THE VISITOR BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH
ANOTHER GREAT EXAMPLE OF TEAMWORK AT BETHEL!
JULY 2015 VOLUME 15, ISSUE 7
Friends of Bethel, I want to thank so many of you who played a role in the teamwork that transformed our Fellowship Hall in our Downtown Campus! The Women of Bethel had the original idea and got the ball rolling! . . . After noticing the old carpeting in the Fellowship Hall was ripped, stained, and was rippling, they volunteered to replace it using funds from the Scandinavian Food Fest . . . (Ladies, thank you for your gen-erosity, and your willingness to pick colors and patterns!) Then Bethel’s Property Com-mittee stepped in to reason, “If we are updating the floor, how about the walls and the ceiling?” So our Property Committee spearheaded the effort to 1/ paint and fix the walls of Fel-lowship Hall, the hallway, and other rooms in the basement, 2/ replace ceiling tiles, and 3/ up-date and add to the lighting pan-els in the ceiling. As their appeal went out so many of you (of all ages!) stepped forward to help with painting, patching, install-ing new ceiling panels, and hanging new lighting. (Thanks
also to our Business Adminis-trator, Ralph Van Keulen for his tireless efforts to: coordi-nate the volunteers, serve as project manager, and to handle all the interruptions and obsta-cles!) Yes, we did run into a snag that delayed our timetable . . . As the old carpeting was being removed, the tiles beneath it also came up. After testing, it was determined the old tiles and the glue used, contained asbestos. Thus, the asbestos had to be professionally re-moved, at a cost that wasn’t a part of our budget. However, the project continued on and now our basement has a look we can be proud of, it is more functional (with the added lighting), and it should serve us well for many years to come! Again friends, this is another example of the great things we can do, and the goals we can accomplish, when we work to-gether. (“Many hands make light work!”) There are too many of you to

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE
If you have an interest in Native American culture, American history, the Old West or mission trips,
you’ll want to join us for our Fall trip to the Pine Ridge In-dian Reservation in southwest-ern South Dakota. We’ll be de-livering school supplies and clothing, seeing the sites, hear-ing from a number of Lakota friends, and doing a small ser-vice project. (And above all things, showing the love of Christ through our actions!) The dates are Thursday-Sunday, October 22-25 and the cost is $200 to cover transportation, lodging and food. (We can only take a maxi-mum of 18 people.) Talk to Pas-tor John, Alan Park or Mary Gerzmehle if you’re interested. (This has been a life-changing trip for so many for the past couple of years!)
WE’VE ALMOST
REACHED OUR GOAL!
Thanks to your efforts, Bethel has reached $101,000 in Family Fresh receipts. Only $49,000 more to go, then Bethel youth will receive $1,000! Receipts can be dropped off at either welcome center. THANK YOU!

Currently we don't have any-one selling at Highlands. If you would like to volunteer to sell the Equal Exchange Fair Trade Goods at Highlands on the first Sunday of the month between the 9:30 and 11 am services, please call the church office (715.386.8821).

JULY 2015 JULY 2015
PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRY! Bethel is pleased to announce the hiring of Rev. Jean Elliott as the Director of Youth Ministry. Jean has three “Es”: Education, Experience, and Enthusiasm. She is currently serving as the LifeStage Minister for Children and their Families at the Rose-mount United Methodist Church in Rosemount, Minnesota. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Anthropology/ Sociology from St. Olaf College, and a Master of Arts in Christian Education with a focus on Youth Faith Formation from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. She began her youth ministry work in 1999, and has been serving faithfully ever since. She has ample experience lead-ing mission trips, retreats, and ongoing high school, middle school, and confirmation ministries. Jean has a passionate calling to youth and family ministry. When asked if she sees herself in this position ten years from now, she answered without hesitation, “Yes, please!”
In January 2015, Bethel’s church council approved the process to hire a Director of Youth Ministry. A task force comprised of Natalie Haefner (chair), Bobbe Henderson (personnel committee representative), Cindy Smith (youth ministry committee representative), George Halunen (student representative), and Pastor Ben Hilding (staff repre-sentative) researched various ministry models and staff compositions of comparable churches. After evaluating the particular needs of Bethel, they determined that this position would focus on senior high and confirmation minis-tries. Jean will partner with Pastor Ben to strengthen these particular ministries for a sustainable future. We believe Jean is the answer to our prayers. Jean is an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church. In 2009, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) began a Full-Communion partnership with the United Methodist Church. This recognizes a common con-fession of the Christian faith, allows for joint worship, and the exchangeability of ordained ministers. Jean will be present for conversation and refreshments following each of the four worship services on the weekend of July 11th-12th. Help us welcome her to the Bethel team! Jean’s email address will be [email protected], and her church phone number, 715.386.8821, ext. 34. Her of-fice will be at the Downtown campus, in the youth ministry office wing. Jean will begin her work on July 1st, 2015.

2 SPECIAL WOW (Wednesday Outdoor Worship) SERVICES
THAT ARE BACK THIS AUGUST! *All WOW services are held at 6:30 pm at the Highlands Campus.*
BLESSING OF THE PETS WILL BE ON AUGUST 12TH! Because of the great experience last year, we will have our sec-ond annual Blessing of the Pets Service at WOW on Wednes-day, August 12th! Last year we had animals as small as hamsters and as big as a horse! Pets must be on a leash or in a cage. This is the one WOW service that is weather permitting.
BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS WILL BE
ON AUGUST 19TH! On Wednesday, August 19th, we will have our annual Blessing of the Backpacks Service at WOW. People of all ages are welcome to come and experience this blessing service. Bring your backpack and leave ready to start the year out on the right foot!

PRAYERS FOR THE
PETERMEIER FAMILY
THANKS TO ALL INVOLVED WITH UGANDAN CHOIR
Thank you very much to all in-volved in welcom-ing and hosting the Ugandan Kids Choir to Bethel the week of June 15th! From the minute they stepped off the tour bus, we shared smiles with the chil-dren and felt their love as they shared a glimpse of their lives and music with us. Special thanks to the host families: Jeremy & Laurie Palm, Mary Gerzmehle, Mary & Gordon Kirchhoff, Deb & Leilani Vic-tor, and Chris & Kelle Ander-son for opening their homes and hearts to these kids and adult chaperones. Thanks to Dr. Lois Duerst for supplying dental products for the tour group. Also a big thank-you to those who volunteered their time to help with the potluck supper and WOW service on June 17th. There were 224 men, women and children at the ser-vice! An offering of $1,053.75 was collected and 10 children were sponsored! What a privi-
lege it was to witness God's work in the lives of so many people! Shukrani nyingi (many thanks)!
Our members, Brian and
Amy Petermeier (and
daughters Kylie and Layne)
lost their home to a house
fire on Thursday, June 18th.
In the face of this devastat-
ing loss Amy and Brian say
they have been touched
and humbled by the tre-
mendous outpouring of
love, care and support they
have received from the
community. They want to
say THANK YOU to so many
of you and want you to
know how appreciative
they are!
Please keep them in your
thoughts and prayers at this
time, and if you’d like to
help, friends have set up a
fund for them that you can
find on our FACEBOOK
page, or you can make a
gift through/to Bethel
Lutheran Church and
designate it PETERMEIER/
FIRE RELIEF. Thanks for any
and all of your help and
cooperation! Pastor John
