Select Master of Ceremonies Plan Program Work with Activity and Decoration committees Use the theme selected by the steering committee Appoint Welcoming committee Send thank you notes Print programs Remember when putting a program together make sure that it flows smoothly. This may also be a good time to have an Arrow of Light or Graduation into Scouting, depending on time limits. Try not to go longer than 2 hours. Decoration Committee Blue & Gold balloons, crepe paper, napkins, plates, place mats, utensils, confetti, birthday candles, poster board awards, flowers Food Committee Current food prices and budget should determine menus. A well-balanced meal should include meat, vegetables, salads, bread, dessert, and a beverage or water.

Things to think about when planning a Blue & Gold Banquet The dinner may be at a restaurant, catered, potluck, or buffet style. The meal is important, but even more important is the warm, congenial atmosphere created as families enjoy each other’s company. Involve as many people as possible on the various committees. Try not to overload the den leaders, who will be busy working with their dens. For the banquet to be successful, planning must begin early-at least two or three months in advance. If you fail to plan you plan to fail. Most important is to remember the Cub Scout program is for the Cub Scout and families. Check our the four different theme ideas from each roundtable section on the following 8 pages.

Dino Days Blue and Gold Banquet

Invitations Have a picture of a dinosaur chasing a caveman with the caption “Blue and Gold Banquet - be there or be extinct!” Along with the date, time, and location on the invitation; include the food assignment you need that scout to bring. (i.e. baby carrots)

Menu & Serving Table Decorations Decorate table with toy dinosaurs and with large labels that say Carnivores, Herbivores, and Omnivores. Additional label ideas will be given with the menu.

Main Dish - Place Carnivores label and carnivore dinosaurs by your main dish. Serve chili, Sloppy Joes, or chicken legs.

Side Dish - Place Herbivores label and herbivore dinosaurs here. Serve carrots, celery, broccoli, oranges, grapes, or salad.

Dessert: Place Omnivore label by the desserts. Bug in Amber - Make individual servings of orange Jell-O in clear cups with a gummy worm or bug in it.

Grubs in Tar - Make individual servings of chocolate pudding. Top with crumbled chocolate cookie (Oreo) crumbs and a gummy worm.

Build Your Own Volcano - Set up like a dessert bar with one or two displays. Have plain cupcakes with toppings in different bowls. Toppings ideas are sugar ice cream cones, chocolate pudding or frosting, red pull and peel licorice, candy rocks, green colored coconut, and whipped cream.

Dining Table Decorations Table Cloth and Runner - Use a simple base table cover (butcher paper or cheap plastic table cloths) for the base of your tables. Use a roll of brown packing paper (ask for remnants from a packing/shipping store) or butcher paper as a table runner. On the table runner, take a black marker and draw some simple cave drawings periodically down the table. Leave a hand full of crayons for people to make their own cave drawings.

Center Pieces - Take a simple caveman picture printed on cardstock and have the scouts color it. Cut out the caveman and a cardstock backer for the caveman. Cut out the face and attach a picture of the scout where the face would go. Glue the picture and the backer together with a bamboo skewer in the middle and stick the skewer into a

piece of foam so it will stand. To decorate the foam base, give the scouts a piece of brown paper from a paper bag. Have them distress the paper with brown paint /ink and a sponge or by crunching it into a ball. Next, have them draw cave drawings with a marker on the paper. Wrap the paper around the piece of foam. Optional: you can top off the foam with moss.

Flag Ceremony Introductory Statement - Growing up is an adventure. Every day brings new and exciting things into our lives. Scouting opens many new doors for boys as they develop in faith, character, personal fitness, and citizenship. As we salute the United States flag, let’s think about all the adventures that are ahead of us, and silently promise to do our best. Let us stand and pledge allegiance to our flag.

Run-ons / skits Q: What do you get when you put a bomb and a dinosaur together? A: Dino-mite

Q: What kind of materials do dinosaurs use for the floor of their homes? A: Rep Tiles

Q: What do you get when dinosaurs crash their cars? A: Tyrannosaurus wrecks!

Awards Use molding clay and shape it into a rock base. Take seashells, toy bugs, and leaves and press them into the clay to create fossils. Stick a skewer into the base with a flag/sign that says “You Rock!”

Cheers Hootin’ Hadrosaur – Put your hand on your head to make a crest and make a loud hooting sound.

Tyrannosaurus Stomp – Make your arms small with two clawed fingers like a T-Rex. Stomp really loud. When the cheer conductor gives the cue, roar!

Activities Caveman Photo Shoot – Have a large picture of cavemen with the faces cut out or make a fun background and have caveman props (club, spear, animal hides) for people to use.

Choose a Rock – Have a selection of rocks for the scouts to choose from. Have them take the rock home and find out what kind of rock it is: igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic. Have them bring the rock and their answer back to a following pack or den meeting.

Star Warped Theme ‐ Cubmaster Section Ideas & Planning This theme is a mash‐up of all things sky‐ward and space borne. The sky is literally the limit here, use some

To keep things light remember to use plots and images from SciFi that uplift and encourage cub scout core values

such as Compassion, Cooperation, Courage, Resourcefulness, Respect, and Responsibility. Above all present

DecorationsThis is a very simple sky map found at

http://mhhe.com/physsci/astronomy/arny_3e_update/constellation_

quiz/assets/constel_tutmod.html . Maps of the sky or our Moon make

good educational and conversational decorations.

Our galaxy is known as the “Milky Way”. Our planet is found within

the “Solar” system (or planetary system of Sol – the name of our

closest star, also known as the Sun). Images or models of these can be

used on the walls, doors, or as centerpieces.

Cheer Softer side of Darth Vader Cheer: Come to the dark side, we have cookies!

Food Menu could include: “Re‐hydrated Asteroids”‐Meat Balls or “Re‐hydrated Astro‐Bird”‐Chicken, “Filtered Moon

Water”‐Lemonade or label any beverage as “Rocket Fuel”, “Intergalactic Greens”‐Tossed Salad, “Meteors”‐

Rolls, “Space Dust”‐Flavored Rice, “Lunar Pie”‐Chocolate pudding with crushed Oreos on top. Have fun with colors,

for example green aliens, red Martian dirt, and blue comet dust.

Games & Activities An online International Space Station tracker can be found at http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/tracking/. If you

are savvy enough to plan your Blue & Gold around an I.S.S. view window. At the very least use this information to

inform the boys of the next view windows so they can see the I.S.S. pass overhead firsthand.

A jetpack or Manned Maneuvering Unit (M.M.U.) can be made from two empty 2Liter bottles. Here is a link to a

very good example http://www.doodlecraft.blogspot.com/2012/04/super‐sci‐fi‐rocket‐fueled‐jet‐pack.html.

Kids love face painting. And what fun it would be to see a whole pack of little aliens with stereotypical green faces.

Pin the Solar system on the Milky Way. Play this game just as you would pin the tail on the donkey, but use a

poster of our galaxy instead. Find the location of our Solar

system on the poster and have the boys blindfolded try to

come closest to the correct position.

WEBELOS - CUB CLUEINVITATIONS (See District Website for the invitation printables)

• Make a half sheet manila folder with the words “TOP SECRET” on it. Slip a case file with the information on it about where to meet for their top secret adventure (Blue and Gold) into the folder.

• Use the double sided invitation printable and attach the invitation to an inexpensive magnifying glass or other piece of “detective” hardware.

• Make your Top Secret invitation interactive and write a message in secret code for the kids to decode. • Example 1: Make a long strip of paper by cutting a piece of printer paper into strips and taping them

together end to end. Wrap the strip of paper around a paper towel role in a coil. Now write the mes-sage across the strips of paper. Unwrap the paper from the tube and deliver the messages to your boys with instructions on how to decode the clue to the mystery.

• Example 2: make a secret code, use a Wing Ding font or use Morse Code (sent with a code break-er). Write the invitation in code so the boys have to figure out what letter each of the symbols are to decode the invitation.

GAMESPre-Opener: Guess Who GameCollect baby pictures of the boys or the leaders to post on the wall. Number each picture. Have a list of names for each boy. Have the boys “Guess Who” belongs to each baby picture by putting the right number next to the names.Detective Fingerprinting Station (See District Website for the fingerprint type cards)Get fingerprinting cards from the police station or use 3x5 cards to take each child’s fingerprints. There are 3 basic types of fingerprints; arch, loop and whorl. Have an example of each on the wall and have the kids figure out what kind of fingerprint they have. They can put their name on their card and put it under the example that matches their fingerprint type to see how many of them have each kind.Suspect LineupMake a measuring wall with lines and feet marks like they use for mug shots. Have a plaque for them to hold that has information like Pack #, Blue and Gold and date. Take pictures of the boys to give to them later as a souvenir.CUB CLUE (See District Website for the Cub Clue cards and Detective Notebooks)Setup: Print enough Cub Detective Notebook pages to have one for each child with the badge side on the back of the notebook. Print 2 copies of the backs of the Cub Clue cards. Print the front side of the cards on the opposite side of the backs. Cut cards. Randomly pull out a Suspect card, a Crime Scene Card and an Evidence card to create the case file and place them in an envelope where the boys can’t see them, to be held by the Cubmaster. Shuffle remaining cards and give each of your 6 den leaders 2 cards. If you don’t have 6 den leaders, give each one more cards or utilize parents. Give each boy a Cub Detective Notebook with their name in the white space of the detec-tive badge for easy reference when one is misplaced. Have a pencil for each child playing.Play: Each child moves from witness (den leaders) to witness asking a question similar to: “Did you see Bucky Beaver with a Lantern at the Wigwam?” until they have eliminated all but the three cards in the case file the Cub-master has. When a den leader is asked they should show all the cards they have that match the question. They should only ask one question of one den leader at a time so others have a chance to ask their questions as well. They need to move on to another den leader or go to the end of the line for that den leader to ask another question. How To Win: When they are ready to make a guess they can go to the Inspector (Cubmaster or a parent) to solve the case. They need to get all three parts of the case correct to earn their Ace Detective certificate. If they don’t get it right, they need to go back to asking den leaders questions until they figure out were they made a mistake. If the game goes quickly, re-shuffle and play again! If it is going a little slower than you would like, get their parents to help them figure it out.Extra: Have the inspector in a separate room that represents headquarters. For security reasons, have a creative way to get to the Inspector. Have the inspectors assistant outside the door in sunglasses. Have a hand scanner (a paper with a hand print on it and the words “SCAN TO ENTER” that they have to touch. Have red string rep-resenting security laser beams strung all over through a line of chairs that they have to weave under, over and through to get to the inspector.
