Instructions

This application was created to find your best place to live. It was designed to use

published criteria from Sperling's Best Places, which is located at:

http://www.bestplaces.net/default.aspx.

When opening the workbook, you will be asked if you want to enable macros. Click on theEnable Macros button.

Go to Sperling's Best Places web site, enter the name of the City, Town or Zip Code in

the search box and click on the Search button, which will then present you with a list of the matches to the name you entered. Select the location you want, by clicking on the

name.

Open the Data tab in the workbook. Go to Row 5. You will notice that row 5 is shaded

yellow. Enter a location that you are totally familiar with, i.e., where you are currentlyliving. This provides you with a reference point for evaluating the other locations. Moving

across the spreadsheet, enter the required information found on Sperling's web site for

this location. Do NOT enter information into the cells that are shaded gray - these are

automatically calculated.

Go to the bottom of Column A and enter the next number in sequence. Moving across the

spreadsheet, enter the required information found on Sperling's web site for the locationyou have requested. Do NOT enter information into the cells that are shaded gray. After

entering this information, it would be a good time to save the workbook, so you do not

lose the information you have just entered.

If you are looking for multiple locations, repeat the previous step for each desired

location.

Once you have entered the information from Sperling's Best Places, open the Criteria Tab

in the workbook. Here you will provide information that will be used to prioritize (based

upon your requirements) the locations on the Data tab. Some of the cells (in the User

Entered Criteria section) will be populated with US Average information if you leave

them blank.

Hovering over a cell in the top portion of the Criteria tab will provide you additional

information, specific to what you should enter into the cell.

In the lower portion of the Criteria tab, criteria for weighting the various factors (cost of home, available income after expenses, comfort index, health care and crime) is

provided. You identify how important the factor is (in relation to the others) by entering aweight between 1 and 100. The total of the 5 weights should add up to 100%.

Ideally, you should not have to change the other columns to the right of the importance

column. However, it does provide an explanation of the variables that are used to

calculate the weights.

Once you have provided the information on the Criteria tab, click on the Calculate button.

Using the information you provided on the Criteria tab, the workbook will apply the

criteria to the Data tab and then sort the locations (below row 5) in priority, based upon

how they meet your criteria (the first ones listed are those that best meet the criteria you

provided).
