Manufacturing Excellence Maturity
• A Fundamental Capability Required for Operational Excellence is
– A solid data/information foundation
• ... Combining current and historical data from multiple disparate sources, ...
• ... Transforming that data into meaningful information, ...
• ... Accessing and displaying it in a clear and simple context, ...
• ... Facilitating automated workflows and enforcing Best Practices
7 Better Information Management with Historian (HUG2012)
Data Historian Scope
• A Data Historian Bridges Two Worlds ...
• The world of Process Control
– Plant-wide scope; Robust Data Collection from variety of data sources
– Real-time data, short-term history
– Process Engineers looking for detailed trending
– Process Control Network (Level 3 LAN)
– Industry standards: OPC DA, A&E, HDA
• The World of Information Systems
– Site-wide scope
– Aggregated values, long-term history, multi-year archiving
– Trending tools, reporting tools, open data access
– Industry standards: OLE DB, Active X, XML, OPC HDA
– Business applications

Value of a Data Historian (‘Why?’)
• Business Value of a Historian includes ...
– Turning data into actionable information
• Reporting and dashboarding (KPIs) - Plant, Site, and Enterprise!
• Overcome analysis paralysis
– Empowering people to make the right decisions at the right time
• Make efficient use of human resources / experts
– Identifying problems before they occur
• Reduce costs and waste, reduce incidents, avoid incompliances
– Spotting opportunities for improvements
• Increase profitability and quality, increase flexibility and agility
– Promote sharing and collaboration
• Knowledge retention, Best Practices, …
Industry and Honeywell figures suggest that historians and
related apps can reduce process incidents by 40%, halve
off-spec material, improve throughput by 2 to 8%, and cut
energy use by between 5 and 10%.
Similar improvements are found in plant availability (up 3-
8%), maintenance costs (down 3-5%) and customer
service levels (up 5-15%).
Improvements in compliance and continuous improvement
programs are harder to quantify, but no less real.

11 Better Information Management with Historian (HUG2012)
Functions of Data Historian (‘What?’)
• Functions of the Historian Include ...
– Data sink for all real-time process data
– Long-term data repository
• Several years, many thousands of tags
– Data source and sink for applications (‘MES’)
• ‘One version of the truth’; One place to turn to
– ‘Glue’ between applications (‘icebergs of data’)
– Quality tracking and tagging of data
– Unit of Measurement conversions
– Performing Calculations
• Both formal calculations and ad-hoc calculations
– Data analysis
• Turning ‘data’ into ‘information’ (‘intelligence’)
– Visualisation of data (information)
• Trends, charts, flowsheets, graphics, ...

– ‘Easy to use’
• Initial configuration, as well as life-cycle support and maintenance
• Attractive UI to facilitate data retrieval, dashboarding, and analysis
• Single sign-on, integration in Microsoft infrastructure
– Open access
• Supports standards and has supported, public APIs
– Safe & secure
• Controlled access with fine-grain controls (user level, tag level)
• Tamper-proof; Traceability
– Reliable & robust
• ‘Peer-to-Peer’, ‘Shadow’, and Clustering (High-Availability) configurations
– Scalable
• In terms of Users and in terms of Tags
– Virtualisation
• Improves IT foot print, scalability, flexibility, hardware independency, lifecycle cost, ...
