MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome and thank you for your interest in Camp Westwood! Here at Camp Westwood we focus on giving our families and campers the best experience possible on our beautiful 85 acres. Our focus is on youth development, allowing campers to discover skills, build relationships and develop a sense of belonging. This is done through being encouraged to try new things, make new friendships and feeling welcomed into our camp family!

At the core of our days we focus on the YMCA’s values of Caring (red), Honesty (blue), Respect (yellow) and Responsibility (green). It is our belief, after a week or a whole summer with us, you will notice these values developing in your child. My hope is that you and your family can find a connection to camp that all of our staff and past campers feel. We would love to meet with you, show you our facility and answer any questions you may have! Hope to see you at Camp Westwood soon!

Here’s to the Best Summer Yet!

Traditional Camps

YOUTH ENTERING GRADES K - 2

CAMP RAINBOWExperience the outdoors and the wonders of nature with the first of our progressive camp offerings - Camp Rainbow! Camps are arranged in groups by their grade. Campers will be encouraged to practice healthy lifestyles and participate in activities geared toward their social, emotional and physical development. These young campers follow a daily schedule of events which include group games, arts and crafts, swim lessons, recreational swim and playground use. These activities are carried out under the watchful eyes of counselors trained to meet the needs of our young campers.

YOUTH ENTERING GRADES 3 - 5

CAMP EXPLORATIONThis program is day camping in the traditional sense. It is the next phase of our progressive camp offerings. Campers are assigned to different groups according to their grade and will participate in age appropriate activities. They will learn new skills such as boating and continue to develop their swimming techniques through daily swim lessons. Our typical schedule includes a variety of activities that focus on character development, teamwork and good sportsmanship. Campers have the opportunity to make new friends and develop social awareness.

YOUTH ENTERING GRADES 6 - 8

CAMP ADVENTURECamp Adventure is comprised of our older campers, it allows for further development of skills introduced in Camp Exploration. Swimming remains an integral part of the daily schedule. Campers in this group are given more opportunity to plan certain activities to develop leadership and creativity. All activities are geared toward building good character and responsible teens. We strive to instill four main character traits: caring, honesty, responsibility and respect.

Why Day Camp? Why Westwood?

Being outside makes you healthier!!!!!!!!!!!! Get back to nature.

There is more and more literature about the positive effects of getting kids outside and active. From general health and wellbeing to specific health and vision benefits to excellent opportunities for socialization - it is important to get kids back in nature and help limit screen time. That is our goal here at YMCA Camp Westwood!

80%

Of kids ages 8 to 12 say contact with nature

makes them more creative, happy, healthy,

and smart

zzz

Spending time in green space improves

your sleep

90%

Of vitamin D can be obtained from casual exposure to sunlight

Combat nearsightedness by being outside in natural light and away from close

work and screen time

5-15

Minutes in nature helps lower blood pressure,

heart rate, and cortisol pressure (which is your

stress hormone)

20%

Improved memory after walking through nature1

1 2008 study at the Univ. of Michigan gave study participants a rigorous memory test before taking them for a walk. One part of the group then walked down a busy street and one part walked through an arboretum. The test was readministered and the group that walked through the arboretum scored nearly 20% higher.

A YMCA Without WallsThe Westwood YMCA in Coventry is what we call a YMCA without walls. We are not a traditional YMCA that has a gym, fitness center, swimming pool etc. Instead what we offer is a beautiful three season outdoor facility and year-round programming at local schools. Because we do not have a full facility your membership fee is also reduced, in comparison to a full facility Y.

The beginning of this summer brochure outlines all our programs regarding our summer day camp and our summer specialty camps. The next part of the brochure outlines programs that we offer in addition to day camp. This includes;

• Sports Programs. Tennis, soccer, basketball, and more!

• Swim Programs. A complete swim lesson program for all ages and abilities based on the national YMCA Progressive Swim Program. We also offer competitive swim training in our lake.

• Special Events. Fishing tournaments, movies (indoor and outdoor), kids triathlon, water games, and more!

• Childcare Programs. Fall childcare and enrichment programs at Western Elementary, Washington Oaks, and Metcalf schools. The enrichment programs are open to everyone, not just our members!

• Cabin and campground rentals. We have a variety of cabins from primitive to our Executive cabin on the water’s edge. We rent sites in our campground for campers up to 39 feet and also tenting.

PLEASE NOTE: one dog allowed per campsite (must be on leash) and NO dogs allowed in cabins.

• Facility Rentals for Special Events. This is done “a la carte”. You can rent the lodge on the waterfront for a wedding, shower, reunion, birthday party, or other functions. You can also rent specific areas of our facility like the ball field, hardcourt area, a portion of the waterfront, etc.

All these amenities are available to the public and to our members at a discount. Join NOW!!
