Cell phone users across thecountry are receiving suspicioustext messages that claim to befrom Walmart. The text messagetells consumers they won a freegift card... and all they have to dois click a link and enter their in-formation to receive the prize.Unfortunately, there is no giftcard. It’s a scam to steal yourcredit card number and otherpersonal information.
This scam has several ver-sions. In one, the text reads “Youjust won a free $1000 WalmartGift Card, enter “1000” at LINK.”In another, it says: “Walmart$1000 Gift Card for the first 1000
users to go to LINK and entercode 2938.”
The texts also use differentURLs, including:
• promocenterdaily.com/wal-mart_gift
• promocenter.ws/walmart • walmartgift.mobi“The text message is a twist
on the classic email phishingscam, where scammers pose as alegitimate organization and sendout emails containing links toscam sites. Phishing scams usingSMS technology are known as‘smishing’, Jim Hegarty said, president and CEO of the BetterBusiness Bureau.
When you receive a spam textmessage on your phone, forwardthe text to the shortcode 7726(which spells “SPAM”). You’llthen receive an automated mes-sage from your wireless carrier, asking you then to enter the
phone number from which thespam text was sent.
