CAMP GREENDALE ON INDIAN LAKE Join us for the second season of Camp Greendale on Indian Lake. This camp experience brings about tradition and best practices from both resident and day camp programming to create a high level experience for your child that will support achievement, relationship building and belonging.
Meet the Staff
Steve Lockney—Camp Director Stephan Lockney has been running day camps for the YMCA for 19 years and has worked at a Summer Camp every Summer since 1992. Stephan began his camping career at Camp Bement in Charlton and his Y camping career at YMCA Camp Harrington. In 1992 Stephan and YMCA Camp Harrington were honored by the State of Massachusetts with a Distinguished Programming award for the camps work in inclusive based camping.
Stephan believes Summer Camp offers a unique chance for children to build social emotional skills that help them mature into thriving young adults. A testament to his belief was that 95% of the staff that worked for him at YMCA Camp Harrington were at one time a camper. The skills the children learned during their early childhood years as a camper helped propel over 500 of them into the camp work world at young adults.
Stephan is passionate about camping and serves as a Key Note Speaker and Conference Presenter for the American Camping Association. Stephan leads by example and strives to create a positive environment at camp where children feel safe to engage in play with peers, try new experiences, and most important enjoy being a child! He looks forward to the Summer of 2015 and all the new experiences he and the campers at Camp Greendale on Indian Lake are about to embark on.
Peter Kolifrath—Tennis Director Pete joined the Y in November of 2008.
He is a graduate of Merrimack College and is
certified by the USPTA and PTR. In his 25
years of teaching and coaching tennis Pete
has been recognized as USPTA “Pro of the
Year”, has coached many top juniors, coached
many adult teams to league or national championships, and has
volunteered in the community introducing tennis to many schools
and youth organizations. Pete has also used his tennis background
to give back to the community by raising thousands of dollars for
local and national charities.
Pete is a life-long resident of Massachusetts and currently lives in
Merrimac, MA with his wife, Donna, and two daughters, Jenni and
Jessi.
Interests & Hobbies: Aside from tennis Pete is an avid guitar player
who can never find enough time to play. In addition he enjoys
traveling and spending lots of time with his wife and kids.
Best thing about working at the Y: “Being able to do what I love
(tennis) to help those in our community.”

RAINY DAY PROGRAMMING
WHAT DO YOU DO DURING RAINY DAYS AT CAMP?
Camp Greendale on Indian Lake has two types of rainy day programming. If there is no
Thunder or Lightning and the rain is a drizzle activities will go on as scheduled. Some
adjustments might be made in our schedule, but for the most part, we would encourage
campers to dress for the weather and enjoy some alternate programming such as puddle
jumping or mud-ball.
If it is Thundering or Lightning, safety dictates that we keep all campers indoors. During this time, our rainy day activities are
enacted. We have a variety of crafts and indoor games that we will bring out specifically for these types of days. While we
hope these days are few and far between, we are fully prepared with gak-making supplies, bingo prizes, and rec room games
to keep campers happy and occupied while the weather passes.
SPECIALTY PROGRAMMING SAMPLES
Performing Arts Special
Providing Children the opportunities to explore performing arts is
something unique to our Summer Experience. Performing arts have been
linked to increases in children’s creativity, self esteem, focus, collaboration
skills, and dedication to a task. Children will be given the opportunity to
experience dance, dramatic play, acting, performance art, and a variety of
other arts during their time in this special.
Aquatics Special
Indoor and Outdoor Aquatics programming will make our camp
program unique to Massachusetts in 2015. Children will be
given the opportunity to ADD-ON swim lessons in our
therapeutic Alden Pool on Tuesday/Thursday ($15/week), they
will be given the choice to have recreational swim each
afternoon in the Main Pool, and they will have a chance to boat
on Indian Lake in canoes and individual Kayaks.
Tennis Special
Does your child have an interest in Tennis or is it something they never
had the opportunity to get involved with? Well our Tennis Specialty area
gives your child the chance to learn the basics of Tennis or continue
their own development if they already have experience. Utilizing the
only indoor clay courts in Central Massachusetts children will be given
the chance to experience Tennis in a place like no other around.
SPECIALTY PROGRAMMING SAMPLES
Outdoor Education Special When children engage in adventure education specialty activities they learn about interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships and build valuable life experiences (cooperation, leadership, positive risk-taking, and trust). Using a Challenge by Choice philosophy children will be given opportunities to challenge themselves to grow and challenge themselves to learn the skills necessary to work as a team with their peers.
Sports and Recreation Special
Children have a great need for physical exercise and activity and
a chance to use their muscles to run, swing, kick, shoot, jump,
skate and/or ride a bike. By playing group games (tag,
parachute, biking, playground time, etc.) and non-competitive
sports (soccer, kickball, basketball, hockey, etc.) we will allow
them to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and
coordination, and gain self-confidence.
Visual Arts Special Our young artist specialty area provides a strong grounding in the visual arts and encourages creative and personal growth through self-expression to all children that attend camp. A Diverse Curriculum encompassing several mediums (painting, drawing, sculpting, textile, collage, lego, etc.) and a self-expressive environment allows campers to build self-confidence along with a foundation of creative and technical skills in the visual arts.
Field Trips
Each week the older campers in camp have an optional field trip
that they can choose to attend. Field trip locations in the past
have been Canobie Lake Park, Breezy Waterslides, Legoland Boston,
and the Franklin Park Zoo. Field trips are not covered with camp
tuition and cost $15-30.00 per trip
STEM Special (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
Our STEM specialty area provides children with a hands on
approach to exciting education opportunities in the Summer. An
experiential curriculum will allow children to experience science/
math in fun and creative ways. Children will build with Legos,
create natural bird feeders to allow for bird watching, and use
math to determine measurements needed to create their own
bubble solutions are just some of the exciting activities planned
for 2017.

LEADERSHIP
LEADER PROGRAM (12*-14 YEAR OLDS)
*MUST BE 13 BY 12/31/17
Leadership Development and Leader in Training Program
Our Leader program helps prepare 13-14 year olds for the challenges
of leadership. This program is designed for the Middle School student
who is interested in working on working on their leadership skills as
well as may like to work as a summer camp counselor in the future. The
program works on the teen’s leadership attributes through service
learning, adventure programming and first aid. Leaders will enhance
their skills and knowledge in the way of planning events for younger
campers. 13 year olds are Leaders in Training and work hand in hand
with head counselors each day with recreation in the afternoon. 14 year
olds are LDPs and are given the chance to decide if they want to help a
Head Counselor or support and learn from a Specialist. Leader Sessions
are 1 week. Each interested candidate must fill out an Leader
application and participate in an interview prior to camp. Application
Deadline is June 1st (pending space availability)
JUNIOR COUNSELOR PROGRAM (14-16 YEAR OLDS)
*MUST BE 15 BY 12/31/17
Junior Counselor Program
The Junior Counselor program is the next step after our Leader Program
for teens 14 to 16 years old.. Our Junior Counselor program helps
advance our 14-16 year olds for the challenges of leadership involved
with working with children at a Summer Day Camp. The program builds
upon the Leader curriculum and is directly designed to help provide
young adults with a positive first work experience. The program works
on the teens leadership attributes through service learning programs,
adventure programming, and first aid/safety skills. JCs will enhance
their skills and knowledge by planning events of the younger campers
while being teamed up with multiple counselors throughout their time at
camp to learn proper behaviors and techniques to summer camp
childcare. Each interested candidate must fill out a YMCA Volunteer
Application and meet with the Camp Director with a parent or guardian
for a 1 hour intake interview to determine if the candidate and family
are truly interested in the program.
