While followers of this lifestyle arenecessarily strict, this devotion does indeed complicate options for going out to eat, despite the awareness of the issuecatching international attention. That said, for a gastronomically-varied city like Montreal, it’s challenging, but far fromimpossible. After some research, we found a number of great restaurants who are considerate of a gluten-free diet andwho serve a veritable smorgasbord of delectable gluten-free eats. Aux Vivres

This incredibly popular vegan restaurant on famous St-Laurent Boulevard in the Plateau prides itself on its ethically-sourced, organic and fully vegan ingredients, so it’s natural (pun intended) that they would also serve gluten-freeofferings to suit all palates. This Montreal staple is known for its fresh, original menu, and as one of the only vegan spotsin the city, you have to expect a bit of a lineup, especially during weekends. Arepera

This well-established South American restaurant in the heart of the Plateau neighborhood serves the Venezuelan versionof tapas (small, appetizer-like portions of which you order many) and has far more gluten-free options than your averageeatery. From bean dishes to many delicious meat options, to a blinding collection of cheese-and-veggies combinations,this place is a gluten-free paradise.

Crudessence

This renowned raw food restaurant in the middle of downtown is an obvious contender for celiac-disease sufferers, as itserves only organic “living” foods (raw veggies, beans, smoothies, etc.) in a variety of ways each more delicious than thenext. They offer soups, smoothies, salads and a variety of desserts as well. Plus, they cater, so you can haveCrudessence’s delectable gluten-free flavours at your event.

Boston Pizza

Boston Pizza might seem like a surprising option, given that pizza is usually very flour-heavy and that larger chains don’toften cater to special diets. However, The Big BP proudly offers a gluten-wise menu, which is even on the first page oftheir website, much to the awe and delight of pizza fans everywhere. While there aren’t that many locations in Montrealsadly, those in the LaSalle neighborhood can nevertheless visit and enjoy their celiac-friendly pie and toppings.

Maison Boulud

If you’re in the mood for fine dining, this gourmet restaurant near the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, embedded in the RitzCarlton is a great downtown choice. If its posh location didn’t hint at it enough, this place doesn’t spare any expense onlocal, judiciously-selected ingredients which are carefully prepared into every signature dish. While they don’t officiallyhave a gluten-free menu, the staff is knowledgeable and can suggest a number of delectable items from their selectionthat are (such as their numerous meat/vegetable combinations). Their know-how about this specific sensitivity makes it ago-to place for many celiac-sufferers.
