Beth Hillel is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue rooted in the ancient traditions of the Torah while growing to meet the changes and challenges of our world. Its core are the many people of different ages and backgrounds who have chosen to make it their spiritual home, joining together for prayer, learning, and celebration. The many branches of Beth Hillel’s community provide support to its congregants, reaching out to each other and welcoming our neighbors as together we learn from the past and teach for the future.

From Rabbi Atkins’ Desk Everything is connected…… Sometimes events that happened much earlier in one’s life come back and

present themselves again. In one way, it’s eerie; in another I guess it has to be expected. Let me share two such situations…. When I was a chaplain in the Air Force, immediately after my ordination in 1974, I was sent, as most of you know, to the Philippines. I was told I would also be “circuit-riding,” providing Jewish chaplain coverage to bases in Taiwan as well as elsewhere in the Philippines. When I arrived out there, I was told that I would also be traveling to several bases in Thailand, as the Jewish chaplain stationed there had recently been killed in an automobile accident and there were no other Jewish chaplains to replace him. This meant a lot more time away from family as well a lot of unique experiences… and in several ways resulted in choices that changed the path of my life. All I knew about the rabbi who had died was that he was a reform rabbi named David Sobel, z”l. Fast forward 35 years. As an active member of the local Jewish War Veterans post, I read of a long-overdue program to set up a monument to the memory of Jewish chaplains who died on active duty at Arlington National Cemetery. Rabbi Sobel was the last name on the list. I mentioned to someone the connection between the two of us, and was told – “did you know he was from

West Hartford?” No, I didn’t! I discovered that he had been best friends with Rabbi Jim Ponet, the Jewish chaplain at Yale. So I called and met him, and he has told me some very special stories about his friend…. And when that monument is finally dedicated, I’d like to be there (or at least see it) and give a salute to this young rabbi whose life ended so tragically. And, to really pull together, when I visited Rabbi Ponet at the Slifka Center at Yale, I saw a copy of a student publication named “Hamevasayr,” (The bearer of good tidings) which was the name I gave to my congregational bulletin when I was out in the Philippines! A second story…. I have been a mohel for thirty years. I was fortunate to learn Milah in 1981, and especially teaching it has been a favorite mitzvah of mine. In 1989 the Rabbinical Assembly and the Jewish Theological Seminary joined together to create a program to train physicians to be mohelim, which they called “Brit Kodesh.” (Holy Covenant) I helped to train this first group of students and was given a certificate as well. (The then president of the Rabbinical Assembly, Albert Lewis, who was remembered in Mitch Alboum’s wonderful book Have A Little Faith (that I talked about last Rosh Hashanah), welcomed the students, and his signature is on my certificate.) There were subsequent classes in 1995 and 2003, which I also helped to teach. One of the students in 2003 was a Dr. Len Sharzer, who went on to study and be ordained at the seminary. He was a natural choice to continue the program

and has organized another session of the course, which took place the first week in May. He was kind enough to ask me to assist in the 2011 course, 22 years after the first, and so one of my students has asked me to continue this teaching chain….. It was a pleasure to do so in early May! Little did I know where this would lead when I first became a mohel thirty years ago! Actually the first bris I ever did was (with the aid of a congregant physician), was for my son Moshe when he was born in 1979. Those of you who have seen his photo know that he is now taller than me! I will tell you that he doesn’t hold my bringing him into the covenant against me, and, as you may remember, presented Iris and myself with a beautiful granddaughter, Jasmine, now a year old, as the cycle of generations continues…. and I just saw Jasmine a few months ago at the RA convention in Las Vegas. So our earlier deeds and activities come back to touch our later lives, and I am sure each of you has similar stories. Enjoy summer and the many special events and services here at Beth Hillel Synagogue, your synagogue!

May was another busy month at Beth Hillel Synagogue. On Friday May 6th, we invited area wide unaffiliated Jewish families and singles to join us for Shabbat services and find out all about BHS. On Sunday evening May 15th, we had our major fundraiser, “Comedy Night – Shaun Eli and friends”. The May 20 – 21st weekend, we had our scholar-in-residence. She spoke about Judaism in India. A relevant subject in these times, given the not so long ago was the bombing of a hotel and killing of several Jews. Thursday evening, May 26th was our Annual Congregational meeting. The Board of Directors and I presented next year’s budget, a revised Constitution and a slate of officers for you to approve. The result of the meeting was not known when the bulletin was published. This year’s budget will show a significant financial deficit. The Board of Directors unfortunately cannot control certain synagogue operating expenses. We will tap into our savings and accept the generous offer made by the Kestens. We need you to help us get new members. As Membership Committee chairs, David Nemirow and Norman Cohen want your support. Help them identify new members. In January the congregation decided to stay put. With that vote, you pledged to work harder to get new membership and make BHS a more viable place.

Join Our Havurah

According to Wikipedia a Havurah is a small group of like-minded Jews who meet for the purpose of sharing communal experiences, such as life-cycle events and Jew-ish learning. A few years ago, Toby and I were members of a Beth Hillel Bible study group. It was a positive ex-perience for us so now I am inter-ested in forming a Havurah or two for Beth Hillel members who will meet at different host homes on a 4-6 week cycle. Each group will decide on a particular study for-mat. Some possible ideas can be a book discussion and review, Bible study, Israeli affairs, the prophets, Jewish cooking, Shab-bat dinners, etc. Are you interested? If so, call me at home 860-242-7084, or leave me a message at the office. Joel Neuwirth

Havurah

We apologize that there was no May bulletin issued due to unforeseen circumstances. We are again without a bulle-tin editor. One congregant graciously volunteered to put together this bulletin only but can not do another. If you know of any one who can either take on the bulletin themselves or will help assist the office, please let the office know. The donations listed on pages 11-12 are for both May and June. The next bulletin will be the Mid - Summer bulletin which should be issued around July 20th.

Chai Mitzvah Havdalah

It's hard to believe that it's been almost a full year since we began our second year of Chai Mitzvah. Our participants have been very busy with their learning and now are ready to shine! Please join us all for a special Havdalah service where we will celebrate together a year of learn-ing. Please notice that this is NOT an "end of year" celebration; this is a cele-bration to mark a year of learning that I'm sure will continue! You will have an op-portunity to meet our participants and learn from them what brought them to Chai Mitzvah, what they accomplished during this year of learning and what they will do in the future. We look forward to seeing you at this very special service! Tammi Kraushaar Chai Mitzvah Mentor

On April 8th and 9th Beth Hillel Synagogue had the good fortune to host a weekend with two members of The Israel Defense Forces. With the help of the Westchester/ Connecticut chapter of Friends of the I.D.F. we were able to meet these delightful young defenders of Israel. We had a great turnout for

Friday evening services and for Shabbat morning. They spoke about their experience serving our homeland, why they decided to serve for several years beyond the normal enlistment period and de-scribed their duties as members of the I.D.F. As a result of this meeting, and the feeling of wanting to help these de-voted young men and women the Israel Affairs Committee has de-cided to join forces with Friends of the I.D.F. and help in any way we can. One of the programs available is called THE LONE SOLDIER pro-gram which provides funds for any member, who have no immedi-ate family in Israel, to be able to visit family in their country of origin

for holidays and when on leave. If any member of Beth Hillel is in-terested in helping to support this project of the committee, donations may be made to Friends of the I.D.F., sent to the synagogue office to the attention of Leon Carr who will see to it that all contributions are utilized for this purpose.
