999). Hisbrother, Brian Gunn, is a screenwriter who works inpartnership with their cousin Mark Gunn.
