This time he is accompanied by the Ensemble Symphony Orchestra conduc- ted by Sarah Hicks. Performing a selection of his biggest hits, both as a solo artist and as a member of Police, the goal of this project is to "rein- vent" Sting's songs with what he calls "a whole new palate of musical colours". Sting himself has adapted the arrangements of songs from his long and diverse musical career and journey, and the evening foresees such “classics” as “Message In A Bottle”, “Every Little Thing She Does”, “Roxanne”, “Every Breath You Take” as well as “Englishman in New York” and “Desert Rose”. The result is described as an intriguing combination of rock and classical, often adding emotional power to well-known tracks. Aida is perhaps the opera that best represents Rome’s unique operaseason in the scenic setting provided by Caracalla Baths. The ample

stage, the monumental ruins and also the open-air setting have alwaysgiven stage directors the opportunity to rise to the challenge of stagingbreathtaking productions with hundreds of extras, opulent costumes, and sometimes even live elephants on stage. Written by Verdi in 1841and first performed in Cairo, the story deals with the conflict betweenlove and patriotism. Aida marks the transition between Verdi’s middleand late periods, it is notable for its orchestral and harmonic richness, for its magnificent choral scenes and for Verdi’s psychological penetra-tion in his depiction of the jealous Amneris. The Opera Theatre presentsa new staging of the work with the Orchestra and Choir of the Teatrodell’Opera conducted by Asher Fisch and directed by the theatre’s newballet director Micha van Hoecke. Amongst the protagonists are Hui He,Giovanna Casolla, Walter Fraccaro, Alberto Mastromarino, Rafal Siwek,Nicoletta Curiel. Performances from 2nd to 9th August at Terme di Cara-calla, Via delle Terme di Caracalla. For tickets and information tel.06481601, www.operaroma.it

The original Buena Vista Social Club was a Havana music club of the 1940s. 50 years later, US guitaristRy Cooder recorded veteran Cuban musicians and borrowed the club’s name. An album and movie

followed and a legend was created. Members of the band featured in Wim Wender’s block buster filmare on tour and stop off in Rome with star vocalist, 80-year-old Cuban singer (and original band mem-

ber) Omara Portuondo, for an evening composed ofCuban classics. Stylistically, the collective spans theentire spectrum of Afro-Cuban music with slow bole-ro ballads and beautiful melodies while backgroundvocals convey messages of romance. On stage forwhat has come to be known as Rome’s “gran nochecubana”, a couple of the original surviving memberssuch as Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal on trumpet, andlaud virtuoso Barbarito Torres are joined by singersIdania Valdés and Carlos Calunga and brilliant virtuo-so pianist Rolando Luna typifying the new genera-tion.
