CHRISTMAS LIGHT SHOW --Come see a beautiful holiday display and support AVFR! This season Franktronics, located at the corner of Rt. 17 and Linda Circle in Ordinary, VA, is again having a Christmas Light Show every evening. The light show now has over a dozen songs playing that are synchronized to over 100,000 lights. The charity this year is the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue squad. A donation box is located on the front corner of the building directly over the fire hydrant light display. Please park in the Salvation Army parking lot, backed up to the sidewalk. Please turn off your headlights. Franktronics ownership and various employees have multigenerational ties to BUMC, AVFR and GVFRS.

Something special’s coming up (in addition to Christmas)! Josiah Minor will be acting in a seasonal play at the Gloucester Moose Lodge. Performances are today (Sunday, Dec. 13) at 3:00 and 7:00 PM, and tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. We hope to have multiple church friends attend the 3 PM showing today after church. We’ll meet at the Lodge (near Lowe’s). Carter Roane, a BUMC member, is also part of the play. Let’s show our support!
BEETHOVEN’S FAITH

Baptized on 17 December 1770 (born probably a day or two earlier), Ludwig van
Beethoven battled and surmounted superhuman adversity all of his fifty-seven years
on earth to become one of the greatest musicians in history. How fitting that we
celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth in the midst of a global pandemic, which
he would no doubt vanquish with a triumphant symphonic salve!
Towards the end of his life, Beethoven copied the following passage from
Christian Sturm’s Betrachtungen (Meditations):
“To the praise of Thy goodness I must confess that Thou hast tried all means to
draw me to Thee. Now it hath pleased Thee to let me feel the heavy hand of Thy
wrath, and to humiliate my proud heart by manifold chastisements. Sickness and
misfortune has Thou sent me to bring me to a contemplation of my digressions.
But one thing only do I ask, O God, cease not to labor for my improvement. Only
let me, in whatsoever manner pleases Thee, turn to Thee and be fruitful of good
workers.”
Among the “good works” of his final years are two which most eloquently attest
Beethoven’s deep abiding faith. The Missa Solemnis (Solemn Mass) in D Major, Opus
123, is a monumental setting of the texts of the Catholic Mass for four vocal soloists,
chorus, and orchestra. Like the equally titanic Mass in B Minor by Johann Sebastian
Bach, it vastly expands the traditional dimensions of liturgical ceremony. In
composing this work Beethoven wrote that his deepest concern and chief intention
had been “to arouse and establish permanent religious feeling in both the singers and
the audience.”
No such public declaration accompanied the String Quartet No. 15 in A Minor,
Opus 132, completed after Beethoven’s recovery from a near-fatal illness in 1825.
Conceived for performance in a small concert hall or drawing room, not a grand
cathedral, the work nevertheless leaves an indelible impression on the listener’s
soul with its central movement subtitled Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an
die Gottheit (Holy Song of Thanks from a Convalescent to the Deity). Built upon the
ninth-century Latin hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus (Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls
Inspire—see UMH No. 651), the movement alternates between slow, sustained
musical prayers and quicker, dancelike sections saluting the recovery of physical
health. In his closing pages Beethoven asks the quartet to play Mit innigster
Empfindung (With deepest feeling), as the sound soars heavenward in a sublime
peroration rarely attained by the art of music before or since Opus 132!
In the notes for his recording of the Missa Solemnis, conductor Eugen Jochum
writes: “In this most pure, virile music all that stirs the heart of a human being is
turned to speech: suffering, grief, loneliness, but also, and above all, the
indescribable sweetness of consolation, happiness, dance, ecstasy carried to the
bounds of mystical transport…The entire span of the human heart and spirit is in
that work, perceptible, communicable.”
When the George Nelson Memorial Concert Series resumes at Bethany in the
Fall of 2021, we hope to present a Beethoven tribute concert that will include the
Holy Song of Thanks in a transcription for piano-organ duet as well as the Piano
Sonata No. 17 in D Minor, with recitation of passages from Shakespeare’s The
Tempest which inspired it, together with music by Franz Schubert whom Beethoven
inspired. His faith, and our faith in God who speaks to us in music, will carry us
